The 7 Shifts Every Mom Must Make - Excuse to Reason
28 Aug 2019 · 15 min
In this solo podcast episode, Hannah Keeley presents the third of her "seven critical shifts" that she argues every mother must adopt to achieve freedom, abundance, and radical results across health, finances, family, and home. The shift is moving from using "excuses" to framing situations as "reasons". Keeley illustrates the concept with a testimonial from Allison Thompson, a Mom Mastery University graduate, and shares personal anecdotes about how she transformed her own life by reframing excuses (e.g., lack of time, money, energy) into motivating reasons. She explains the psychological effect of excuses as a "wet blanket" that extinguishes fire, versus reasons as "gasoline" that fuels action. Concrete examples cover building a business, exercising, managing money, improving marriage, and decluttering the home. Throughout, Keeley promotes Mom Mastery University – an online university for moms – and a September series on "Self Coaching for the Mom Brain". She concludes with a call‑to‑action to join the university, obtain a free "Mom Show Starter Kit" (including a time‑management program, meditation, and manifesto), and visit thatmomshow.com or text "KIT" to 345345.

All right, these seven critical shifts that every mom needs to make. I'm going to share with you what critical shift number three is in today's show. Here's the big question. How are these average everyday moms getting radical results in their lives? How are they able to transform their health, money, families, homes, and have fun doing it? The trick? We're not average. I'm Hannah Keeley and I'm going to spill our secrets and answer your questions right now in that mom show. All right, I've been talking about the seven critical shifts that every mom needs to make if she wants to live a life that is successful, a life of freedom, a life of abundance. It doesn't just happen. Like, it doesn't just like, you know, I roll the dice and this is what I got. In life, you have to take certain steps, and it's like a formula. You take the right steps, you're going to get the right results. So what are those critical shifts that a mom needs to make? Because a mom operates really different from other people. Like we have. We live totally different lives. Our brain even operates in a different way. So we need to know what works for us. Now, I'm going to share with you that critical shift number three today, and that's moving from except excuse to reason. But before I do that, I want to share with you a testimony that came in from one of our master moms Inside Mom Mastery University. She says, this is Allison Thompson. She said, I got up at 6am, took a shower, dropped my son off at my cousin's half an hour away and was still 10 minutes early for work after not getting home till 11:45 last night. And I didn't feel super tired. I also booked a flight and I'm going with my son to help my sister out. It would have been total anxiety and I wouldn't do it before. I would have made excuses why. And she uses quotation marks. I can't afford to go. I have too many things going on. But I made it happen. Now, I wanted to share her testimony because I think that has a lot to do with moving from excuse to reason, making that shift. Now, if you didn't know, we have Mom Mastery University. It's the only online university for moms where you can get in, get plugged into your first semester, get your certification, and grow your life in all areas. So Alison is one of our master moms inside Mom Master University. And I want to share her testimony because she even used those quotation marks like, I can't afford to go I have too many things going on. The reason she talked about that is before she got inside Mom Master University, she used excuses to navigate the course of her life. Now, a lot of us do that. And here's the deal. We do it by default. We do it unconsciously. It just becomes a way of life. We start to unconsciously use excuses to guide our behavior. Now what I want to propose to you today in our show is to make that subtle shift. And it doesn't really change anything initially. What it does, it changes your mindset so that you can get huge shifts, changes later. And I'm going to lay this out how to actually apply this in your life. But going from excuse because think about all the reasons you don't do what you know you should do, right? There's always some excuse. If we could shift a little bit and turn that same situation from being an excuse to being a reason, then we can start creating a completely different life. It's more energizing, it's more exciting, it's more positive. We get better results. I'm going to give you an example. Back before, I had my own transformation. Like, I was broke, I was overweight, out of shape, my house was cluttered, like, you name it. And I always use my kids as an excuse, like, well, I can't build a business because have seven kids and they take all of my time, right? And anyone who would look at my life would say, yeah, that's legitimate excuse. Kind of like, I'm not saying that it's not a legitimate excuse. You probably have a lot of legitimate excuses. And that's fine. I'm just making a proposition. What if you could shift it a little bit? So when I would say I can't build a business because I have so many kids and they require so much of my time and energy, what if I use that same situation and I moved it from excuse to reason? Same situation. Just a shift in mindset. So instead of saying, I can't build a business because my kids, what if I turned it into a reason and I said I must build my business because of my kids same situation. But it went from being excuse not to build a business to being an excuse to build a business because it's like, I don't want to. I want to give my kids an example of what is possible. I want to create more wealth to, to for my family for generations that come after me. I want to, you know, secure resources that I wouldn't normally have. Now I was able to do that because I made that shift as long as I used an excuse, I would never be able to build a business ever. But when I turned it into my reason, it gave me fire, right? The excuses are like a wet blanket. Because when you go with an excuse, it's like taking your energy to make a life change and putting a wet blanket on it. Like, you know, I could change my finances, but I don't know anything about money. I don't know the right people. I'm too busy to think about it. I don't make enough. So those are wet blankets. It completely puts our fire out and we're like, I guess I'll sink back to what life as usual is supposed to be like. But when we turn it from excuse to reason, it's like pouring gasoline on the fire. So you know what? I can't build my money because I don't know anything about money. Wet blanket must learn about money in order to build my wealth. That is like, that's like fire, right? That's like putting gasoline on the fire. Like, I must build my wealth. Like, like, what do I have to do to make this happen? I need to learn about money. I need to get my skill. I need to increase my knowledge. I need to get wisdom. So when we go with the excuse puts the fire out, we don't make any. Make no improvement, we make no progress. When we shift to reason, we light it on fire, man. We put the gasoline on it and it pushes us forward. So, for example, take exercise. I'm too tired to exercise. Okay, like every mom's story ever, right? Because we do so much. So take like, I'm too tired to exercise, wet blanket. All of a sudden we feel more tired and we're completely, like, uninspired to do anything about it. But if you've made the shift from excuse to reason, I must exercise so that I can increase my energy level. Like, I don't want to be this tired, so I must exercise to get out of it. That's the gasoline. We're like, no, I'm not going to put up with this anymore. I'm going to use this same situation not as an excuse to go back, but as a reason to move forward. That sets it on fire. Hey, mama, we'll get right back to the podcast, but did you know there is an entire online university just for moms? If you're ready to get radical results in your life, just go to mommastery.com that's M O M M A S T E R-Y dot com. Make sure you check it out and Take your free quiz again. That's mommastery.com and M O M M A S t e r y.com now back to the podcast. So I want to share with you because I truly believe that is a critical, critical step that every mom needs to make. I've seen women come into Mom Master University and all of a sudden the excuses that they had used their whole life, like, well, my husband won't let me, or I don't have any time or I can't afford it, all of a sudden these excuses like, they're powerless. They, you can't hold on to it anymore because your mind has stretched to a new level. And all of a sudden that excuse like I can't afford to do it becomes, wait a minute, I can't afford not to do it. That was one shift I had to make. I remember investing in my very first life changing program. All right, it was like, I think it was like $2,000. And I remember thinking, I mean, I didn't have any money to do that, you know, like pulling out the credit card. So I was like, I, I can't afford to do this. Like, we're already like so deep in debt. But then I realized, I can't afford not to. I'm going to stay in debt until I get the skills to manage my life better. So instead of saying I can't afford to do it, I whipped out the car, I said, I can't afford not to because I don't want to live like this. I don't want to live in a state where I can't. Where it's like my life depends on what I can afford or not. Wanted to move to a state where I made the decisions for my money and I didn't let money make decisions for me. Now you can use this in every single area. Like you can use it in your marriage. You always have an excuse. Well, he doesn't respect me, he doesn't listen to me. Whatever your excuse is, you can turn that into your reason. Because we have this communication problem always. It's never just one sided. Takes two hands to clap. So because we have this communication problem in our marriage, that is my reason to dive in and focus in this area. To get the skill, to get the wisdom, to get the knowledge and apply it every area of your life. Your money, your health, your marriage, parenting, your home that, you know, the house is too cluttered to live in. No, it's, it's too cluttered not to declutter it. Like, use it, like, oh, man, I just want to escape my house to, you know what, I want to dive into my house and declutter it and organize it. So this is a shift that I truly think if. If you're going to go to the next level, and I don't believe you're listening to this or watching this, if you didn't have that desire in you to level up, like, there's always another level. There's always another version of you that's pulling you forward. I think you feel it inside of you. And you've got to make this shift. Instead of letting life make decisions for you, you start making decisions for life. And that is that subtle shift. It doesn't change the situation. What it does is it changes your mindset about the situation. The so instead of sinking back into life as usual, you get fired up to make a change and create your life the way you desire it. Making that shift from excuse to reason, subtle shift, huge change, I'm telling you. And that is a shift I believe is a critical shift that every mom needs to make. Because as long as we have excuses, we're not going to get results. I always tell my kids, like, you can either have excuses or you can have results, but you cannot have both. You can have excuses or you can have success, but you cannot have both. As long as you're using excuses, it's going to hold you down and keep you subject to life. When you have a reason, you're inspired to take authority, just like God commanded you to take authority over your life. He says he gave us power and authority. He has breathed into us a spirit of creativity to create our lives. So what are you doing today to make that shift from excuse to reason? I would love for you to get plugged in and make that shift for yourself, just to see what happens. It's crazy. When you make that subtle shift, things change. Now, I want to encourage you if you want to do the work, and by the work, I mean that mind work, the thought work, to really change what's happening in your head. Because when you change what's happening in your head, you're going to change what's happening in your life.
