Hannah Keeley introduces a faith-based approach to decluttering that starts in your mind, not your closet. She uses a three-part model of clutter (time, space, matter) and the faith formula (thought to feeling to action to result) to help you rethink what you own and why.

So I got a question for you, Master Mom. Is clutter a problem? Well, if it is, get ready because it's not going to be anymore. That's right. This entire coaching series is all about decluttering. But we're going to do it a little different here. You're going to declutter from the inside out. Welcome to Mom Mastery University. The education every mom should have had but didn't. I'm Hannah Keeley, America's number one mom coach. And class is now in session. Hello and welcome to Making the Cut. It's another Master mom coaching series and I'm your coach, Hannah Keeley. And I'm going to be walking you through how to declutter your home head first. This is a three part coaching series and I'm so excited you're here because we're camping out in the Fortress Pier Pillar. And if you've been inside Mom Master University for a while, you know we have six Pillars Fortress is our home. How to create that home that's organized, that's clean, that feels elegant and energizing, and all those things that you want your home to feel. Now, you can't feel this way in a home that's full of clutter. So what we're going to be doing throughout this entire series is not just how to get rid of clutter. We all know, right? We all know the mechanics of how to get rid of clutter, right? You take a bunch of stuff and you either give it away, throw it away, or put it away. It's not that hard. But here's the deal. If it's not that hard, why do we still have clutter? Why do we still have problems? So as usual, inside Mom Master University, we always take an inside out approach. What that means is we work on the inside mom before we can really, really do any work on the outside mom. So if you're having a hard time getting rid of clutter, it may not be a thing about your time or your energy or your home or how much square footage you have or how much organizing tools you have or anything about that. It may just be something inside your mind or your heart that's holding you back from that. So that's what we do. That's what the whole faith formula is about. And that is if you've been inside Mom Mastery for a while, or if you've been inside Covenant Coach Academy. And you know, it's kind of the core of everything we do. How we get such amazing transformation as moms is we use the faith formula, which Means we always go to the thought, what do I think about this? Because that's going to create the way I feel about it. And of course, when I feel a certain way, I'm going to do something. And then when I do something, well, I'm going to have a different result. So we're going to climb into this new coaching series and really we'll climb inside the clutter as well and figure out what to do with the clutter, about what to do with ourselves and facing the clutter and how to really get rid of it for good. So this is a head first dive into making the cut. What stays, what goes, how we decide that. And we're going to work with this first part, part one, on making the cut in your head. That's why it's a head first dive into declaring get it head. Like working on your thoughts. Yeah, you get it. Okay, so let's talk about this because we're going to go with the brain first. That logical part of us where, and I think that's an easy place to get to because we kind of know what we're thinking about clutter. So we're going to go into a. Just explore, if you can think about it, the physics of clutter. The physics of what we think about our home and about the items in our home, about how we approach those items. So if you look at physics, it's basically divided into time, space and matter, right? Yeah, I know we're gonna get a little scientific with the clutter, but when you're talking about the brain, we have to get into the science of the brain to know what is making us keep clutter, what's making us hold on to it, what's preventing us from getting rid of it. So we're gonna go and talk about the time, the space and the matter of how to declutter headfirst. So we're getting into that mind and talking about that. So this first part, let's talk about time because it really, it takes time to declutter. Right. And a lot of you are probably like, Hannah, I don't have the time to declutter. Like, I know I need to get rid of stuff. I know exactly, if I had the time, I know exactly what I would do. I would start with all of those pots and pans that I have that I need to declutter. Then I would start on the dining room table and I would get rid of that. And then I would, I would work with all of the bills and the papers. I would declutter all that stuff. I know you may think it's a time element, but I want to show you about time, because on one side, we understand it does take time to declutter. You're absolutely right. But then if you flip it over and look at the other side of that, well, clutter takes up our time. If time is a precious commodity, and it is for every single moment, okay, time is more valuable than money. Time is our most valuable asset. Why? Because you can always make more money, but you can't make more time. Think about that. As a mom, one of my most precious expenses of time, and I'm so grateful for this, is the time that I spent with my children when they were young, because guess what? You can't ever get that back. The time that I spent with my husband can't ever get that back. So you can always get more energy, right? You can drink a cup of coffee. You can always get more. More money. But time, you never have any more of that than what you already are using. So time is our most precious resource. So that's why I want to start there. Clutter could be robbing you of time. How much time does? Think about this. Do you spend looking for things that you can't find, or maybe time going to the store, even money buying stuff that. That you know you have somewhere, but you can't find it, so you order it on Amazon real quick or run to the grocery store and. And get it. Or maybe. Maybe the time it takes when you can't find a document, right? And so you have to, like, search for that document or maybe, like, oh, heaven forbid, contact the DMV or the government to, like, find that document again for you. That takes a lot of time. Not just time, though. It takes stress, right? It takes your. Your energy away from you. Sometimes it's very costly. So time is our most valuable resource, but clutter is stealing that time. So I want you to get this idea because we're gonna talk about, you know, really getting into this concept of what can I think about time to actually motivate me to declutter. So I love to. Of course, everything is, like, backed in God's word, right? So Psalm 90:12 tells us this. Teach us to number our days so that we may get us a heart of wisdom, right? God wants us to number our days. That doesn't mean, like, oh, I have so many days left in my life. No, it's not that. It's about understanding the preciousness of that day that you can't get a day back. I Will, you will never have today back. You, you won't have yesterday back. Tomorrow hasn't even happened yet today. You will never get this moment back. How are you spending this moment? I want to show you the stat that I read the other day, like, totally shocked me. Moms, on average spend over eight hours a day on a screen. And I don't think all of that time is spent, you know, inside mom, Master University, growing yourself, right? Some of that is just a distract or a buffering agent. Like spending time on social media, right? Like more reels, more videos, more things to look at, more distraction, more following the rabbit hole. And then you get. Start clicking on that button and clicking on that button. All of a sudden you, like, get hair extensions in the mail. Say, how did I pay for this? What happened? I just got lost right in the, in that social media jungle out there. I just, I took the bait. I got lost. And so I want to share with you, like, time is our most precious resource. So we really need to be conscious. Like, lord, help me to number this. Help me to understand that I can't get a minute back. The minutes are ticking, right? The hours are going by, like the days are going by. If I'm not conscious of this, if I don't raise my awareness of it, I'm not going to spend this wisely. And clutter could be that thing that's pulling me away from the best use of my time. And so I want to, in every one of this time, space and matter, I want to give you a thought, because remember, we're diving into it head first. We're working on the head first, right? I want to give you a thought that you can meditate on that could really dramatically change what you think about your time. So instead of like, oh, it's going to be. It's going to take too much time to declutter. I want to give you this one thought, and here it is. Getting rid of clutter is a great way to spend time. Think about that. Have you ever, like, worked on decluttering with your kids? A lot of us would love more time with our family. What if you made decluttering an activity work with your kids? It's like, oh, but Hannah, they want to grab everything from. From there. Maybe not. Maybe if you taught them about the beauty of opening up space and getting more organized and how, how you love, like this is. This could be our dream home, but some clutter's keeping us from it. So you can help mom and we can do this together. And again, we Know the mechanics of it. Put everything in one pile and then decide. Like, even set a timer. Remember, count those moments. Help me, God, number my days. Help me to listen to it sometimes. That's why. I mean, I'll tell you, I'm gonna be honest. That's why I love to set a timer, because it makes me number my seconds. I can hear them ticking, so that raises their value to me, and I'm able to use my time more effectively. So set that timer and decide, all right, do we give it away? Throw it away. Put it away. Awesome. Where are we going to put it away? Everything's got a home, so go put that away. This could be a great way to spend time with your family. So this is the thought. Getting rid of clutter is a great way to spend time. Now let's move on to space, time, space, and matter. Now, space. Wow. Don't you just love the idea of open space? One of my fondest places to be is at the beach. I love it. As soon as I step onto a beach, it just feels expansive. You can't see where the ocean ends, and you can't see where the. Where. Where the. Where the sand ends on either side. It just feels so expansive and so spacious. It's kind of like I always tell moms every day, make sure you get outside. Get outside. So why is that important? Because you need to be in a place every single day, just for a little while, that has no walls and no ceiling. Why? Because God wants to expand us. He wants to grow his kingdom in us and through us. We can't do that when we feel limited and confined. So think about how you feel when you step into open space. Have you ever gone into, like. Like, empty homes? Like, maybe you're looking at a home or empty space, or maybe like, you've been. You have to clean out the carpet, right? You have to do a deep cleaning, and all the furniture has to get moved out of a room. Now, whenever you've walked into one of those empty rooms with your kids, what is the first thing they do? If your kids are anything like my kids used to be, they would run around. Like, whenever there's an open, empty space, it's just like, they just start running, right? I don't know if your kids do that, but there's something about us where we're called to occupy space. Now, there's a verse, Luke 19:13, and Jesus was sharing this because he was talking about this parable. And he said, therefore, a certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself, a kingdom and to return. So that's a metaphor about Jesus going away to create a home for us and coming back, right? Because Jesus is coming back, all right, He's, he's, he's gone, so setting up a kingdom for us, but he's coming back to get us. So, so this is really a metaphor about Jesus, a parable about Jesus going ahead of us and what he tells us to do until he comes back. So the next verse, verse 13 says, and he called his ten servants and delivered them ten pounds and said unto them, occupy till I come. So think about that. God has called you. You're here inside Mom, Master University. So I know you're called for such a time as. Just as this. Just like Esther, right? You're called for such a time as this. And I also know that he has delivered talents into you. So those, those were the. Delivered the ten pounds to his ten servants. I know he's given you gifts, he's given you an anointing. He's given you talents. He's given you maybe compassion, kindness, creativity, abilities that, that stand out. He's deposited something in you. And this is what he tells us to do until his return. He says, now go occupy till I come. How do we occupy space? I think that's that natural inclination to expand the kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. And this is what we're called to do, occupy space. Like go and, and, and think about those pals, those talents, and we're going to go, go into business, go buy, go sell, go occupy, go make relationships, go expand this thing. That's why when you walk into an empty room, the first thing you want to do is take territory. You want to occupy that space. It's a natural inclination. Now here's the problem. A lot of us don't have space in our homes because the clutter already occupies that space. How does that feel to you? Like, I really want you to think about the space in your home. Does it feel constrictive or does it feel expansive? The goal here is to create a home that feels expansive so that now, the same reason I tell moms, go outside every day, no walls, no ceiling. The more space we can create in our surroundings, the more space we can have in our mind so we can think more clearly, we can operate more effectively, we can have better communication. When we feel restricted and confined and we start to stress out more, we start to operate with like a frenetic energy that is almost like a knee jerk response. We get angrier, quicker we blow our fuse, we, we are triggered more easily. You know, I know trigger is a, is a word that's been way overused, but you, you get what I mean? Like, we are not able to operate as effectively mentally as we could if we just have more of a spacious environment. So how do we do this? Well, understand we need space. Now if clutter is already occupying that space, what if we could understand, I'm doing this for my well being, for my mental health. I'm doing this because I deserve to feel an expansion, energy. I deserve to, to be in a place where I can think clearly, think effectively, operate more harmoniously with my family, be a better mom, you know, I mean, it just makes us a better mom. When you're able to think clearly and operate and more effectively and have better well being and better mental health, it's just going to make you show up a lot better. So think about doing this almost like an assignment from your doctor. Okay, here's an assignment from your coach. Okay. Clear out the clutter for your mental health so you can have that expanse, expansive feeling. Now here's the deal. I know you probably can't do your entire home at one time. So what do you do? You can do one space at a time. You know, it's so funny, whenever, I don't know if you're like, I am, but whenever I declutter something, let's say I'll, I'll go in the pantry and I'll declutter it, get everything organized, wipe out the shelves. And what I do is, is I just have to take it all in. Are you like that too? Do you sometimes like declutter a drawer and you just have to look at it for a while because it feels so good. Or hello. Or declutter a pantry. And I'm just, I just like to open up the doors of my pantry, just look at it for a while. It's like, oh, that looks so good. So organized. It just feels better, right? Clean out a, clean out your linen closet. And it's just like, I'm just gonna sit here and look at it. I don't know if you're like that, but something about seeing a well organized, expansive, even empty space can make you feel just. I have room to breathe. My mind can actually breathe now. I have so much space. Space is one of the, that necessary criteria that, that you need in your life in order to think more clearly. So I want to give you a thought. As usual, we're going with a thought around everything so we can like Meditate on that and then move forward. So the thought here is, I open up space for God to show up in extraordinary ways. I open up space for God to show up in extraordinary ways. So I want you to think about the clutter like this. What if that clutter, the. The laundry basket full of socks that's spilling out of it without matches, all the bills laying there on the edge of the kitchen counter, the books stacked up, right. That don't have a place to go. The. The laundry, the. I mean, you name it. Like, everyone has their favorite clutter that's sitting around the house, right? But when you think about it, those hot spots in your home, those spots that usually clutter collects, it could be by a door. It could be a flat surface near an entrance of the home, usually a kitchen counter or dining room table, maybe spaces in the inside of doors to put things that you want to put away in that room. These are hot spots in your home. When you look at that hot spot, I want you to really think about how it makes you feel. It probably makes you feel frustrated because it's like more for me to do. It probably makes you feel a little bit of condemnation because you're not doing it. It probably makes you feel inadequate. It makes you feel urgent and rushed. Now, knowing you feel this way, can anything effective, any effective behavior come out of that feeling? No. You just want to distract yourself from it. You're going to go to your phone and scroll. You're going to turn on the tv, watch some Netflix. You're gonna. You're gonna distract yourself some way because it just feels so low energy. So what we're doing when we're decluttering is we're opening up space. And when you have open space, guess what? You have high energy. So this is what you're doing. When you open up space. It's not just for your mental health, but it's also for your overall energy. It'll be elevated because now you feel. You look in those same spots and they look good and they look clean. There's nothing there. It's empty. You don't have the condemnation, the inadequacy, the urgency, the overwhelm. You don't have any of that. So it doesn't feel low energy and tight. And now it feels, guess what, the word is expansive. It feels like you can roll your shoulders back, lift your chin up a little bit. You can breathe easier. So I want you to think, God can't show up in really, like, amazing ways in my life if I'm not Leaving room for him. What? If you can think about it that way, I'm not just getting rid of this clutter to make space for me. I'm getting rid of this clutter to make space for God to show up too. Because if I'm always distracted by the clutter, if I'm always overwhelmed, if I'm always keeping condemnation on myself, then guess what? God's gonna want me to show up in certain ways. He's gonna have a blessing for me. He's gonna have a miracle, a breakthrough. But I'm not even gonna see the door open for that miracle or that breakthrough. Cause I'm so distracted by my clutter, and I feel so low energy. So, you tracking with me? Do you see how clutter is so much more than just get rid of it? Just give it away to Goodwill? No, it's not that easy. Because there's a lot of mental garbage that's standing in the way of me getting rid of that clutter. So here's where we're going with that. Time. Getting rid of clutter is a great way to spend time. Space. I open up space for God to show up in extraordinary ways. And of course, the last thing is matter. Remember, we did time, space, and matter. Okay? So let's dive in. When it comes to matter, I want you to think. Why do we say things like, what's the matter? What really. What really matters here? What's the matter with you? What are we talking about? We're usually talking about an issue that's taking precedence. So matter isn't just like the physical thing that you can, you know, you. You can touch, you can see, you can feel. It's not just that. It's what your heart can touch, see, and feel. That's why we often say, what's the matter? What is the issue here? What's the. What's the. What's the top importance? What's. What's the. What's the priority? What is occupying a space in your mind? So when you're talking about matter, it's not just the physical side of clutter, but how that clutter matters to you. So think about it in a physical way. So clutter is matter. That stack of books, the socks, the. The bills, the pile of shoes by the door, whatever that looks like. It's stuff you can touch, feel, and see. And yes, it is matter that is taking up space. And we already talked about space. But I want to talk about the matter in your mind. So think about this. What really matters to you when you're thinking about clutter, and usually clutter is stuff that it's just stuff we've collected in our home that doesn't have a home. So it's like I call clutter like homeless objects. Right. Because everything has a home. It either belongs in the trash or it belongs in. In someone else's home, or it has a specific home in your home. So if you're talking about, like, homeless items, that's what clutter is, and we just haven't dealt with it yet. So there could be some things I'm gonna. I'm gonna dig a little deep here. There could be some things in your home that you just don't want to deal with. Some. Sometimes you think, well, I don't want to declutter, Hannah, because it's just not fun. Like, I'd rather be doing something else. Like, I get it, but what's at the root of that? Avoidance. What else in life are you avoiding? What else in life really matters to you, but you're just not facing it? You're not dealing with it. So you know me by now, and you know I'm always going to go a little deeper than you want to go. That's why I always say, whenever you're tuning into coaching, put on your big girl pants and your steel toe boots. Right? You may want to write that down. Like, what to bring to coaching. Bring a pen, bring some paper, bring my big girl pants and my steel toe boots, and then you're ready for coaching with Hannah. Okay? But I want you to think about this. What really matters. And when we look at the clutter, we have to say, how does this matter to me? Is it enriching my life, or is it distracting from my life? We have to answer some hard questions. Is it making my life better or worse? It's. Is it. Is it suffocating me, or is it freeing me? What is this clutter doing in my life? So I want you to imagine, like, I know there's this big push on minimalist life. Like, you don't need a lot of stuff. You need the minimal amount of stuff. I am definitely not a minimalist, so. But it's okay if you are. I love that about you. That's awesome. And I know a lot. I have a lot of friends who are minimalists, and they have, like, you walk in, and it's very clean, open space, very minimal objects. It's funny because it seems like the more life I live, the more stuff I collect, right? And so it's almost like I always have to Stay one step ahead and be asking myself, wait, why am I holding on to this? Does it really matter? Now I'm sharing about the minimalist life because you don't have to live minimally to live clutter free. Okay? A minimal life, minimalism, like the push toward minimalism, does mean I don't need anything extra. I have two coffee cups, that's enough. I have two pillows, that's enough. I don't need a lot of shoes. Like, awesome. I like I said I'm not a minimalist. I like a lot of shoes. I like a lot of coffee mugs, but that's okay. So whether you're a minimalist or maximalist, it doesn't matter. You can still live in a home that's clutter free. So I want to share this with you because I want you to be able to ask yourself some hard questions. So remember, this is head first. We're doing the mind work first. I want you to this week, I want you to look at that clutter and I want you to ask yourself this question. Why does this matter? Okay. Pick up every object. Why does this matter? And to answer that, we have to say, does it feel authentic? That means I'm not validating and I'm not like, oh, well, I'm keeping around because. Excuse. Right? Does it feel authentic? And does it feel abundant? And is it accessible? So that's the question you're going to ask yourself. Look at the clutter. Why does this matter to me? Is it authentic? Do I really want to hold on to it? Really? I'm not just making an excuse. I really want to keep this in my life. Does it feel abundant? I'm not just keeping this because I'm afraid I'm going to run out. Right. And does it feel like it's successful? I can get to it whenever I want. If you can answer those questions, yes, then it matters to you and hold onto it. Now, the work you're going to be doing after this, I really want you to get inside Mom Master University. If you are not already inside Mom Master University, make sure you get inside this week because we're working through this together. We're doing that momentum work together. Right? So that means we're going to do the extended work. And the extended work is I'm going to give you specific exercises to do around this clutter so you can ask these hard questions. You can go into, go into it headfirst and be able to really make progress. So I'm not going to give you any decluttering assignments. Necessarily, there may be a few there, but we're going to first do the decluttering in your mind. So I want to give you a thought. We're going to ask ourselves these questions about does this really matter to me? Do I really want this in my life? Is it authentic? Is it abundant? Is it accessible? But I want to give you this thought to hold on to. And here's this thought. Everything in my home matters. Think about this. Everything in my home matters. That means nothing in my home is insignificant. Down to this pin is significant. This bouquet of flowers that I'm looking at right here. It's significant. It matters to me. So that way you can ask yourself some criteria. You can use some criteria and say, you know what? This really doesn't matter. It doesn't feel authentic. It doesn't feel like I'm exercising abundance. And it certainly isn't accessible because if I really needed it, I wouldn't even know where to find it. There's no home for it. So we're going to do some of that work. So make sure you get inside Mom Master University. Do that extended work. And if you're not inside our Elite program, sister, now is the time to get inside Elite because we're doing this all together, a group.
