What is the passing score to the PMP exam?

Helena Liu breaks down the PMP exam structure: 200 questions total, 175 scored, four-hour time limit. PMI stopped publishing passing scores after disclosing 61% in 2013, but Liu estimates it still falls between 61% and 68%. She recommends aiming for 70% on practice tests, ideally 80% or higher, to pass safely on your first try.

In this video, we are going to answer the question, what is the passing score to the PMP exam? Now before we dive into it, let's just talk about some key exam information that's going to be relevant later on. So first of all, there is 200 questions on the PMP exam. 175 of these questions are marked and 25 of these questions are unmarked. However, you won't know which questions are unmarked, so you have to answer every single question as if it is marked. The reason that PMI, or the Project Management Institute, do this is because they can use the 25 unmarked questions as a test, and if they do score in the range where they wanted to score, then they can release these questions in the future as marked questions. So this is the way that PMI tests questions before they release them into the actual exam bank. Now you have 4 hours to complete the exam. You can take as many or as little breaks as you want. Anytime you take a break, this will count towards your exam Now that we got the basic information out of the way, let's talk about what the passing score to the PMP exam is. So the short answer unfortunately is that no one knows because PMI no longer releases the passing score to the PMP exam. However, here is what we do know. So back in 2013, so this was the last time that PMI released a passing score to this exam, and it used to be 61%. 61%. And a couple of years prior to 2013, the passing score used to be 68%. Now because the PMP exam did not get significantly easier or harder since 2013, and the number of people who have been passing the exam has relatively stayed stable, so it's relatively the same number of people or percentage of people who are still passing this exam, because of these 2 things, we think that the passing score will still have to be within the 61 to 68% range. And we deduct that because the exam hasn't gotten harder or easier, and the number or percentage of people who are passing is still relatively the same. So what this means for you is that on your practice exams, you should be aiming for a minimum of 70%. 80% or higher is probably preferable because it gives you a higher margin for errors, but you definitely, on your practice exams, when you're going into your PMP, you definitely want to do practice exams and score 70% or higher on your first try. So it doesn't count if you take the exam once, look at all the answers, and take it again and get over 70%. So you definitely want to get over 70% on practice exams on your first try.
