Mama! Here are the 4 ways to get your EMOTIONS under CONTROL!
11 Apr 2019 · 13 min
Hannah Keeley walks mothers through four ways to manage overwhelming emotions: recognize them as clues to your thoughts, use a seven-second breath to step back, capture unhelpful thoughts like a spell, and remember you're not your emotions. She frames emotional regulation as self-compassion, not weakness.

Hey, mama, it's Hannah here. And I know what it's like when your emotions get totally out of whack. When you just feel like you're a prisoner to your emotions. And you're like, what is wrong with me? You're happy, but then you're angry and then you're sad. And the worst, like, the absolute worst is when you're yelling at your kids thinking, what is wrong with me? What? Why am I so angry? Why am I turning into this, like. Like this horrible screaming shrew? Like, what is wrong with me? I'm telling you, nothing's wrong with you. But you do need to learn how to get control of your emotions so that they do not get control of you. So I got four ways. I'm going to share it with you really quick right now because this is vital for you to know, because when you're. Listen to this, this is super important. Because when your emotions go up, your intellect goes down. Here's the big question. How are these average, everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick? We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley and I'm going to spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show. That means when you get all fired up and you get all emotional and you start making emotional decisions, then the logic, the reason, the intellect downhill all the way. So this is commonly what happens with moms like me and you sometimes will revert to emotions because that's just our primitive brain, that we're just trying to protect ourselves. And we often do that through emotions. So what happens is we do things that often we regret. We might yell at our kids, we might say something rude to our husbands. We might just start crying to our children because they didn't do what we wanted. And we're like, what? I'm not this weak, am I? Well, I want to let you know, first of all, emotions are not a sign of weakness. That's number one. Number one is to understand what emotions are. Emotions are a way for our brain to tell us what we're thinking. Okay, get that down. Emotions do not. They're not weak, and they're not like a sign of any, you know, imbalance. Emotions are normal. We're supposed to have those emotions. God gives us those emotions so that we can know what our brain is thinking. It's a way to disclose things to us. So it's really important that you understand that you don't hate on yourself ever. And you don't judge yourself ever. You just kind of understand, okay, this emotion, whether it's sadness, anger, jealousy, frustration, despair, anxiety, depression, whatever that emotion is, what we can do if we are really have mercy and grace with ourselves, we can say, hmm, this is a good way to understand. What thought am I holding? What thought am I holding right now? If it's sadness, what thought was in my head just prior to that emotion? And if we can get down to what our thought was, often we can look at it with more logic and more grace and say, oh, that's why sometimes that, that understanding is enough to help us tame our emotions so that our emotions can. It's not. Nothing's wrong with our emotions, but we don't want those elevated, out of control emotions. So it's a way for us to level out our emotions so we can begin to think more logically and hence more productively and constructively and creatively about a situation. Well, you're all emotional, you're not productive, you're not creative, you're not trying to find solutions, you're just reacting. So number one is to make sure you understand what emotions are and you don't let it cause you to get frustrated with yourself. You just allow it to give you a revelation about yourself. Okay? So number two is you've got to get objective. The problem with emotions though is that they're so subjective. Like emotions are just all feeling based, right? So if you can, it's called metacognition. And metacognition simply means to think about what you're thinking about. If you have been through Mambu Camp, you know what metacognition is, we talk some about it inside Mom Master University and it's that, that act of being able to step outside yourself and get objective and really think about what you're thinking about. So if you can get objective, you can see yourself with a little more reason, a little more logic, a little more love, and you can, you can not just be reactionary, but step outside of yourself and be a little more productive and say, oh, this is what my emotions are. Okay, this is what my emotions are. I can understand it, I can be objective about it. It's just, it's just a feeling. It's not the end of the world. I'm still alive, I'm still breathing, I'm still standing up or I'm still laying down, but my heart is still beating. I'm surviving, I'm alive. And sometimes that's enough to just be able to handle that little emotional burp that we have, you know, is to step outside yourself and get objective about your feelings. I know getting objective about being subjective is a hard thing, but I know you can do it. And as you practice it more and more, it becomes a habit. So instead of just like falling into that emotion, like just letting it take over, you can say deep breath, seven seconds. I call it a seven second breath. Breathe in seven seconds, hold it seven seconds, exhale seven seconds. Every mom needs to know how to do the seven second breath. Hey, mama. We'll get right back to the podcast, but did you know there is an entire online university just for moms? If you're ready to get radical results in your life, just go to mommastery.com that's M O M H M A S T E R-Y dot com. Make sure you check it out and take your free quiz again. That's mommastery.com M O M M A S T-E-R-Y.com now back to the podcast. But when you can do that seven second breath, then you can just say, okay, this is what I'm feeling. Honor what I'm feeling. But I'm not going to let it control me. I'm going to be objective about it. And let's see how we can move through this. Not, not like, how can I get rid of it. You don't want to get rid of your emotion. You want to move through it and let it do its work. And the third thing, and this is biblical, y', all, and that third thing is to take authority. And the Bible, it says to take every thought captive. Now think about it. Your emotions are there to show you what your brain is thinking, right? So if you can take every thought captive, you're not just subject to your emotions. What you're doing is you're saying, no, my emotions are subject to me. They're my emotions. I take authority over it. They're my thoughts. I take authority over it. And this is the way I think about it. And you might think I'm kind of weird, but I love giving practical solutions to big problems because moms like me and you, sometimes we got to deal with some big stuff. Okay, so here's my practical solution. Because in the Bible says, take every thought captive. Yeah, but how? Like, I want to know how to do that. So this is what I like to think of Harry Potter, okay? If you've seen Harry Potter in the very. I think it was Harry Potter 7, all you Harry Potter fans like, like, give me shout out here. But In Harry Potter 7, what they did was they were. They. Through magic, they had their wand, and you were able to conjure a thought out of your head and you could, like, see the thought. It was like a wisp of smoke that you could pull out of your head and capture it. So that's how I like to think about it, is that you actually, like, when it says, take every thought captive, you hold that thought and then you pull it out, because this is. You've got to take it captive. When I think about taking captive, like, you don't take little puppies captive. Little puppies are awesome. You don't take little puppies captive. You take lions captive. You take panthers captive. You take, like, killer sharks captive, captive, you know? So you take something dangerous and you take it captive. You seize it, you pull it out and you judge. Okay? This steps back into being objective. Am I going to hold you? Am I going to keep you? They're my thoughts. They're my emotions. I can choose to keep it. I can choose to toss it. And you have to be really good at being able to take it captive. Just like pulling out a wisp of smoke and saying, you know what? You're not serving me right now. Depression, fear, worry. You're not serving me. You're not empowering me. You're not making my life or my kids life better. So I'm letting you go. God's enough to take your emotions, girl. God is enough to handle it. Now the fourth one, and I promise you, I use this every single day. Not even joking. This, number four. I use it every single day, and this is it. Remember, okay? This is number four. Remember, you are not your emotions. As a matter of fact, I want you to say that out loud. I don't care where you are. I don't care if you're watching this, like, and you're in the library with your kids. Say it out loud. I am not my emotions. I am not my emotions. I want you to know this. If no one has told you this today. You are amazing. You are brilliant. You're an incredible gift to this world. God has a purpose over your life. God takes joy in you. He rejoices in you. He takes pleasure in you. You are a gift to this world. You are freaking amazing, mama. So understand, you are not your emotions. Your emotions are a part of you. They do not identify you. So it's okay if we go through spells, and it's okay if we go through highs and lows, but it's not okay to let Those emotions identify you or to you construct your identity through your emotions. You are who you are, and that is the head and not the tail, the top and not the bottom. You are a gift to this world. Don't ever forget that. Your emotions are merely there to show us how we're moving through life and to help us make better decisions about where we're going. So I hope that helps you today. Those are four ways to get control over your emotions so they're not taking control over you. You got this. And what I want you to do is, is please share this. If there's a mom you know who is dealing with a little emotional upheaval and hello, like what mom isn't, would you share this? Because this may just be the message that she needs to hear today.
