Get Real With Yourself (the poop bag episode)
8 Feb 2019 · 7 min
In this solo podcast episode, Hannah Keeley walks her dog and uses a sudden poop‑bag mishap as a vivid metaphor for the messiness of motherhood and the importance of being honest about one’s struggles. She repeatedly urges listeners—primarily moms—to stop saying “I’m fine” when they’re not, to acknowledge pain, and to seek growth. Through a blend of humor, a personal “mirror‑wink” exercise, a biblical illustration from Mark 9:21, and a heartfelt call for tribal support, she challenges women to be raw, to share burdens, to pray for one another, and to ask God for the next “mountain” when life feels comfortable. The episode ends with a practical invitation to contact her, comment, and receive a free “mom‑show starter kit.”

Hey, guys. Hannah here. And we're going to talk today about how to get real with yourself. Because you don't need to say everything's okay if it isn't. How about it? How about let's just be real?
Here's the big question. How are these average, everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick. We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley, and I'm going to spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show.
All right, so I'm walking the dog. Usual. And I want to bring you guys along with me. You know, everyone likes a little company. And I want you to do me a favor right now. If you're driving in your car listening to me, I want you to look in the rear view mirror. Just give yourself a wink. Look at you. Look at you. Come on, seriously, Catch that reflex of yourself. Give yourself a wink, because you are so awesome. If you're in your house, go find a mirror. Give yourself a wink right now. Just. Just little wink. Say, girl, you doing it. You on the right track. You good? You good. I'm so excited that we get to hang out together because, you know, it's always fun to take someone on a walk with you, especially when you're waiting for your dog to poop. It's always good. But this is what I want to talk with you about.
That we need.
To stop saying we're okay if we're not. And if you are okay, then that means you've hit a plateau and you need to be growing more. Okay. So when you get comfortable, that means maybe it's time to get out of this comfort zone and start doing some growing. But for the most part, a lot of us are struggling, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's the human experience. Experience. You know, we are always hopefully growing to new and better levels in our life, but if we're always just saying everything's okay, then we're not only refusing help and. Oh, good, good. You know why it's good? Because my dog just went poop. And now I can go ahead and get this task over with and just focus on us hanging out together. Do you mind, like, hanging with me while I collect the poop? Is that, like, below you? I hope not, because I could just pretend I didn't see it and walk on, but that wouldn't be good, would it? Okay, so you're actually gonna hang with me. Oh, no. This did not happen, y'. All. Y', all, this did not happen. The poop bag ripped. It did. It, like, ripped in half? My gosh. Okay, so I don't know what to do here. Okay. All right, I'm folding over the poop bag. Oh, God. Oh, my God. Oh, my. Oh, Lord. Oh, God. What if I touch it? Holy cow. All right. Oh, my God. It got on my fingers. I'm not even kidding, y'. All. It got on my fingers. Oh, my God. This isn't funny. Oh, my Lord. Okay, I'm trying to wipe it off. It got on my thumb. Oh, my gosh. Guys, I'm sorry if I'm being, like, gross. Oh, God. Oh, my gosh. Okay, hold on. I'm trying to wipe. Oh, my God, my thumb stinks, y'. All. This is not funny. I cannot believe this happened right in the middle of my podcast. Well, yes, I can. I'm a mom. Of course it happens. Of course my dog poops when I'm recording the podcast, and of course I get it. The poop bag splits in half, and of course I get it on my hand. Oh, my gosh. Okay, I'm gonna give it one more good wipe, y'. All. It still stinks. Okay, all right, you know what I'm doing? I'm just going to finish up the walk, and I'm just going to wash my hands when I get home. I. I'm sorry, but you just have to do what you got to do. Y', all, come on. Don't judge me, please, because you've been in bigger poop before. I know it. If you're a mom. Come on. You've had the poop go out of the diaper and go on to your clothes. You've been pooped on. It's happened at church, happened at home. You know it. You've had the spit up all over your shoulder. This time it's just dog poop, okay? So don't judge me. Please don't judge me. Okay. Where was I? God, it stinks. Okay, wow. You know how people, like, have these podcast studios and they, like, have walls that absorb the sound and they have notes, and it's all professional and. Yeah, you know what? If there was ever a guess as to if I'm a mom and if I have to embrace imperfection, you just. You just got it. You just. That just clarified everything right there. Now. I was talking about not being okay. No, it's not okay that the poop bag split in half and I got poop on my hand. Dog poop. Fresh Fresh, warm dog poop. Oh, God. Oh, that's bad. But that's not okay. But here's what we do. Here's what we do, and we've all been guilty of it. People are like, how you doing? Oh, I'm fine. I'm fine. When we know we're struggling, we know there's something like there's a bill we can't pay, or, or one of our kids is being rebellious, or our marriage is on the brink, or our house is a cluttered mess, or we know people are coming to visit us and we, and. And we're struggling with that and we gotta get all these ducks in the, in a row. And we're just like, moms have to do so much. And we spend our time saying everything's fine when it isn't. One of my favorite verses in the Bible, I have a lot of favorite verses. But one thing I love, just because it showed such a compassionate side of Jesus, was Mark 9:21. So this man has come to Jesus. Come on, Fizz, you already got it all out of your system. So come on. Mark 9:21, where this man comes to Jesus and he's really struggling with his kid. His kid is having seizures. Bible scholars think maybe he was. He had epilepsy, but he was having seizures. Throwing him about, throwing him into the.
Fire, into the water.
And he brought his son to Jesus. And Jesus could have just healed him right then, right? He could have just said, oh, you know what? Go. Your faith has healed you. Amen. Hallelujah. Passa nachos is good. But what Jesus said just showed such a beautiful side of him. He said, how long has he been like this? And what he was saying to him is, sweetheart, how long have you been struggling, dad? How long have you been struggling with your child? How long has your child been fighting this illness, this demon? Jesus was showing that he had such compassion, that he cared not just for his healing, but for the suffering that preceded his healing. And he was willing to talk about it. He was willing to say, look, I care not just about your child, but about you. How long has he been like this? How many times have you had those sleepless nights? Nights? How many days have you had to stay home from work because you're so worried about his health, about his seizures? I want to know about the suffering just as much as I'm willing to help you with the healing. Jesus showed that he cared about our day to day, our suffering, our questions, our frustrations. And the thing is, if you do have the questions and the struggles and the frustrations and the anguish and the insecurity and the fears. God's big enough to take it. God's big enough to take it and say, all right, baby, I got you. Now let's get this thing straightened out. See, Jesus was ready to heal, but he showed that compassionate side. I care about what you've been through. I care that the poop bag split and I gotta wash your hands extra good tonight. He cares about every little thing. So what I'm telling you is when we go through life saying, everything's fine, I'm doing great. Yeah, doing fine. And that's awesome. If you are doing fine. Yes, wonderful. That's awesome. But I also want to encourage you. If you really are, then challenge yourself. Go to God. Say, God, I'm doing great. I'm getting results. God, show me what the next challenge is. That's like. Was it. Was it Caleb who said, God, give me a mountain to climb. Like, I'm ready to go. I am ready and willing to go. Give me another mountain to climb. So if things are going great, awesome, go to God. See what's my next mountain. Because if you're not growing, you're dying. What's my next mountain? Give me my next challenge. Give me my next impossible project so I can show how awesome you are. But if things are not going fine, let's be willing to admit it. Let's be willing to share in the struggle, because we've all been there. We are a tribe of moms, and we're here to grow as a tribe, to support one another, as a tribe, to fight, like a tribe to. And that means when someone's weak, we step in. When someone needs support, we hold them up. That's what we do. So we are just as willing to lend compassion as we are to be real and say that we need it. So let's quit with the I'm fine, everything's good, and let's be real, say, you know what? I'm struggling a little bit. I'd love for you to join me in faith. Not to share, not to air out your dirty laundry, not to say, poor me, woe is me. You don't understand my life. Stop. That's belly aching. And we do not put up with that. But if you're in the middle of something, if you're believing for something, be willing to say, it's not all fine. Let me tell you about what's going on in my life. And let me tell you about what God is showing me. Let me tell you about this challenge that I'm facing right now, this mountain that I am speaking out of my life, and join me. Join me in it. Because if we're ever going to be real with ourselves, we need to be real with other people, too. You know what I mean? And if we keep on saying everything's fine when it isn't, what it also does is it numbs ourselves. It numbs us from the reality of our situation. So you listen to yourself more than you listen to anyone else. And if you're always saying it's fine, then what are you telling your subconscious? Oh, everything's okay. I don't need to do anything. I don't need to grow. I don't need to put any skin in the game. I don't need to put any effort into it. Everything's fine. And we get complacent, we get numb. We basically sink into that paralysis where we don't even know how to move. So let's be real, let's be raw, let's be open, and let's support one another. And, moms, I'm giving you another call to arms. Okay, here's something else. When someone is real with you, someone is sharing a burden. Stand up for them, protect them, Stand in the gap for that person, believe with that person. But please don't ever, ever talk about them, or I know you wouldn't, because you know what you're listening to this podcast shows you got character, right? But it's so tempting sometimes to make ourselves feel better about speaking ill of someone else. What I want to encourage you is let's be so real and raw with each other that we also stand up for one another and support one another, and we don't let anyone. We fight for them. We don't let anyone speak negatively over that person, including ourselves. How about that? Can we hold ourselves to that integrity where we treat everyone, every other mom, as if we would want to be treated? Yeah, let's do that. Let's love our neighbor. Let's. Let's put feet to this whole love our neighbor thing and show the world how it's supposed to be done. How about it? Now? I hope you'll take this seriously. I hope we can be real and raw. And I want you to, like, go to my website, like, contact me, leave a comment. I want to know how this affects you. What are you going through? I want to know how I can stand in the gap for you, how I can pray for you, and how we're going to be more supportive of one another and Now I'm gonna go wash my hands because that is some funky junk right there. Okay? Yeah, that's what. That's what happens. We're moms. That's what happens. I love you, girl. Love you so much. Be blessed like crazy.
