23 Feb 2019 · 13 min
Hannah Keeley gives moms three ways to keep daily routines from feeling like ruts: use small rewards to reinforce tasks, do monthly reviews in a planner to track progress, and build momentum with a supportive group. The difference is a hamster wheel versus a hamster ball.

Hey, mama, do you ever feel like you're in a rut? Same old, same old. Every single day. I got you, girl. But you know what? Sometimes when we practice our routines, we can feel like they're not going anywhere. Today, I'm going to show you the three things you need to have in place to make sure your routines are not digging you into a rut. So listen up. You're going to love it.
Here's the big question. How are these average, everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick?
We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley, and I'm going to.
Spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show.
Okay? So I definitely know what it's like. I am such a big proponent of routines. By the way, I'm coming to you from a conference funnel, hacking live, sitting out here amidst, I don't know, maybe two, 3,000 people. But guess what? Everyone's talking with everyone else. Hanging out. You know what? We're hanging out. I'm over here in a corner. I'm hanging out with you. Of all these people, you know who I want to hang out with? I want to spend time with you. You're like me. We're moms. We're growing together. I love nothing more than being there to help you. So that's what I'm doing today, is I want to help you with your routines. I'm a big believer in routines. I've got my AM routines. I got my PM routines. I lay up my clothes the night before. I get up in the morning. I have my devotion. You know how it is. You're probably like that, too, if you're listening. Especially if you're inside Mom Mastery University. You are all about routines. Am I right? Routines, like, it's is your best weapon in this life. It's your toolkit to create the life that you want. But here's what happens. Sometimes we'll do our routines and we feel like they're not going anywhere. Like, okay, I get up in the morning. I do my devotion. I have my coffee, I prepare the breakfast. And now I lay out my clothes. And now I do write down my goals. And now I go to bed. It's almost like, okay, is my life like Groundhog Day? Am I, like, going through the same day over and over and over? And that's not true. It could feel like it. Here's why. Because when you start having your routines in place, you're actually putting into effect what's called the compound effect. You don't notice the difference every single day because it's so minute. You don't notice the difference, but you. It might get loud here, guys, so forgive me. You don't notice the difference, but it is creating a difference. It is getting you someplace, and that's what you need to understand. So here's what I have three ways, three, actually, three tools that I want you to start implementing to make sure your routines are actually getting you someplace and it's not just making you feel like nothing's happening. Things are happening, but they're happening slowly. But the compound effect goes into place. And a year after you've been establishing these routines, you're like, oh, my gosh, my life has changed so dramatically. But in, like, three or four days, that's not the case. You don't notice it. It's getting frustrating because you're trying to do these same things, and you don't feel. You don't have that instant reward. You don't feel like it's going anywhere. So what I want to share with you is these three things that you should have in place, because I know it's hard to stick with routines when you don't have that immediate gratification of seeing results. So, number one, rewards. You have to have a reward system set in place. This could be something so simple, y'. All. This doesn't have to be like, I'm going to, you know, give myself a weekend getaway when I lose my £40. It's not something big. In order to reward yourself for your routines, it has to be something little. Like, it has to be. Because remember, your routines are small steps. So you've got to make your rewards small rewards. So simple things. For example, maybe you make yourself like an afternoon latte or something, but you will only allow yourself to have that afternoon latte once your routines are done and they're set in place. If it was like, make sure I get all the chores done in the morning, you know, you've got that waiting for you. It could be something like, okay, every time I press play on that workout video and I get my exercise in, I'm just going to put a gold star on the calendar, something like that. The reason why it has to be small and simple is so you can execute it every day. Something I have. And I know this may sound silly and it's kind of. I feel a little embarrassed even sharing it with you because it's so insignificant, but I have some Decorative lights in my office, and they're on a tree. They're really pretty. I plug them in every morning. But what I do, and again, it's just helping to put a little reward with that routine, is I make sure my desk is all clear, my office is picked up, I've got a really nice space to work, and then I plug in the lights. So something even that simple is just enough to stimulate the reward center of your brain. So your brain is saying, okay, this is good, we'll do it again. We'll do it again tomorrow and the next day and the next day. Something simple. Because your rewards, like the difference between a rut and a routine, is have you ever seen those hamsters in a wheel, like in a cage? And they're like burning calories like crazy. They're running, running, running, running, running like they have this crazy crazed look in their eyes and they're going nowhere. They're in a hamster wheel. They're going nowhere. That's a rut. That's when you're just doing things every day and they're not leading you someplace. It's like the same old thing. It's not really being productive in your life. Routines, on the other hand, are things that are actually enhancing your life. They're helping you grow. Things like sending out your clothes the day before, I mean, the night before, or writing down your goals every single day. These kind of things. These routines are more like when you see a hamster in a ball. Have you ever seen those hamster balls? So what they do is they run in the balls and it's actually getting them someplace. They can move the ball all around the house. They're so funny. If you haven't just, like, find a video or something because they're hilarious.

But these hamsters run like crazy inside this ball. But the ball actually moves. That's a routine. They feel the same. The hamster wheel. Excuse me. And the hamster ball, they feel the same. It's the same motion, but one is actually getting you someplace. So ruts are things that you're doing every day, but it's not really helping you. Like, yeah, you have a scoop of ice cream every day. Is that really helping you? Yeah, you check out Facebook every day and see what everyone's up to. Is that really moving you any place? So you got to think, are these routines, are these daily actions taking me someplace? That's the difference between a rut and a routine. A rut is a hamster wheel, A routine is a hamster ball. You are moving forward. You just don't realize it. So one, set up a reward. Number two, I want you to take inventory. Think about this. Like, a lot of times we'll be busy on our lives and we're doing our routines. We don't feel like it's going anywhere. What you need to do is, is maybe on a monthly basis, most definitely on a quarterly basis. That's why if you don't have a master mom planner, get a master mom planner. Because we do this on a quarterly basis. Every quarter you reevaluate how far you've come and kind of like tweak your goals and get those in place according to where you want to be going for the next 90 days. But have a monthly, definitely a quarterly inventory of your life. So you can say, oh, wait a minute, you know what? These goals actually are getting me someplace. This healthy eating actually is creating a difference. Laying out my clothes, writing my goals, making these follow up calls. All these routines actually are making a difference. So that's really important that you do create inventory in your life so you can measure it. A lot of people, I've heard them say, you know, I've been like, at this healthy eating thing, this exercise thing for like, months now, and I'm just not noticing a difference. And then they realized, oh, wait, this was my waist size, you know, in inches when I started. And now this is my waist size in inches. Now, wait, it is making a difference. Sometimes we just don't measure it, so we don't know. Now, number one is set up a reward. Number two is create an inventory. Number three. And this is vital, y'. All. This is so very important. You've got to have momentum. You've got to have momentum. We put the mom in momentum. Am I right, y'? All? That just came to me. Like, it's awesome. I'm sorry, I'm just so good at this. We put the mom in momentum. We are the mom in momentum. In order for your routines to not become ruts, you need to have Momentum, you need to have that drive. Think about that hamster in a ball. How hard was it to start? Like, it takes a lot more energy to start, start the ball rolling than it is to keep the ball rolling. The same thing is in your life with your routines. It's harder to start the ball rolling. But once you get those routines in place and you have momentum, it takes care of itself. You're, like swept up in it. It's like the difference between, like trying to creep out to the ocean. You know how you're like fighting the waves and then just like going with the tide. That's the difference between working without momentum and working with momentum. You need to put that tide effect into your life, that momentum effect where you're just like have the current sweeping you along. That's why in mom boot camp we have such a great, great results in there. We have such incredible testimonies because people are doing it as a tribe, moms are doing it as a tribe and they're moving along the current together so they're feeding off of each other's energy also. That's why as side mom master university, we have such incredible stories and such incredible results because we've got that momentum, that weekly check in, the weekly coaching, the, the groups where, you know, we're encouraging each other. You need momentum. In other words, you got to have your tribe. If you are not inside my master university, I just want to invite you right now. Just go to mommastery.com m o m m a s t e r y.com just check it out. Because if you don't have that momentum, you can feel isolated. And when you're isolated, you become overwhelmed. I remember feeling like that, especially when I was a new mom. I had a few kids, my house was a cluttered wreck. I would try fail, try fail. I had mom fatigue syndrome so bad. And one of the main reasons was because I did not have a tribe of people backing me up and encouraging me and supporting me, picking me up when I fell, fighting for me when I felt scared or under attack. You need to have that tribe and that tribe will be that current. It'll be that energy. When you're weak, you'll feed off of their strength. When you're strong, you can help them in their weakness. And when you have that momentum, you can move forward and get such big results in your life. So I hope this helps you because I don't want you to feel like you're in a rut. That's the worst feeling. And I definitely don't want you to feel isolated. Please, please reach out to me. Let me know how I can help you. Because I know what it's like to feel that way, to feel like you're in a rut. I don't want that to happen in your life. Reach out to me. You can go to my website, hannake.com you can go to mommastery.com get plugged into a tribe that can help you.
