The 7 Shifts Every Mom Must Make - Shallow to Deep
30 Aug 2019 · 13 min
In this episode of The Mom Show, host Hannah Keeley introduces the fifth of her "seven critical shifts" for mothers, which is moving from a shallow, reactive mode of living to a deep, intentional mindset. She opens with a testimonial from Rachel Popps, a "master mom" who credits Mom Mastery University with enabling her to juggle multiple guests, exercise, and household tasks without losing her sanity. Keeley explains why moms tend to stay shallow: the brain undergoes a reduction in gray matter after childbirth, an evolutionary adaptation that heightens intuition and protective instincts but also drives constant emergency‑mode multitasking. She describes how this shallow mode keeps mothers focused on surface‑level tasks (bills, meals, cleaning) and prevents deep, strategic thinking. The solution she proposes is a daily self‑coaching practice—30‑minute morning and evening thought‑downloads where moms objectively examine their beliefs, deconstruct limiting thoughts, and intentionally "cast their cares" in line with a faith‑based perspective. Keeley outlines how this deep work fuels empowerment, energy, and productivity, and she promotes Mom Mastery University’s September deep‑dive series on self‑coaching for the Mom Brain, offering enrollment incentives and a physical booklet. The episode concludes with a call to action for a free Mom Show Starter Kit (time‑management program, meditation, manifesto) via thatmomshow.com or a text to 345345.

The seven critical shifts that every mom needs to make. It's a series we're working on and I want to share with you what that critical shift number five is. It's going to blow your mind in today's episode. Here's the big question. How are these average everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick? We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley and I'm going to spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show. All right? We've been talking about the seven critical shifts, right? Those shifts that every mom needs to make if she's going to live the life that God has designed for her. To live that life of success in abundance and freedom and joy. That can be your life. It should be your life. So let's figure out what shift we need to make in order for you to get it. Now, shift number five is moving from shallow to deep. And I'm going to share how to do that. But first, I want to share a testimony that came in from one of our master moms, Rachel Popps. Okay? She wrote in, I have five house guests this week and have babysat my friend's son for two days this week and have been able to visit with everyone, make homemade meals for 12 plus people. Go do fun stuff, keep up the exercising. I ran two and a half miles tonight and still maintain, still in all caps, still maintained a house cleaning without losing my mind. This would have never happened prior to Mom Master University. I am so grateful for learning how to have and maintain balance in my life. Y' all just, y' all like, that's what it's all about. Because this is the kind of stuff that normally throws us then this is why I want to share Rachel's testimony today. Because it's these little things and it's not so little, but accumulation of them. That's what throws us into a tizzy. Now, if you don't know Rachel's one of our master moms inside Mom Mastery University. It's the only online university designed for moms to work with the way they think and, and the way they operate their lives. You can plug in, get your first 12 week master track, get your certification, amazing program. So Rachel's one of our master moms and she has had, she said before mom Master University, that would have never happened. So what I want to share with you is shallow. We have a tendency as moms and I'm going to explain why? And I'm going to explain why scientifically. Why we have a tendency to stay shallow. What I mean by that is we major in the minors because moms have a tendency to wake up and immediately go into emergency mode. I don't know if you've ever done that, but it's like where you wake up and you just start putting out fires immediately. Right. Like left and right. Like all of a sudden we're just meeting needs and we're not having any real intention behind what we're doing because we're not going deep. We stay shallow. Now, here's the reason I'm going to tell you just a quick snippet about your brain. If you're a mom, is when you have a baby, there is actual a shrinking of the gray matter in your brain. And you're like, what? Why would God make me stupider? Like, it seems like I need to be smarter after I have a kid. Why would he make my gray matter in my brain shrink? Okay, this is actually a evolutionary thing that God designed. I'm going to tell you the good and bad bad. You may already realize that sometimes mom brain strikes and you drive up with your coffee on the roof of the car. Or you are in a room and you're like, why did I. Why did I walk in here again? Or one of your kids is talking to you and you're just like, huh, huh? You have no idea what they're saying. All of these things. Mom brain. Because so many things are bombarding our lives. So there's a shrinking of the gray matter so that we're able to focus on what really matters. We're able to be more sensitive and intuitive about our surroundings. When we're a mom, for example, it's kind of like a Spidey sense where, you know, I'm talking about with Spidey sense, like Spider man, he can, like, sit sense danger. Moms have this keen ability to. It's like we develop a new sense on sensing danger. We know something's wrong with our kid. Like, they're not telling us, but we know something's wrong. Or we're the first ones, like, grab our toddler before they run out in front of a car. Or we're the one that's like seeing the knives and scissors and push them away from the edge. This kind of ability that we have is actually a way that our brain has evolved. After we had kids, we feel like we're more scatterbrained. We feel like we have a little bit of ADD there. But what actually happens is we're able to be more intuitive and sensitive about our environment because now we're a protector, you know, and moms are like, if I'm. If I'm talking to you and you're anything like me, like, you are a mama bear. Like, you can do whatever you want to me. You mess with one of my kids, you are in truth, rubble. So we have that instinct in us. So because of that, we have a tendency to. Because we're dealing with so many variables coming at us at all times as moms. I mean, you know that there's like, someone at the door and a text comes in and a kid needs you, and then another kid's flushing, you know, an entire roll of toilet paper down the toilet. And so all these things coming at you. Because of that, we have a tendency to stay very shallow. We don't go deep. As a matter of fact, when we're in a conversation with someone, tell me if this is happening. You're like, leave a comment. And they have a tendency to go deep. We're like, I don't have time for this. Like, I've got, like, I'm watching my kid out of the corner of my eye here. I've got to run to the grocery store because people are about to come over to the house. I got to do this. So we're thinking about all the things that are going on in the periphery. We can't go deep in the present. Does that make sense? Okay. All right. You're tracking. I feel like you're tracking well, because of this, we tend to live our lives on a daily, like, on the surface level. All right? We are making sure the bills are paid. We're making sure the house is maintained. We're making sure our, you know, everything's going well at the workplace. We're making, you know, all of these things. People are fed, people are clean, people are sleeping. Like, they're. Whatever it is. Hey, mama. We'll get right back to the podcast, but did you know there is an entire online university just for moms? If you're ready to get radical results in your life, just go to mommastery.com that's M O M M A S T E R Y. Make sure you check it out and take your free quiz again. That's mommastery.com m o m m a s t r y dot com. Now back to the podcast. Everything is being done. We're. We're making sure, like, all the bases are covered, right? But because we're making sure all the bases are covered, we're never focusing deep and we never get to hit the home run. Oh, I just did like a sports analogy and I know nothing about sports, so I know a little bit about sports. Not that much though, but so we're just making sure everything's covered and that's okay. That's how we've evolved as moms and that's how we have to survive as moms. But what I want to challenge you today is to consciously and you have to do this really, like you have to make the intention to do this, you have to take the time to do it is you have to make that shift from shallow to deep. And here's how I'm doing it because I like to make things very practical for you. So every single morning I get up early and I have done this ever since like the kids were little. And I used to have to get up like super early in order to have this time. But I get up early and I make sure I have at least like 30 minutes of self coaching where I sit and I can actually do like a three thought download. And I'm actually going to be going through this all September Inside Mom Master University, how I do this, doing an entire thought download and taking these strategies and objectively looking at my thoughts, seeing where my belief system needs to be tweaked a bit, what kind of thoughts I need to hold, and then I'm able to go out and be more intentional with the day and get more stuff done. Now it's just self coaching. I do that in the morning and at night. At night or all the things that happen during the day, I do another thought download, I dump it all out because Jesus said like, cast your cares upon me because I care for you, right? So we have to intentionally cast our cares. We can't take this to bed, we can't carry it around during the day. We can't carry. We're not designed, our brain is not designed to carry stress and worry. So we have to do the self coaching so we can dump out the thoughts, be able to analyze them, be able to deconstruct them, and then be able to get strategies around our thinking and around our belief patterns so that we can be more empowered, more energized, more excited and therefore as a result get more done during the day. And it's productive work. It's good work. It's not like, oh, I gotta wash all the laundry, I gotta do the laundry, I gotta fold it, whatever, it's not drudgery. It becomes an extension of a powerful mindset. Huge shift. But this is the kind of mind shift that actually needs to be so intentional. You need to set a time to do it every day. Now, if you're confused at all about how to make the shift from shallow to deep, doing from shallow to doing the deep work, and it's almost not a shift. It's almost like we need to add in the deep because we still have to do all the periphery work, right? We still have to make sure the bases are covered, but we have to be able to spend time going deep so we get better at managing everything else. Now, this is new to you. The whole self coaching thing is like, what are you talking about? Like, how do you do the thought work? It is the number one skill you need to know in life, I promise you. Inside Mom Mastery University, all throughout September, we're doing an entire deep dive series into self coaching for the Mom Brain. Now, I'd love to invite you to go through that with us.
