Driving with Lyft vs. Food Delivery | Lyft Co-Founder John Zimmer Tries Both

Lyft co-founder John Zimmer drives for Lyft and delivers food to see what the work is actually like. He makes $11.69 on two deliveries and $7 on a pizza run, while noting drivers in top cities earn $35-$40 per hour. He picks up passengers, handles restaurant orders, and talks to drivers about tips and the post-pandemic hustle.

Hey, I'm John Zimmer, co-founder of Lyft, and we are comparing rideshare driving and delivery driving. I drive with Lyft every year, at least on New Year's. Coming from a hospitality background, I care deeply about the driver community. I want to make sure I do everything I can to understand as much as possible what it's like to drive on Lyft and what their alternatives are. Let's see how it goes. Alright, I see Logan, 4 minutes away. I'm so nervous. Logan? Yeah? How are you? Where you heading? Uh, Oakland Airport. Alright, let's do it. After the vaccine, any celebration? Just going out to dinner is so great. Yeah, the simplest things. It's like learning how to be human again and like talk to each other. I'm still trying to figure that out. Thank you. Okay, thanks so much. Take care. Alright, 5 stars for Logan. We are a family of 4. Can I help you? Yes, please. Thank you so much. I have two daughters myself. Do you have a daughter and a son? Yep, exactly. Of course it's an Uber driver blocking me. How old are the kids? Layla is 6 and Logan is 1 and a half. Logan again? The last passenger was Logan. I've been trying to get some distance with Logan for a while. It's been hard. All right. Going to pick up not a passenger, but to pick up some Chinese food. Let's see how this goes. Oh, it says parking is available on the street. Not necessarily the case. Let me see if I can find some parking. There's a spot. Oh, this guy took my spot. Oh. Thank you. Second pickup, Ethiopian. Gotta give you a workout. Very quiet in here. I miss my passengers from the rideshare driving, and right now it's just me talking to a camera. Emerald, my delivery driver. I see. Hello. Thank you. Have a good day. Take care. I did. It's saying leave at the door. I handed it to her. All right, 2 trips complete. $11.69. That's what I got. How are you? I'm great. I just got a massage. Nice. You got the massage, you got the Lyft ride. Are you a Lyft fan? Yeah. Yeah. What do you— what do you like about Lyft? I like the color. You like pink? Clearly. I love pink. So what is it like to be a driver post-pandemic? It's very busy. Busy. Drivers are earning a lot right now, like depending on the city, $35 to $40 in the top cities, uh, an hour. The second kind of I tip, you know, drop someone off, there's like another request cuz it's so busy. Okay, next app, going to try another delivery app. Man, I am extremely hungry right now. Pick up for Malik. Thanks a lot, have a good day. Thank you. Oh, that smell is extremely strong. This is Torturous. This makes me wonder how many people take a bite or like take one wing. I will miss this pizza. I got $7 including the tip. On Lyft, earned a little bit more. I'm actually the co-founder of Lyft. Are you joking? No. Are you shit? No, I'm not shit. Oh my God, you don't even know, I'm turning pink. Congratulations! Gracias! Do you want to be on TV? Yeah. Alright, then we'll make it happen.
