The 7 Shifts Every Mom Must Make - Consumer to Creator
31 Aug 2019 · 15 min
In this solo podcast episode, Hannah Keeley explains the sixth of seven essential "shifts" mothers should make: moving from being a media consumer to a creator. She begins by highlighting how modern life, especially for moms, is saturated with media—citing statistics like eight hours of TV per day and phones being on us for 22 hours a day. She frames this constant consumption as a response to decision‑fatigue and the brain’s need for a pause, but warns that mindless scrolling becomes a counter‑productive habit. Keeley argues that every mom possesses God‑given creativity and can repurpose the same devices that enable consumption into tools for creation—whether that means recording a short video, writing a note, or simply using the phone to capture a new idea. She stresses the importance of bringing awareness to phone use, intentionally choosing creative actions, and saying "no" to low‑value commitments so that high‑value creative pursuits can flourish. The episode also promotes Mom Mastery University’s September deep‑dive on self‑coaching for the "mom brain," offers a free mailed booklet for early enrollees, and advertises a free Mom Show Starter Kit (including a time‑management program, a faith‑based meditation, and a printable manifesto) available via thatmomshow.com or by texting “KIT” to 345345. Throughout, Keeley blends conversational coaching with faith‑forward encouragement, urging listeners to embrace intentional pauses, harness their creativity, and actively design their dream lives.

Hey, mama. There are seven critical shifts every mom must make. That's what we're talking about this week. And I want to share with you today what number six is. You're gonna love this. And I'm gonna share all about number six in today's episode. Here's the big question. How are these average, everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick. Check this out. We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley, and I'm going to spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show. Okay, friend, I don't know where you are and I don't know what you're doing, but I am outside on my back porch enjoying this exquisite day. This is amazing. It's lovely. Life is good. And I'm telling you, if you're facing some issues where life isn't too good, stick with me, okay? Because God wants you to have an amazing, awesome, elegant, beautiful life. And I can help you do that, okay? So let's link arms. Let's create the life that God intended for you to live. And that's exactly what we're talking about when we talk about these seven critical shifts every mom needs to make. We've been sharing all about them this week. Been talking about those subtle shifts that lead to amazing results. And I've got a big one for you today. It's number six, that shift going from consumer to creator. All right, let's talk just a second about the world that we live in. Because we live in a world today, today where more media is consumed than ever before. It used to be. You remember the stats a long time ago. Long time meaning, like maybe four years. But years ago, it was like the amount of television a person watches a day, like eight hours of television. People are like, what? That's crazy. Do you know the average person has their phone on them at least 22 hours a day? Yeah. Yeah. Always accessible. It's like there. It's like it's attached to them constantly. You may be one of those people, but your phone is always with you. Now, that's not necessarily bad thing. I'm gonna explain why that may not be a bad thing, but the amount of media we are consuming has never been higher. We are constantly. I don't know if you've ever, like, just gone out to eat and, like, looked around at every person whose head was down and they're looking at their hands, looking at the phone in their hands. I remember Hearing someone talk about how scientists, like years and years and years from now are going to say what happened in that transition into like the, the, the 2000s. Something happened because all of a sudden the sp spines of everyone started curving downward, the head started curving downward. Because all of a sudden people just go around like they walk around, they sit everything, head down, looking at your phone. Right. This is very common. Now. This is what I want to talk with you about today. It's going from consumer to creator. What? My hair is doing weird things. So if you're watching the video, please. Excuse me. If you're listening to the audio, please. I'm sorry. Just had to straighten really weird hair there. Okay, so let's talk about consuming media. We live in a time, like I said, where we've never consumed more media. And that is particularly true for moms. Although we live lives that are so full. I don't like to say busy. I believe busy is a four letter word that we need to strike from our vocabulary. I think our lives are so full. We're doing so many things. We have so many multiple variables coming at us. That's why we're called MVPs. Multiple variable, professional. And sometimes we use our phone as an escape, which is totally understandable because of the rapid way that our brain fires as a mom. Sometimes it needs a pause. Now we can tell me what mom can rationalize. Just sitting and thinking or meditating or just like going up by yourself just to be calm. A lot of times there's a part of our mind that immediately retaliates against this because it tells us if you were a good mom, you'd be hustling. You'd be grinding, right? You'd be working so hard. There's something to be said for hustling. Grinding in the appropriate time. But when your brain is exhausted from all the decision is called decision fatigue. Your brain is constantly making decisions as a mom from morning to night. And sometimes your brain is like, whoa, can we just stop for a second? Soon someone's got to push the pause button. And so as a response, we'll get our phone and we'll look at it sometimes like it's not even a conscious thing. Just grab our phone and we'll look at it and we'll start to just scroll, scroll, scroll. Click on something that strikes our fancy. Scroll some more, click on another thing, watch a video. The thing is, I don't want you to get down on yourself about this because it's just a reaction of your brain. Because if you just sat and did nothing. You would tell yourself this story about, hey, you're being lazy. Am I right? Like almost every mom who listens to this can say, oh my gosh, yes. If I just stopped and said, hey, I'm going to go center myself, I'm going to go get some energy, I'm going to go meditate for about five minutes. I'm going to go get my focus right. I'm going to go do a thought download and just get some clarity. We'd be like, I don't have the time to do that and I would be a bad mom if I took time away from my kids and the bills and the housework and the errands and everything else to go do that. Right? We have the story that we tell ourselves that it's a waste and we don't have time, but that doesn't help alleviate our brains craving for a little bit of downtime. Right? So what do we do instead? We just absent mindedly go to our phones and we start consuming. Hey mama. We'll get right back to the podcast, but did you know there is an entire online university just for moms? If you're ready to get radical results in your life, just go to mommastery.com that's M-O-M-M-A-S-T-E-R-Y.com. make sure you check it out and take your free quiz again. That's mommastery.com M O M M A S T-E-R-Y.com now back to the podcast. So is this making sense to you? It's a natural thing. Our brain needs to take a quick pause. But because we can't justify it with the story story that we tell ourselves, we'll just go to our phone and just start scrolling because hey, it looks like we're being kind of productive, but really it's counterproductive. We're not doing the thing we should do which is make our pause intentional. We're doing the thing that we rationalize as okay and valid and go to our phone and start consuming media. Now, that being said, all right, let's figure out how do we make this shift and why do we need to make this shift? Here's the deal. The majority of people in the world are consumers. There's a small percentage that are creators. Now I believe that you're listening to this because you have the creativity of God inside of you. And some people are like, hannah, I am not creative. That is a lie, baby girl. That is a Lie. Because you are made in the spirit of our Creator. You're made in his image. Therefore, you do have the creativity of God within you. He has placed you here at this time, at this place, on this planet, with a full anointing to serve others in some way. I don't know what it is. I don't know if it's leading a class. I don't know if it's just. Maybe it's a phase of wiping noses and wiping butts, or maybe it's a phase where God is pushing upon you to support a ministry or start a. Start a podcast or change it, change your career. He has got a way for you to be instrumental in his kingdom. Now what the enemy will use is media to grab our attention so that we won't create, we won't operate in the spirit of the Creator, and we will just be consuming, mindlessly consuming, because it takes up our time. And actually it doesn't help our brain at all. It's not really helping our brain to put on pause because we're still consuming stuff. We're not making intentional effort to get our focus back and get clarity and get direction. When you can make this subtle shift from consumer to creator, and you've got to be so intentional about this, you've got to realize when you're going to your phone, like, just, just if you can bring it up to your awareness. Because we, you don't. We don't even like, consume with any basic awareness. We just kind of like, it's a habit. Sit down, look at your phone, stand up, look at your phone, whatever, like, no one to talk to. Pull out your phone. That's just how we get. So if you could just bring this motion of looking at your phone or turning on the TV or whatever it is up to your awareness, what that will do is it will at least help you to take action. Say, maybe this is not the wisest choice. Maybe I can sit, maybe I can calm my mind, get some clarity, get some direction from God about how to create. Now, remember I said earlier in here that keeping your phone on you is not necessarily a bad thing. People are like, oh my gosh, you always have your phone on you. Well, what if you're always creating? Think about it. What if, when you get like these great ideas that God gives you, what if you immediately like what I'm doing right now? Create a podcast, create a short video, post something encouraging to somebody else, or write an email to somebody. What if it is an outlet for creativity instead of an instrument of consummation? Oh, yeah, that just came out of my mouth. What if you were able to use your phone as an outlet of creativity? Now, this is also. It's not always like serving others. Maybe it's serving yourself in this period of your life, in this chapter of your life. Because I know a lot of moms, you're thinking, hannah, I can't take on another thing. I totally get that. And I would never be someone to say, hey, in addition to, like raising your four kids, could you also leave a Sunday school class? And could you also have socials at your house all the time? And could you also take up this fundraising campaign last. I would be the last person world to say that. What I would say is like, you need to say no to these things so you can say yes to the most important things, but you always have a spirit of creativity in you. How can you use that spirit of creativity to create your dream life? Whoa. Yes. You should be having fun right now creating your dream life. As a matter of fact, that is one of the proclamations I tell myself every single day. I have fun creating my dream life. That's where the spirit of creativity, instead of consuming everyone else's dream life, maybe you can make the subtle switch and say, what can I do today to create my dream life? I'm just saying the subtle shift can make a world of difference. Quit being a consumer, start being a creator. And if you're not like, creating content for something, create your dream life every day. What can you do? What can you do to move to that next level? Because I believe if you're listening to this, if your heart is beating, if breath is going in and out of your lungs, then God has a next level for you to get to, and he's got a way for you to get to it.
