In 2018, I received a Facebook message from a 15-year-old girl, Sadie, claiming to be my sister. It was random. I've never heard of her before, never knew who she was, didn't even think I had a younger sister. I was nervous, anxious, happy, and sad at the same time because I grew up just believing that I was my dad's only girl. And hearing about that possibly I have a younger sister made me happy. Her mother admitted to me that she was with my dad around the time that she got pregnant. When I confronted my dad about the affair, he didn't deny about being with her mom. I asked him why he didn't tell me. I also asked him, was he aware, was it possible, did he know the possibility? And he said yes. At the time during the affair, my dad was married to my mom. So I contacted my mom, and when I mentioned Sadie's mom's name, she stated that she was aware of the affair. I just wanted to know why they held it for so long. Why wasn't I aware of it sooner? Sadie and I have built an amazing bond together. We've been texting, FaceTime calls, regular calls. It's been 6 years. I've never even met her in person yet. I just pray that she's my sister. Time is something we can't get back, but I just pray that if she is my sister, we can move forward and continue to build that connection that we've already built. So many years have gone by without answers, and that ends today.
Listen, everyone, today we'll try to solve this DNA mystery. Let's meet Sadie and hear her side of the story. I saw you watching that video, you started tearing up, and I was like, no, your makeup's too cute. We gotta keep you cute. What got you teary-eyed in that?
Really just, you know, I feel the same way that she does in the video. Like, it's been so long. My mom had first told me about it when I was 12. She had sat me down to tell me that the guy that I once thought was my dad was not my dad. She had told me that there were several other people that it could have been. She had them tested and—
She had other men tested?
Yes.
How many other men tested?
About 9.
9 other men?
Yes.
Wow. Hold on, we don't shame on this show, okay? We don't do that, okay? We all have our past, but I understand for you that must have been shocking.
It was. It was very shocking. I was very confused. I was like, What? Like that many?
Yeah. That's her mama. She can do the judgment. Okay, that ain't our mama. All right. But no, but in all fairness, like I can only imagine what that made you feel because first of all, you're getting shocked at 12 years old finding out this person, it's as if your identity is ripped away from you and then realizing that there's so many options. So it's not like just one clear choice. Yes. That had to affect you mentally and emotionally.
It did, it took a very big toll on me.
I can imagine.
At a very young age.
So who did she say was your father?
She said that Ron could be my dad.
Okay.
She had gotten in contact with him and like the day that she told me everything, she let me, you know, talk to him on the phone. And when I had talked to him on the phone, he was like, "Hey kiddo, it's your dad." I'm over here like, okay, this is the first time talking. How do you even know that you're my dad?
That you're a little too casual for me.
Yes.
Yeah.
You know, we talked for a minute.
Yeah.
That was like our very first time talking.
Yeah.
And so we talked a little bit over text here and there. After a while of that, I did end up going into foster care. Oh. That was very like, I don't know, out of, shocking to me.
Of course.
'Cause I'm just now trying to figure out like, who is my dad? Do I have siblings? Do I have anything?
Yeah. 'Cause you're 21 now.
Yes.
Wow.
I am.
Did you just get outta foster care at 18?
No, so I went through foster care for, I don't even know, a few years. Yeah. Eventually got adopted at 16.
Okay, thank God.
And then, yes. Yeah. Throughout that whole time being in foster care, there were some moments that I could not contact my mom or Ron. By the age 15, I finally was able to contact both of them. And so I reached out to them and did a little searching on Facebook. That's where I found Jessica, on Facebook. And I reached out to her, was like, hey, I might be your sister. Like, I want to, you know, do a test, find out if we're related. And we just talked about it. She was like, well, I wanna know. And it made me feel like, okay, maybe she's on board with it. But I was still scared to text her. I was still nervous 'cause I'm like, I don't know who this person is.
[Speaker:KARAMO] Of course. You're a baby getting all this like adult information and having to process it, search it on your own. While also clearly something happened where you were taken outta the home during this time. And so that's a lot to deal with. Good for you for the strength you have.
Thank you.
So have you developed a relationship with her?
I have a little bit, yes. There were times where we didn't talk a lot, but if I wasn't texting her, my mom would reach out and be like, hey, here's some updates, like how she's doing. Most of that was during the time that I was in care though.
Got it, got it. Do you feel like Jessica is your sister?
I feel like she is.
Yeah.
Although there is still I feel the hesitation she might not be because my mom did tell me there might be another guy who could be.
Okay, did she give you his name, his information?
She knows like the first name of who it may be.
Got it.
But she doesn't even know if he's like alive still or anything, so yeah.
Got it. Well everyone, I think it's time to meet your potential sister. So everyone, please welcome Jessica. To the show. Hey, you sweetheart. Nice to meet you. Let me give you a hug too. Nice to meet you. I see you're emotional. What's going through your mind?
Hurt.
Hurt.
Devastation.
Yeah.
Anxious. It's just so much that I lost out on.
Yeah.
Time.
Yeah. What did you think when she wrote you out of the blue?
I was shocked.
Shocked.
All this time I just believed that I was my dad's only child.
I'm the only girl. Yeah.
So just the thought of having a baby sister, just, I was ready to find out.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And what did your dad say to you?
When she reached out to me, I contacted him. He admitted of having an affair with her mom. He didn't deny the fact that she could be his.
Mm-hmm. And she admitted the same thing to me too.
So I asked him why he didn't tell me. He stated that he didn't know when her mom was pregnant.
My mom didn't even know. She found out like 3 months into the pregnancy.
Oh wow.
So was your mom aware of the affair?
She was aware of the affair, but she didn't know that she was pregnant.
Got it. And Sadie's mom contacted you. How did that go?
She did. It was a cordial conversation as if she had known me. She did tell me that she knew of me, but I didn't know her.
[Speaker:KARAMO] Oh wow. I'm just thinking about your mom at that time and also like about your dad. Obviously this is about you and your healing and you getting your answers. But I just think back like your mom at that time finding out there's an affair and then seeing that there's the child from this. Has she ever talked to you about that?
[Speaker] No.
[Speaker:KARAMO] Are they still together?
[Speaker] No.
[Speaker:KARAMO] They're not together anymore. Okay then. Are you upset that it took so long that he told you?
[Speaker] Yes. [Speaker:KARAMO] Yeah. [Speaker] She graduated, she was in sports. I was in sports, so we lost out on that.
You would've loved to have been the big sister.
Yes.
I hear that. How will you feel about having a younger sister if you find out that she is your sister?
Happy.
Happy?
Yeah.
How does that make you feel?
I mean, I would be happy too.
Yeah, 'cause one of the things you said is you had no one to talk to.
Yeah.
Like if this is your big sister, would you be able to open up to her?
I think so.
I would love to be her role model. Somebody she can talk to.
Yes. Yes.
Did you have a good relationship with your father?
Communication-wise, yes. We live in two different states, but it's that mentality of I'll always be daddy's little girl. So just hoping and praying that she's my sister.
Jose, I think you'll still be his little girl.
Yeah. Were you surprised that he didn't come here today? No. Why are you not shocked?
I just, it's my dad, I know him.
Yeah.
Which I've been made aware of as well.
What is he, is he fearful? What is it about?
We've had conversations for the longest of, you know, he's never denied her and then sometimes he'll just be like, oh, I don't know. So I do believe the reason for him not coming was because, you know, what if she's not?
Even if I'm not, it still would've been, "Hey, at least you showed up and you tried." Yeah, of course. That's my thing.
Yeah, yeah. My producers told me you wanted to say something to her.
I do. I just want you to know that regardless of the results, I will always be here for you no matter what, okay? Yes. You can call me.
Dude, you're gonna make me cry.
Here, baby, I got you. Oh, thank you. I will always be that big sister to you, Sadie, okay? No matter what. Okay?
I love that.
Aww.
Well, I think with that beautiful words, I think it's time to find out the DNA truth. Are you ready for this?
Ooh.
In this envelope is the DNA truth that you've been waiting for. It's the answers you want to know. I've said before many times, this is not my truth to open. This is your truth to open, but we're here to support you no matter what.
I don't know if I wanna open it yet. Oh my goodness. I've literally waited forever.
I'll tell you this, I know there was a lot of moments when you were going through foster care and you were unsure of things your mom was going through and you felt alone. You see, even that moment right there where you said, "I'm not sure if I wanna do this," she popped up by your side. And I'm here too. We're all here rooting you on. You're not alone. You're not alone right now. And we're here to support you.
This is the big moment we've been waiting for.
Oh yeah, it's just crazy. No turning back.
Come on.
My mom was 21 when she had me, or no, she got pregnant with me, and I'm now 21, about to find out. Yeah, so scared to open this. Oh my God.
There's no going back.
Oh my goodness.
I'm always so nervous 'cause I didn't know if that was a scream of like, we're scared, we're sad. So what does this say?
Jessica is your biological sister. I cried.
You have your big sister. How does this moment feel?
I'm so excited. I'm so excited.
Yes.
How do you feel?
Oh, I'm so overwhelmed. You're in shock? Oh my gosh, here you go. Here you go. Don't worry, I keep a big supply around me all the time of these, okay?
Here you go, one more for you.
One more, one more.
Oh my gosh.
You know, some people are scared to face their fears, but You're sitting here with your answers because you're fearless and you have to remember that. You found your sister because you are fearless. You did this work. You did this work.
Oh goodness.
You did this. You did this. So that's the thing, sometimes as kids, as we go through things, we think life is just happening to us and you forget that you have been in control and you are steering this towards the best destiny possible. So you always have to give yourself credit and I'm so happy for you both.
Thank you. I just wanna let you know that you were an aunt at 5 years old. I have 4 children, the oldest being 16.
Are you ready to be an aunt?
Oh yeah.
Okay. Yeah, definitely. I feel like you're about to be the cool aunt. I really do.
Thank you so much.
This is the cool aunt. This is an exciting moment for you all. What do you think your father's gonna say?
I'm not sure.
Yeah.
Oh boy.
Yeah.
Do we both need to be on the phone for this?
Listen, if you need any support with that, I know how to help you have conversations with parents that might be tough. So I can be here for you all for that, all right? But I think it's gonna work out. You know what I mean? He's gonna go through a shock period. He's going through his grieving period. But no matter what, you remind him, this is about me now. Yeah. Because you deserve that. You know what I mean? Yes. You deserve that. I'm so happy for you both. Congratulations. Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Of course you can.
