EP017: Proof I'm The Meanest Mom Ever
25 Feb 2019 · 13 min
In this solo podcast episode, Hannah Keeley shares a candid story about a moment when she felt she became the "meanest mom" after harshly telling her youngest daughter to grab a trash bag when she felt sick about going to a music practice. She uses the anecdote to illustrate the importance of enforcing commitment, work ethic, and discipline in her homeschooling family. Drawing on Proverbs 22:6, she frames parenting as training children to become future leaders, "kings, priests, and soldiers" for God's kingdom, rather than merely raising dependent kids. Keeley critiques entitlement and laziness in young adults and emphasizes that doing the hard work now leads to easier lives later. Throughout, she promotes her Mom Mastery brand, including Mom Master University, a free Mom Show starter kit, and a time‑management program, urging listeners to visit mommastery.com and thatmomshow.com or text “kit” to 345 for resources.

Okay, Mama. I have evidence that I am, in fact, the meanest mom in the world. So if today you want to feel better about yourself as a mom, then hang out with me, and I guarantee you will. Here's the big question. How are these average, everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick? We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley, and I'm going to spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show. Hey, Mama. Okay, I'm hiding out in my closet. I'm actually supposed to be making dinner right now, but I figure, you know what? It can be a few minutes late, right? Because something's on my heart I want to share with you. So, yes, I am in the corner of my closet on the floor, talking to you. So it's kind of like me and you are just, you know, hanging out in my closet together. But here's the deal. I know this is going to probably create some polarity. I know I'm probably going to get some hate for this. I'm just asking you not to judge right now, especially if you have less than seven kids. If you have more than seven kids, I know you're not going to pass judgment on me because you get it. And I think most of you, since we've been hanging out and you probably listen to my other podcast, you get it, too. So I'm not that worried about sharing this with you, but just put the judgment aside and know that sometimes a mom hits a wall and kind of loses it. And this is what happened to me. So. So it was one of those days, and I felt like. So their room was. They had been keeping their room gross. They hadn't been really doing their chores efficiently. They had been not following through on some things, and just. I was irritated with it. And we invest a lot in our kids, you know, me, you. We all, like, give so much to our kids. And I was at that point, like, it had been a couple weeks of just kind of this whiny behavior, not wanting to go to school. And they only go to school, like, two days a week, y'. All. I homeschool, and they go to a co op, like, two days a week. And they were, like, whining about that, and they didn't want to go to their. Their practice for their musical that they're in, and that costs a lot of money. And I'm like, oh, my gosh. Like, guys, come on. Like, you've got it so good. And I just had it this one day. I just had it. So it was a Saturday morning, and they were supposed to get up and go to practice. And that they wanted to do. I don't make them do anything. They wanted to do this. And I don't know about you, but I feel like when you commit to something, you follow through with it. And I wanted to teach my kids that. I've always try to teach my kids that, like, there's a work ethic. You show up, you do what you have to do. When you commit, you follow through. It's not over till it's over. So they got up and they didn't want to go to practice. I'm like, guys, no. Like, you're in this. You're committed. Other people depend on you. Let's go. So they dragged around and telling me they weren't feeling good, and I was like, tough, let's go. Come on. Get up. Take a shower. Do what you need to do. You know, drink, make some hot tea if you need it. Drink something cold if you need it. Do what you need to do. Shake it off. Let's go. And my youngest daughter, like, this is evidence that I hit. I hit the point. Like, you know, there's a point. There's a point, and I hit it. I don't know if you've been there, if you're a mom, you've been there. But I hit the point. And I was like, okay, no, no, no. I don't want to hear you complain. If you're going to open up your mouth with a complaint, you better shut it. I don't want to hear it. And my youngest comes to the doll just a few minutes before they were about to leave. Said, mom, I think I'm going to throw up. And y', all, not even a hesitation. I said, then grab a trash bag on your way out. Like, I'm thinking to myself, like, after they left, I was like, oh, my gosh, that was so mean. Like, that was so mean. What kind of mom am I that my daughter says she feels like she's going to throw up, And I tell her, just grab a trash bag on your way out. Like, okay, so that's evidence. I was the meanest mom in the world. I was so mean at that point. But I'd had it. They had been griping too much, they've been complaining too much, and I wasn't going to let them short gun their duties. I probably went a little too far with that statement, but I just need to share that with you, because I'm sure you've hit your moment, too, and you feel bad about it later, but you're like, you know what? God's mercy is new every morning. Thank you, Jesus. And he always gives us a way to make things better. But also on the other side of that coin is this. Proverbs 22. 6 says, Train up a child in the way that they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it. I see way too many grown kids acting like children. Like high school, college in that launch period. Young adults who are acting entitled, like, no, I deserve this job. Like, I deserve this raise. I deserve this relationship. No, baby, if we got what we deserve, we don't have hell. Right? Thank you, Jesus, for redeeming us from that. But the truth of the matter is we have to train up our children in the way that they should go so that we can solidify their actions when they're older. If we want to raise. And the truth is, we're not raising children, y'. All. We're raising grown men and women. We've got to think of, how am I preparing this child for adulthood? And I don't want to prepare my children to be slackers. I don't want to prepare them to be lazy. I don't want to prepare them to be entitled. And I don't want to prepare them to not follow through on their commitments. I see too much of that. People don't follow through. And I want to raise up my kids to have a strong work ethic. And when they're committed, you're committed. Like that means something. There's value in it. Hey, Mama. We'll get right back to the podcast, but did you know there is an entire online university just for moms? If you're ready to get radical results in your life, you just go to mommastery.com. that's M O M M A S T E R-Y dot com. Make sure you check it out and take your free quiz Again, that's mommastery.com m o m m a s t e r y dot com. Now back to the podcast. So, yeah, I probably went a little too far. I understand. But I want to raise up my children so they just don't take the easy way out. I see a lot of moms like that. I coach moms. It's what I do. We have a lot of amazing women inside Mom Master University. And sometimes for these moms, for the first time in their lives, by working with me, they have someone who Holds them to a higher standard. She's like, no. Get out of bed. Like, no. You've got a life to live. You've got goals to reach. You've got an anointing over your life. You've got. Got what it takes to change this world. And if you take the easy way out, not only will you not rise up to everything God has created you to be, but the people who are here, whose lives you can change, you'll never touch them. So see, it's not just about us raising up our kids to be independent and strong and have a good work ethic and to be disciplined and to be diligent. It's not just that it goes so far beyond them because I believe we're not just raising adults, we're raising world changers. We're raising soldiers. We're raising anointed kings and priests who will bring forth the kingdom of God on this earth. Makes. It makes you look at your 9 year old a little different, doesn't it? We have a huge commitment and sometimes it's hard. It's hard to make those calls. It's hard when all you want to do is you make, you want to make it easier for your kid. You don't want them to suffer you. You don't want them to go through hard times. I get it. It's that battle where constantly we feel like we're just torn all the time. We want to make it easy for them. We want to make things simpler. We want to say, yeah, baby, you don't have to. You don't have to do this assignment. You know what? You don't have to show up. It's okay. It would make it so much easier. But think about the battle that we are preparing them for in the long run. The battle when they're adults and they have to do a presentation in front of a board and they didn't finish it all and they don't want to show up or think about it when they have a job and they're working long hours and they don't feel like they're getting paid enough and they just don't want to follow through. Think about the relationship when they don't feel like they're getting the fair shake and they're sick of it. Are we going to raise up men and women who are just going to take the easy way out? No. And sometimes it makes us feel like we're the meanest mom in the world. Yeah. We'll say some things we regret. Seriously, grab a trash bag on your way Out. Like who, who did I turn into? Like I was an ogre. I was basically Shrek. Okay. I was Shrek. Bye. And stay out of my swamp. Yeah, that was me. But I just want to encourage you, don't be hard on yourself. But look at what you can do with your children today. To raise them up to have an easier life later. And I promise you, it is easier when you're diligent and when you're disciplined because you do the hard things now, then you're going to live a better life later. It's hard now, but it's easy later. We got to get through the hard things. You got to get through the messy before it gets clean. You got to get through the chaos before it gets peaceful. You got to get through the hard before it gets easy. And if we raise up our children so as soon as it gets hard and as soon as it gets chaotic, then, then they back away, then we're preventing them from reaching that point where it's easy and peaceful and good. It's a climb. And you gotta help them. And we don't help them by enabling them. We help them by training them up in the way that they should go so that when they are old, I'm talking old, you know, like 20s, like really old. When they are old, they will not depart from it. You're not just raising up children, girl. You're not just raising up kids. You're raising up kings and priests and queens and princesses and. And glorious soldiers in the army of God. Not to put a lot of pressure on you or anything, right? I love you, girl. You can do this. I got your back. I am praying over you. I am believing for you. And we're joined hands in this together.
