I Took a Bedroom DJ to Ibiza and THIS Happened

YouTube vlog documenting James Hype bringing the winner of his Instagram DJ competition (Slavko) to Ibiza for a seven-day, all-expenses-paid mentorship trip. The episode follows their arrival, a sweaty pop-up DJ set in a gym, backstage soundchecks at High, meeting the club team, and playing/previewing tracks (including a Waterfalls remix and an original by Slavko). The video also features James opening at Universe for David Guetta and includes candid conversations about music production, remixing, and building a DJ career.
Questions this video answers
More than 6,000 people.
Seven days (all expenses paid).
David Guetta.
Two months ago, I posted this competition on Instagram. I wanted to find the next up and coming DJ who was putting in the work, who really deserved a trip to Ibiza for seven days with all expenses paid. Today I'm going to announce to you who has won and they are going to be joining us right here in Ibiza and hopefully we can change their lives forever. So I had more than 6,000 people enter this competition. So as you can imagine, choosing the winner was really difficult. I was looking for somebody who was putting in the work, making music, making remixes, putting out DJ sets online, killing it with the content and overall, someone who I thought could make it. This is Slavko. He came from Ukraine to London to chase his dream of being a dj. And tomorrow he's going to be joining us right here in Ibiza. We're going to take him to high. I'm going to introduce him to the whole team. In fact, I'm going to introduce him to as many important people as I possibly can. We're going to show him the whole venue, show him the sound check, show him how everything works and hopefully give him some advice that he can take with him forever after that. I've paid for him to spend the next seven days in Ibiza to see what opportunities he can figure out by himself. So today I'm playing at Universe. It's actually really sick. David Guetta, yeah, like the biggest DJ in the whole fucking world, has asked me to be the opener for his show at Universe tonight. Now, I have played at Universe before, but different night, different show. So what's, what's it going to be like opening for David Guetta? I don't know, but I'm really excited. I get to play some different music and I just hope that I've kind of got the right idea of what to play because you never really know these things. But yeah, Universe, let's do this. Get a glory out of it. So we are going right now to Universe. This is really exciting. I've been asked to open for David Guetta. It's a bit of a challenge because the guy's got more hit records than literally any DJ in the world. That's not gonna hang there, is it? Opening for De. It's kind of cool because when you play an opening set, you don't have to, like, smash out the banger. So I get to play a couple of tunes I've never played before. Some stuff I've been working on. I'll bring my laptop in the car and I'll run you through some of the tracks I want to play. So I'm going to open with this tune. I haven't actually played this for like a month because I feel like it's a little bit softer. But I think the person who's on me before is playing quite soft. Sick tune. And then I got this tune that I made literally this week I gotta drop for the first time. I don't even think it's like finished finished. It just. I wanna. I wanna feel it. And then that's kind of faster than I want to take it back down because I don't want to be that opener who leaves David guetta at like 140B. So how am I taking it back down? Let's see. I got this one today. This is cool. It's still kind of hard, but it's like 128bpm, so a little bit more housing. Yeah, it's totally different set tonight. I'm looking forward to it. What's up, Gabby? How are you? Nice to see you. I'm good, thank you. I'm all right, thank you. Would you be mine? Test. So today I'm doing a DJ set for free in a gym. Have a look around. This is going to be fun. I don't know how many people are going to show up, but I put it on my Instagram story. So if you're in Ibiza, come to this DJ set. So Russ is doing sound check right now. I'm gonna do some pull up. I'm instantly sweating. It's so humid. It's horrible. Other is air conditioning. It's going to be well sweaty in here. It's been a few hours now. All the cameras are set up. Dexa sub's playing now.
Sold out.
It's what? It's sold out. We can't let any more people out. Also, the winner of the Ibiza competition is in there right now. I'll let James introduce him to you. I'm tired, so I missed it all. Rashawn style is up.
All right.
So we just pulled up outside the gym. I'm playing in 11 minutes, but I'm trying to avoid going in there because it's so hot and sweaty in there. When we went for sounds like it was hot, but now there's like hundreds of people in there, so I can't even imagine what it's going to be like. I think it's going to look sick, though, as soon as they open the doors. Rash sent me a video and. Yeah, but I'm guessing it's busier.
Than that now.
It's a lot busier. Yeah. So, yeah, pretty crazy doing a DJ set in a gym. So, yeah. Thank you to the guys who own the gym for letting us do this because it's definitely not what they usually have going on in there on a Monday afternoon. All right, we are pulling in now. Let's do it. Oh, it's hot. It really good. I'm going to pass out. Thank you. Thank you, bro. Thank you. See you at high tonight. Yeah. Thank you, bro. What you say? Oh, thanks, man. Yeah, I'm all right. I thought I was going to pass on. Thank you so much. You later. Thank you, guys. Cap.
No, that's what they set it to.
To be.22 degrees in here.
It's definitely not 22 degrees in here at 42 Spanish Celsius.
So we just came from the gym. That was wild. I don't know how many people were there, but it was pretty busy. That was the hottest place I've ever DJ'd in. And I must have sweated like 10 liters. Like, not even exaggerating. I should have weighed myself before and after. That would have been great. Anyway, I'm trying to rehydrate. I gotta change your clothes. I actually think I felt like I was gonna pass out after the set, so I wanted to take photos with people, but I had to go and sit on the floor for two minutes because, like, all the blood went from my face. And I was like, nah, nah. So I sat down for two minutes. I was like, okay, I feel alright again. Now back up. Took photos with everyone, and now we are at high for soundcheck. And I want to introduce you to Slavko, who has come because he won the competition that I put on my Instagram. Yes, bro. Good evening, probably.
Here I come.
Here he comes. It's his first time in Ibiza and it's about to be his first time in high, and I want to kind of answer any questions that he has and just show him this amazing place.
Let's go. Here we go. Oh, this is high. This is the piano we were talking about.
How you doing, guys?
Jesus Christ.
What's up, bro? This is the main room.
We're in high at high.
What do you think?
I feel like the vocabulary that I possess is not enough to describe how amazing this place is. Like, especially taking into account that all of this will. Will be lightning and everything. And this is the screen. And the amount of asset fixed here is just outrageous. What can I say? I can say thank you, James.
What's up, Joe. What's up? H, bro? Yeah. Joe, this is Slavko.
Nice to meet you.
Well done.
I have my own.
It's so insincere.
It's called the Theater. This one?
Yeah.
Which one do you like more? The one. The one that you're playing. Well, the main one.
I'd like to be able to play in both. That's my honest answer.
Simultaneously or main one? Done.
The club, maybe. Maybe I'd like to play here 2 till 4 and then 4 till 6. That'll be fun.
Toilet set at some point.
That'd be sick. Don't know. I don't know if I'd be up for it. Maybe I'll.
I do agree.
I could do it on the closing party. I'm sure there's already a lineup though, isn't there? Yeah.
Even like. It's so wild. Yeah.
Bring it on.
Come your SBS out.
It's been a while, like missed the drop.
Guess what?
What?
I brought my USB too high. That's why you should always bring your usb.
Try to play a tune at soundtrack.
That looks good. Well, I have a remix here.
So your remix of Waterfalls is on the USB analyze. All right, we'll listen to it with.
Few points and radio wave and MP3.
I mean, we'll listen to it then.
That's the way.
Yeah.
May I please play you one more tune after that one? The one that. It was my first release. It came out in. In May. That's my favorite song, basically that I've made. And I really want you to listen to it and tell me your opinion, what you think about it.
Yeah. Cool. See the club room? Have a look. Let's do it now.
Yes. Let's go.
Okay. Okay.
You give me a feeling.
Oh, sick.
That looks sick. That has a vibe to it. But.
Still love this room. It sounds incredible here. Does it make you want to do it again at the last night then? Yeah. It's not. It's not for me to do though, is it? What do you mean? Oh, Hannah Lang plays in here. Can't just be like, move over, I want to play it doesn't work like that.
Is it not working tonight? Yeah, it will be open as well.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, this room's open, but yeah, they. Obviously I'm not on soundtrack there yet. Oh, here he is. He was just asking. Is it not open? Okay.
I think so. What is. What is that? Where are we? Look at this.
Have you ever seen a slide in a nightclub?
Okay.
So do you DJ in the UK?
Yeah. So basically started DJing seven years ago.
Yeah.
I'm from Ukraine.
Yeah.
So I was doing some shows in Kyiv. And then you probably know that the war has happened. So.
You'Re pro. I'm in.
And the war. And unfortunately the war has started. And I moved to the uk, moved to London. And at this point, I was already, like watching your sets and I was analyzing them because at some point I realized that I'm doing shit. Like, I'm not doing any good for some reason, people are connecting with you whenever you form. The people are. They get the energy and they go crazy. They get hype. And I've started analyzing your transitions. Yeah, I've started repeating them.
Yeah.
Over and over. The. The milestone for me was your set from. Not Brooklyn mirage. No, Washington, D.C. echo stage.
I love that you were you.
So you put on the story. You say, the best set I've ever made. You quite often say that's your favorite thing.
But you gotta love your own work, though.
You must love your work. That's absolutely true. But I think I still have it on my phone, saved really, as an MP3 in files. And whenever I would be on the tube, I would listen to the set and then I would repeat the transitions. And you're always saying that you will never make it as a DJ if you don't make your own music. So I thought, oh, my God, I found myself in such a beautiful place as London, which is probably the best city in terms of music education.
Yeah, probably.
And so I started looking for music universities, and I found the university called bim, British and Irish Modern Music Institute. I got accepted for music and sound production and I started making remixes. I started making original tunes. And I had this like, sort of writing blog that. Oh, my God, I will never. I always wanted. I'm not gonna lie, I always wanted to make music as you like. I want to make as good music as you do. I wanted my tracks to sound similar to yours. I love Tech House and I wanted them to paint first. I was just. With those transitions, I was doing the same thing. I was just repeating after you.
Yeah.
And that's what you said once again, like, you don't know what to start with. Just.
Just. Just copy something. Yeah, yeah, totally copy something. And then you find. Like when you find that. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
So I started doing that, started uploading some remixes first.
Where.
Which is fine with the transition. With the transitions and. And set planning happened the same thing. Like, I started making my own transitions, doing acapellas on, putting samples on.
Yeah.
Three, four decks. That kind of Stuff. So filming sets. Film a couple of sets in the clubs, but more of them are from, like, some picturesque location. I can show you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Can I? Yeah, I've seen. I've seen your Instagram already. Like, yeah, bro, that's why. That's why you're here. Because we were looking for someone who's, like, putting in work already. You know what I mean? Because there's no point bringing someone who doesn't like, who. Who isn't trying their best, you know? Because, like, everyone wants to be a dj, don't they?
Unfortunately.
But the only ones who are going to make it are the ones who are putting the work in every day, making remixes, going out and filming DJ sets in, like, crazy locations, whatever. Like, whatever their method is of reaching people, you know, and that's. So. I've seen.
I've seen your Instagram right now. My goal is to have a major release label. Major label release. And it's hard. I know it, but I'll keep pushing. Here I am seeing a. Hi. With James. Hi. What the actual health.
Should go play your track in the theater.
I'm extremely nervous. But yeah, let's go. Let's do. Let's play my track.
He's made a remix of Waterfalls and he's got another track and we're gonna play them in the main room of High.
Always bring your USB with you.
Shall we go? Fresco.
Give me waterfalls where we go get in that zone Let it all flow.
And give me waterfalls Stop you there. This is the best Waterfalls rumors I've heard.
And we're not even done the second.
You know what I need baby you know what I need.
Hold tight it's.
About time we gonna unwind Let it all flow away Give me waterfalls where.
We go get a nice zone Let.
It all flow and give me waterfall Sam, I could actually play this at end. The, like, the right type of show for sure.
What.
What's the other track?
It's already released. Yeah, it's an original track by me and. And. And Hymer, my. My colleague and Riley, she's the singer, so.
Morning. I love how it's like tech house with melodic techno.
Yes.
Like, it's quite a unique blend.
That. That's what it is. Pretty much. What you. What you think?
Yeah, Yeah, I think it's really good. Like, I love that it's. It's melodic, but it's still, like, hard hitting.
Well, that's it.
Sick, though. How many remixes have you got on here?
More original stuff?
Yeah, yeah, sick. That's Sick.
So James saved you. If I. I don't know anything, I can make more.
Did you put. You put these all out on SoundCloud?
Yeah. Yeah.
It's only a matter of time until one of them, like, blows up, you know? Yeah, bro, you just keep going.
Okay.
Because that's the thing. Like, I'm sure you've got people downloading these all the time. Yeah, of course. Yeah. But certainly, like, it's only if you keep doing them. Like, I don't know. How often are you doing it?
I know you're thinking about a remix a week. It's very hard to keep up for me with this, but I'm trying to make it like once. Once a. Yeah, yeah.
Because then you. You'll build a name for yourself and then people will be like, oh, it's the new staff guard remix. Like, we gotta check it out. So you'll. The more you do, the more listeners you'll have on each one. And you never know, some big. Some big DJ will play one. All of a sudden everyone's got it.
Thank you.
For example. Yeah, no, the water sports remix is sick.
You don't understand what will happen to me if you play it somewhere and then I see it on, I don't know, your Instagram or if I just.
There's definitely shows I do where, like the original of hs, it's too fast and too heavy. So that. That one's perfect.
That's why I made it 130.
Yeah, it's a good tempo. Yeah, I thought in between, isn't it? No, I think concerningly might just be tired, mate.
No, I'm just worried about his health, that's it.
Right. We haven't got any food in the house either, have we? There. Some ham and barbecue sauce. I need real food. Classic Wallace. Just about as per usual. Oh, I'm gonna put the SD cards in. I'm gonna put the SD slots in because I'm really important. No one cares about me. Oh, there's an SSD missing. Not an ssd. Oh, no. Get the staff, can you? Ben's lost the hard drive. And for once it's not me losing something. Everyone ripping to him in the comments. Well, that is a shock. It's normally it's you. That's why we stood waiting for you again, Wallace.
Well, Ben Brown, they're going there.
Cameras, memory.
Ben's missing one.
No bueno. Classic, man. Honestly. We're gonna get some food, we're gonna meet him back here and. Yeah, sorry, I'm really dead. That set Absolutely took it out of me. See you later.
See you later. And that brings us to the end of the fire.
No, no, it's not here. No, no, don't listen to. I've drunk like six liters of water. I'm still not really pissing a lot. That's too much info. Now we're going to highlight one. What an entrance. Oh, yeah.
Here I come again.
Hello, man.
Jesus Christ. Just been at Medusa. The guys are smashing. But you know who I'm here for. Obviously, I'm here for the. James, let's go.
Look who's there. How you feeling?
I'm guess okay.
Have you been watching Medusa?
I've been watching Medusa. I've been there all the way.
Check this out. He's just shown me that he was at the Fabric London show last winter. Right behind me.
Hit that switch. DJ.
And there was only like 10 people behind me at that show. The stage was tiny.
That was it. I remember James saying that he will never, ever play that intro again.
Do you know, I brought it back because I was doing loads of shows and people are holding up signs saying, dj, hit that switch. So I was like, I've got to bring it back.
Honestly, I feel like that sick of an intro. It's like it can all be used just one time.
Yeah, well, it's different now. Like, I made a track to play it into. So it's not like an intro anymore. It's just like a piece in the set.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There will be James Hype in 20 minutes.
20 minutes.
So that's what I'm here for.
That's the right answer, basically.
Basically, yeah.
Yeah.
James, what you going to be playing tonight? Like maybe some special tunes, maybe something unreleased, whatever.
Are you trying to get me to play the Waterfalls? Rubix?
Yeah. You know what? James actually replied me on WhatsApp. He was saying on the video, send me this. I said, I've sent you this. And James put the that. That emoji. Basically saying, thank you. Okay, not tonight, but maybe some other time.
Tell the truth. It's not on my USB right now.
I know why. It isn't mine.
It for you.
Waiting on my hard drive. All right.
We're like halfway through the show. What do you think?
What do I think? Mate, it's like the best thing that has probably happened to me over the last five years, maybe in my life.
I don't know.
A line for you. Wait, you're in a strike? I. I feel like.
You want to go watch it. I don't want to keep you.
Shall we?
Let's go for it. Let's. The helicopter. Sick.
How is that? DD D Brief. Three words. The thing. How would you sum it up? James? Hype Smashed. Three words.
Words.
As always. That's fine.
Do you reckon you'll ever play here?
Huh?
Do you think you'll ever play here?
Do you know what? I think I will play here, bro.
Your journey is the same as my journey. Do you know what I mean? Obviously it's not, but it is. Like you're making remixes, making content, like all the only differences. You just gotta keep going.
Yeah, yeah.
And then one of the things that you do will be like the lucky thing and then everyone pays attention. You know what I mean?
I know.
That's. That's all it is.
I need my Ferrari.
Yeah, but you got. You have little steps before the Ferrari. Don't worry.
Obviously, obviously. Then I need my first more than friends.
Yeah.
And then I need more.
Yeah, yeah.
About Ferrari. But can I now say, does it bring us to the end of the fire episode of Moving Differently?
Go on, do it.
And that brings us to the end of the fire episode of Moving Differently. And that will be the track.
Follow Slavko on it. Is Instagram the best place?
Sure. Please, please do.
See what he's doing. That will help me and see why he was chosen as the winner as well.
Please do. And I'll see you in London.
Wherever you are.
Come to my shows. Transition, Transition.
