Why Most People Will Never Build Wealth (It's Not About Money)

Kamilah Stevenson argues that wealth-building fails not from ignorance but from survival-mode nervous-system programming rooted in childhood scarcity. Your body triggers anxiety and avoidance around money before your mind can decide to save or invest. Rewiring this requires emotional safety and nervous-system regulation first.

What's up, Wealth Family? I want to share something real, and that's most people don't struggle with money because they're bad with it. They struggle because nobody ever taught them how to feel safe with money in the first place. When you grow up around stress and bills and instability and pressure, your whole body learns how to operate in survival mode, and survival mode and financial freedom do not mix. So if money has always felt overwhelming to you, if you feel anxious when you try to save or invest or even make big decisions, it's not because you're not capable. It's because your nervous system has been trained to brace for impact, not build a future. And that's what we're going to talk about today. Now listen, this is not financial advice. I'm just sharing what I learned about the psychology side of money that nobody talks about but everybody struggles with. And if you're into these type of conversations, go ahead and like the video and subscribe so that you don't miss more. But in this one, we're gonna go deep. Now here's the thing, most of us didn't grow up learning how money really works. We learned how to survive, we learn how to make it to the next paycheck, how how to keep the lights on and how to deal with emergencies. But we weren't taught how to build anything. We weren't taught wealth. We weren't taught investing. We weren't taught emotional regulation around money. None of that. So now as an adult trying to build financial freedom on top of habits that were only meant to help you make it through the week, that's probably the inner tension that you feel. Because think about this, if you grew up watching money disappear fast, if you grew up watching your parents argue about it, if you grew up around scarcity and pressure and survival, your body is going to remember that. Your nervous system remembers every little detail. So the moment that you start trying to save or invest or even think long term, your body goes, hold up, we never been safe here before. And that's why building wealth feels uncomfortable. Not because you're doing something wrong, but because you're doing something new. You see, wealth requires calm. Survival is all adrenaline. Most people are trying to build a future with a body that only knows how to brace for impact. And nobody has ever taught them how do you switch out of that? Now, this concept is familiar to me because I'm a health coach and I deal with stress a lot. But people don't see how this stress and how your nervous system can play a role in how you build wealth. So I want to break down that sometimes a lot of people just don't realize this: your relationship with money is not just mental, it's physical. Your body has a reaction to it. And if you grew up in a life where money was stressful or unpredictable, again, your nervous system learn to associate money with danger. So now when you try to invest or save or take a risk, your body goes straight into defense mode. Do you ever notice how you get tense when you check your bank account sometimes, or when your chest tightens when you think about making a financial decision, or how you feel anxious when you're trying to think long term? That is not always you just being bad with money. That's your nervous system trying to protect you from something that it doesn't understand. Because in your childhood money meant stress, money meant arguments, money meant fear, money meant being on the edge. So as an adult, your body reacts the same way, even though you're trying to do something good with your finances. And that's why people freeze when they should invest. That's why people procrastinate important financial decisions. And you know it's true. And that's why people spend emotionally or avoid looking at their bills. You ever been in a situation where you just didn't even want to budget? You didn't even want to look at your receipts, how much you spent or anything. You just wanted to avoid everything. That is a —real situation that people deal with. And that's why some people make money, but they lose it just as fast. Again, their nervous system has been running the same script for decades. It thinks it's protecting you, but actually it's holding you back. You're not just fighting bad habits, you are fighting old programming. That is huge. And that is something that you got to climb out of. So let's talk about this concept of you fighting programming and not necessarily the market. You know, fighting your programming, not the market necessarily. It just makes money feel hard sometimes, right? Because again, it's not the charts, it's not the economy, it's not the lack of opportunities. It is your programming. And this part right here, when you understand it, your whole life changes. I'm talking about your whole life. Because the truth is, every single one of us grew up with a certain way of seeing money. And that perspective didn't come from books or wealth classes. It came from our environment. Right? So if you grew up watching your family struggle or watching money disappear as fast as it came in, or hearing things like, don't risk it, money don't grow on trees, we don't do stuff like that, or just be grateful for what you have— y'all know what I'm talking about— that becomes your programming, not just in your mind, but again, in your body. So when you try to do something the old version of you never did— investing, saving, taking a leap, trusting yourself— your brain gets uncomfortable. Because it's extremely unfamiliar to the brain. And that discomfort, it tricks you into thinking something is dangerous when it's just really new. There's a process that you have to go through to make yourself feel safe doing the things that you know you should be doing for your future. This is why some people just sabotage themselves, not on purpose, of course. This is not intentional, but it's because their identity hasn't caught up to their goals. See, you can want wealth and still feel unsafe having it, and you can want abundance and you still feel guilty reaching for it, especially when other people come along and make you feel guilty for reaching for abundance. You can also want a better life and you can still hesitate when opportunity shows up because nobody trained or taught you how to hold on to something that's bigger than what you were raised in. So instead of thinking that you're the problem, understand this. You're trying to build a new life with an old blueprint. And until you update the blueprint, your choices will keep pulling you back to what feels familiar, even if the familiar thing has been hurting you for years. This is not about intelligence. This is not about discipline. This is about programming. And now you have to learn how to rewrite that. But before you do, I want you to understand something. Financial freedom isn't just about money. It's about emotional safety. Because if your emotions aren't regulated, you're never going to feel comfortable making long-term decisions. If you're still getting nervous every time you check your bank account, or overwhelmed when you try to invest, or guilty for wanting more, or afraid of stepping into a bigger version of yourself, that has nothing to do with your ability at all, and everything to do with what your nervous system is used to. Building wealth with a body that thinks it's in danger is impossible. And trying to grow when your mind is locked in the past is just not going to happen. You can't become consistent when your emotions are unpredictable. But once you learn how to calm your mind, and once you learn how to create stability inside of yourself, and once you learn how to sit with discomfort instead of running from it, you start making decisions from vision instead of fear. This video is being sponsored by iTrust Capital, and it is the platform that I personally use I use for the IRA side of my crypto. Most people think the whole game is about picking the right coin and catching the right move. And yes, that matters. But what people don't think about enough is what happens after you win. The taxes, the structure, the part nobody talks about until it's a problem. That's why I've used iTrustCapital for a very long time. It lets you get crypto exposure inside an IRA setup. So you're not constantly triggering taxable events the way you do on a regular exchange account. And for some of you, depending on the type of IRA, that can change the entire math long term. I'm not telling you what to buy, I'm not telling you what to sell, and this is not financial advice. I'm just explaining why I use it. It's clean, it's simple, it's built for long-term thinking. If you want to at least understand how crypto IRAs work, The link is in the description. And this is why you see people make more progress once they get emotionally regulated than when they try to force themselves to hustle harder. Because when your emotions are settled, you're going to think clearer, your strategy is going to get cleaner, your decisions are going to become wiser, and money stops controlling you. You start controlling money. See, you went from the back seat to the front seat. And everybody wants financial freedom, but really You can't have this type of freedom without emotional freedom first. You can't build a wealthy life from a stressed out mind. It's not going to happen. And you can't move into the future while your body is still remembering the past. So if you're wondering why freedom feels far away for anything, don't start by judging yourself. Start by learning yourself. Start by giving your mind and body a new experience with money. You got to operate calm and with clarity and with consistency, because once your emotions stop fighting you, your future stops feeling impossible for you. All right, family, listen, if this connected with you and if you're starting to understand why money has felt heavy or confusing or overwhelming, then please go ahead and hit that like button on this video and subscribe so that you don't miss the next one.
