EP002: Einstein Bagels Ruined (and saved) Me
25 Jan 2019 · 18 min
Hannah Keeley shares how she went from bankruptcy and near-starvation (saved by a pastor's bag of Einstein bagels) to running a seven-figure business. She explains why standard self-help fails mothers: motherhood physically changes brain structure. Her Mom Mastery Method focuses on shifting identity and belief rather than habits.

Have you ever tried and tried, and no matter how hard you worked, how hard you hustled, you kept on going right back to where you were before you even got started. Drives me crazy. I'm going to tell you why that happens for moms. And I'm also going to share about the bagels that ruined me as well as saved me in today's podcast episode. Here's the big question. How are these average, everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick? We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley and I'm going to spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show. Hey, mom. I am so excited you're back for episode two I of that mom show. I'm Hannah Keeley, and if you listen to the first episode I told you about that woman, the Chuck E. Cheese mom who dramatically, dramatically impacted my life. I also told you that I would share about how my transformation happened. How I went from snot nose, crying, wailing and weeping in a laundry pile to. To basically running a seven figure business, having a global ministry, raising seven kids. I just. It's crazy. It makes no sense. It's God. Like, it's all God, I'm telling you. But it would be great if I was like, you know, I mean, I was like, I broke down in my laundry pile and then I had this great revelation and six months later I was having a clean home and I got down to my goal weight and I was making seven figures. And I'm also happy and like, I'm pooping out rainbows and throwing glitter in the air and that would be awesome. But that's not how it happened. And I'm going to tell you what really happened to cause such a life transformation. And it has something to do with bagels. Okay. Because I want you to know, like, I don't want you to come here and you don't get anything for it. When you tune into that mom show and when we spend time together, I want your life to be changed. I want you to get some nuggets. I want you to get some action steps. Something that's going to transform your life and just push you that much closer to the abundant life that I know God wants you to live. So when I had my breakdown in the laundry pile after that, when God said, you know, get up, fold up the laundry, and I got up and I folded that laundry and and then I started working on my budget and then I started exercising. And I would love to say it was like this beautiful slope upward, you know, and all of a sudden, like, I arrived. But here's the truth of it. I would be lying if I said that, because it was up, then down, then up, then down. And I didn't understand what was going on because I would get some results. But then for some reason, I would go immediately back to how I was before. I would save up money and I would get, like, you know, 200 in my savings account, which was a lot for me back then. And then some bill would come up and it would be gone, or I would lose some weight. And then a couple weeks later, like, I would binge on ice cream or make nachos, and then I would. You know, I couldn't fit into my pants anymore. And. And this kept on going. Like, I would get make progress, and then I would go right back to how I was at the very beginning. And it got so frustrating. And it's not like it just happened for a few weeks. It happened for a couple of years. And no matter what I was doing, I was. I was absorbing everything I could. I was, like, checking out every single personal development program I could find at the Libra. I was checking out books I was pouring over websites. I was getting into every single program to save money and to declutter. And I was just became the sponge, trying to absorb everything I could about personal development and success. But every time I tried, like I said, I would just go right back and fail miserably. And I didn't understand what was happening. And then something happened that really changed the entire, entire course of our lives. My husband was fired, and I still didn't have my act together. I had a lot of knowledge, and I knew what I needed to do, but I kept on going back, and I couldn't just break out of it. You know, I was making a little bit of progress, but nothing that you would, like, write a book about. Okay. And then my world crashed around me. My husband was fired from his job, and it was actually for sharing his faith. And we thought, you know, it's just temporary. You know, we'll get right back to it. You're gonna have a job next week. It lasted for six months, and it was probably one of the hardest six months I think I've ever had. We borrowed from every single person we knew. We maxed out every credit card. Our house was foreclosed on. It got so bad, we had to declare bankruptcy. And I mean, don't worry, we paid it all back. Thank you, Jesus. But it was such a stressful time, and it was so humiliating. And I remember one night, he had been out of work for several months, and, man, I was like. I would rub two nickels together and pray for a quarter. Like, I was doing everything I could to stretch every single dollar. And it was beans and rice, beans and rice. Occasionally, we'd have eggs and maybe baked potatoes and then more beans and rice and. And a lot of. A lot of gas created during that time. Intestinal distress major. But one night, I'll never forget, I went into the kitchen to make dinner, and there was literally nothing to eat. There were some eggs in the fridge that I was going to make the kids for breakfast. There wasn't any rice. There wasn't any pasta. You know, all the cheap things that we eat to stretch a dollar. There was literally nothing to eat. And not, like, there's nothing that I wanted to eat, but there was nothing to eat. Like, there's a big difference between saying, oh, I can't find anything to eat in the house, and, like, your pantry's full. You know, there's just nothing you want. But there was literally nothing to eat. And my heart started beating faster. I was. I didn't know what to do. I was panicking. Like, my kids were hungry. I had three kids at the time. They were hungry. And I really didn't know what to do. And my husband came home, and he could tell I was upset, and I told him I was like, I don't know what to do for dinner. Like, we don't. We have no food here. And we couldn't use any of our credit cards. We already had. Our account was overdrawn. And he just. Just the look in his eyes, he was. He felt so defeated. You know, here he is. He can't even find a job, can't bring any money in. And I didn't know what to do. And at that point, I will never forget, I heard a knock at the door, and I was like, man, I am so not in the mood to deal with anyone. Like, I've got a situation here. I don't want to deal with anyone. I went to the door, open it. And it was our. Our pastor from church. And he was holding a bag of Einstein Bagels. And he said, hey, I know this may sound weird, but my daughter just got a job at Einstein Bagels, and I was visiting her, and they were closing up, and they had all these bagels there, and I was taking them home. But I just felt like the Lord just wanted me to come by here and ask if you guys wanted these bagels. And I was like, oh, how cool. Wow, thank you. That's really sweet of you. Like, totally on the outside being, like, chill, you know, and on the inside, I was basically, like. Wanted to shout hallelujah, cry, scream. I don't. I can't even explain the emotion, but I was so grateful. And I tried to put on a front, like, oh, that was sweet. Like, everything was okay, knowing full well that God had my back that night. And I'm so thankful that my pastor was willing to listen. And when he left, I don't think in my life I've ever felt so grateful and so disgusted at the same time. I don't know if that even makes sense, but I was so grateful that we had food. And I played it up like, hey, kids, we're having a. A bagel party. Yay, bagels, you know? But I felt so disgusted. Kind of like Gone with the Wind, that epic scene when Scarlett o', Hara, like, grabs the carrot or the potato or whatever she found on the ground and eats it. It's like, as God is my witness, I will never be hungry again. Like, she was so disgusted with herself. Hey, mama. We'll get right back to the podcast, but did you know there is an entire online university just for. If you're ready to get radical results in your life, just go to mommastery.com that's M O M M A S T E R-Y.com make sure you check it out and take your free quiz Again, that's mommastery.com M O M M A S T E-R-Y.com now back to the podcast. I felt that way. I was so disgusted that I had hit such a low point, even though, like, you know, a year earlier, I had still hit a low point. Like, I hadn't made progress. And the thing that was crazy, like, my background was in psychology, you know, I spent years as a behavior therapist. I should know something's going on. And I came to terms that night with the fact that whatever I was doing, although I was learning a lot, my results were not changing. And that was when I decided I had to go a little deeper. I had to figure out maybe these strategies are different than what works with me. And I started diving into doing research about moms and about how our brains operate and what's different about us. And I realized that moms, actually, they've done MRIs of women before and after they had kids, and they found that they had Prolonged differences in their brain, like, long after they have kids and they have a reduction in the gray matter that deals with social cognition. And what that means is, is our brains adapt in a different way after we have kids in order to deal with the demands that. That. The new demands that we have with children. Like, have you ever thought, like, you had this spidey sense? You know, like, you. You just knew something was wrong with your middle schooler, and so you were able to get it out of her? Or. Or you're able to, like, grab your kid right before they run out into the. In front of a car in a parking lot. Or you just know, like, you know what, she's. She's got something in her mouth. Like, you have the sense. Like, if you dig your finger in there and sure enough, she was chewing on a gum wrapper or something, you just know you have the sense. And that's how our brain develops. But the deal is that all of the programs that were created to save you money and to grow your business and to clean your homes, a lot of these programs, if not the vast majority, are created by people who are not wired that way. Their brains don't wire that way. They're able to sit in an office, they're able to work at a desk. They're able to spend more than 20 minutes at one task, whereas moms are like, we're all over the place. And so I started doing research, and I started realizing why these programs weren't working for me, and I started creating a different program, something where I was able to transform myself from the inside out. Because I realized. And everything else, I was trying to change what I was doing on the outside. I was trying to change how I managed my money. I tried to change how I ate. I tried to change how I kept house or how I managed my time or how I spoke with my kids. I tried to change everything from the outside, which all these programs were telling me to do. But then when I dug deep into God's word, and I realized that I need to change the way my mind operates. I need to change not. Not my brain, but my mindset. I need to change my identity. I need to realize that instead of trying to change my money, I need to first get that belief that I am wealthy, that God supplies all my needs according to his riches and glory in Christ Jesus. I'm already wealthy. Instead of changing what I ate, I had to believe that I was already a healthy, energetic person. Instead of changing the way I kept house and how I dealt with clutter I had to get my identity straight, that I was a clean, organized person. And when I started to do these methods to change my identity and what I believed about myself, all of a sudden everything else just happened like, and it happened so fast. And I started fine tuning this program and actually I developed it into eight steps. It's called the Mom Mastery Method and it's a trademark method that helps moms and it's what I use. That's what helped me. That's what brought me from rock bottom, you know, begging for Einstein bagels to where I am now. And I can definitely credit it back to this method that I developed for myself. But all of a sudden, like I started sharing it with other moms and they started using and getting the same results. Now, I'm telling you this because if you've made it this far into my podcast, then I want to give you this gift. If you want to try out the Mom Mastery Method, you can get a free 7 day experience of Mom Mastery University, which is based on the Mom Mastery Method. And I'm giving this to you. This is. But what I want you to understand is if you failed at programs, I want you to understand, please, please, please, you did not fail. The program failed you. It wasn't designed for you. You are distinct, you are unique, you are different. And that's a good thing. Like don't I know that. You know, you hear a lot of things, stuff, stuff about mom brain. Well, it's a real thing, but it's a good thing. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to respond to the needs that you have as a mom. So I want you to just have grace with yourself.
