So please tell me, why are you here?
I'm here 'cause I just learned a couple months ago my niece Ashley might not be mine.
Oh wow.
So this is your brother's child?
My brother's child.
And so where is your brother right now?
He's locked up. He's been locked up for 30 years now.
Okay.
And that's the reason why I'm here for the help of my niece.
Of course.
Yes.
So you always believed that Ashley was your niece?
Always. Ashley is my niece. She's a little mini me. She act just like me. Everyone says.
So that mean if she admitting to you, that mean she fly and pretty too?
Fly and pretty just like me. She's fly and pretty just like me. She acts just like me. I see myself right in her.
Oh, I love that. So tell me this story. So when did you find out that she might not be yours?
She called me a couple months ago and said she want me to come onto your show. And I said, why, Ashley? She said, uh, Nikki, because I need to have this in black and white that my father's my father. Because Ashley, when she was younger, her mom told her to heard someone else was her dad.
Oh, wow.
Came back that it wasn't her dad. And she said that my brother was her father. So we took on Ashley, you know what I'm saying? Like, just like we brought her in growing up knee-high. Got it. And from there on, you my niece, you know? Got it. Let me tell you about this.
Uh-huh, tell me.
No, let me tell you about this. My brother called the other day.
Yeah.
He said since he been locked up, he took a blood test years ago and Ashley's mom did not comply. When he called to get results, so that threw my heart down to my feet.
Of course.
It's a question mark now.
Yeah.
Me and my whole family now wondering, is Ashley my niece or not?
Because if he's taking a test and he's like doing the blood work, why wouldn't you just do it?
She did not comply. Yeah, she did not comply to the blood test.
So no one knew he took the DNA test?
No, he just spoke it out just as bright as day a couple weeks ago.
Yeah.
After the fact that Ashley asked me.
I'm willing to come onto the show with her to do a blood test.
Did you ever ask your brother if he doubted it?
I asked my brother, did he ever doubt it? He did for one minute because of her being somebody else's, but the guy actually told him that he was hers, but we don't know, it's a question mark because we really don't know, but she's ours, we took her in like family. 'Cause that's my niece regardless, like I said, she got a lot of me, she act like me. She's, that's my baby regardless of whatever this may bring. Me and my family just want, the truth.
Of course you want the answers. How does Ashley feel about all this?
Ashley has always said she's been called the black sheep of her other siblings. And that hurts my heart so bad, you know? Because Ashley is a, I think in life Ashley would've been more better knowing who she really was.
Got it.
You know what I'm saying? And she said she always felt like everybody else's siblings knew who their father was, but she don't have hers in black and white. And I said, Ashley, no matter what, you are my niece, I love you to death, No matter what answer it is here today, tomorrow, you are still gonna be my niece. I love you. I love you too. Yeah, beautiful day. Right.
I heard what you just said about like she could have been something more. Did she have a hard life?
Yeah, she did have a hard life. 'Cause I think it goes by her not knowing who she really is 'cause that's what she brings up all the time.
Why the secrecy? Why not just let us know?
Why just not let us know? Yes, yes.
To let everyone know, Ashley took a DNA test to determine if your brother is her father.
Yes.
And Ashley couldn't make it here today,, but she's joining us remotely. So everyone please welcome Ashley to the show. Ashley, can you hear me?
Yes, hi. Hi, how are you?
I'm good. First of all, I'm looking at a photo of you. You are so pretty.
Yes, yes.
Oh, thank you, I appreciate it.
You're very welcome. So who do you think your father was growing up?
I have two potential fathers, my dad number one and my dad number two, which is my Aunt Nikki's brother.
Got it.
But the only really reason I thought it was like two, you know, a possibility because I had one man's last name and then I had one I was being told is my dad. So.
Wow.
You know, they were dad number one and dad number two to me. I didn't reject either one of them.
Did you know him, the first father?
No.
Didn't know him at all. Okay then.
No.
And the second man, Nikki's brother, when did you meet him?
I finally met him at the age of 14. 14. Yes.
And that's why you're saying when you found out, y'all took her in.
We took her in, yes.
It wasn't even a question. You just got close.
That's my mini.
Definitely.
That's my mini.
Was he in jail when you met him?
Yes, he's been incarcerated since the year I was born.
Got it.
I never met him outside prison walls.
Okay then. So what have you learned from him?
I learned that as when I got older, around about 17 years old, we finally had that talk, that, Dad and daughter talk and he told me that he found out that he lost me in a car accident. Meaning my mom didn't tell him that she had me. He got told like when she was pregnant, she lost me in a car accident.
Wow.
So he was never aware that, you know, I was even existing. And which kind of hurt my feelings growing up, you find that out. But hey.
No, of course. Did you confront your mother about that?
Yes, I did.
What was her response for that?
He didn't want my dad to think I was his and she wanted the man, which is whose last name I have, to be my father. But either way it go, he wasn't, you know?
Nikki, let me ask you this 'cause I see you're tearing up right now. What makes you emotional with that? Here you go, love.
Because I know at the end of the day, Ashley, you are my niece and I know you had it hard when you was growing up. But like I told you before, you gonna always be my niece and in our family. No matter what happened to you growing up, you are ours. And I want you to know that I love you.
I love you too, Aunt Nikki.
Nikki, did you know that your brother thought that she had died?
I did not take notes on that till recently. He was saying all this stuff to me. All this is new to me, so a lot of it It's just coming up now, cousin. It's just coming up now, so it's hurtful to me.
Yeah, of course it is. Ashley, what is your relationship like with your mother now?
I don't have a relationship really.
Lord Jesus.
I don't hate her, you know? I just hope we can work things out. And you know, for this, this moment here for me, it's like a healing moment, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
It's the answers I need for, me and my family, you know, for my sanity.
Okay, I'm, I got a question for you because I'm hearing, I'm just trying to fill in the blanks here, but I don't know. Were you ever in like group homes?
Yeah.
Okay, okay. Um, yeah, was there behavior issues? Um, were you ever in juvie?
Yeah, juvenile, doing juvenile time. And when I was in juvenile, I used to write my dad number one and dad number two while I was there. That was like the only people I had, you know?
Yeah.
Even though they're not, they weren't here.
Yeah.
I was like the black sheep on both sides. That's how I felt, you know? Just trying to figure out life. I understand. Here I am, you know?
Yeah. And I'm very sorry because you don't deserve that because a child deserves to have their identity and have their truth. And I think any of us in this audience, the reason we feel for you is 'cause we know that we can understand or if we can't personally understand, but we can empathize with, as a young woman, you're acting out, lashing out, not because you're bad, but because you're being deceived by the adults that are around you who's supposed to protect you, who's supposed to give you security. What I will say is that I'm thankful at some point in your life that your aunt was able to come into your life and that you had some support there. Was that moment a little bit healing for you when you met your Aunt Nikki and at least had someone that was claiming you?
Yeah, all of 'em. You know, even though I was like still young, but you know, my mom took me away from my family for a little while. For a while, but it's on personal reasons with my mom, you know, and selfish reasons. But you know me, I— we're here today because I called my Aunt Nikki and I'm like, Nikki, I know, I know who to call. I need you to come with me. She didn't say no.
I love that.
You know, she there by herself, but she still came. I'm so thankful for that. I appreciate her coming. And even though, you know, I can be there right now, I appreciate you You're welcome.
I love you, honey. I told you I'm always here for you no matter what.
I know. So my producers are telling me right now that your father was locked up with your other potential father. Is that true?
Yes, that's when I was locked up. I used to write them both in juvenile.
Wow.
So when they were locked up and doing the time in the same cell together. Wow. I was in juvie doing my little time.
Did anything happen between them?
No.
Okay.
I didn't know if they ever had any interactions or fighting or anything over all this.
Oh no, yeah, well, the only interaction was really that my, The man whose last name I have told my dad that he's the father of me. That's right.
Oh, wow.
He's not. And so yeah, that's—
So did your potential father ever deny you?
No.
Never? Okay, great. Well, you have waited long enough, Ashley, 29 years, and have been through so much. Again, no matter what these results are, I'm so sorry, no child No one deserves to not have their identity and to not be claimed. But it is time for the DNA truth to find out who you are. And since you can't be here, Nikki, we're gonna have you open this truth, okay? So in this envelope is a DNA truth of is Ashley your niece? This is your family's truth to open, not mine. So here you go.
Thank you so much. This right here is the truth. Let it be. Thank you, Karamo, for bringing us on this show and helping us out to do this lesson.
Thank you so much.
We needed this. Thank you, Jesus. Oh, Ashley, are you ready?
Yeah.
Okay.
Oh Lord. Oh God. Ashley!
Oh my God! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Lord! You're mine! Thank you, Jehovah! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Oh my God!
Yes, you're my niece. Yes, God.
Nikki, it says Ashley.
It says Nikki, Ashley is your biological niece.
Thank you, Lord. Thank you so much. That's my mini me. That's your mini me. I told you, that's my mini me.
Yes, Lord.
Ashley, how are you feeling this moment right now? You now have your identity.
I feel good. I feel great.
Yes, God.
I'm so excited, you know? I am. Now, thank you so much, Karamo, for this opportunity.
You're so welcome.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
I really do pray that this could be a first step in your healing journey, that you're able to, at least now that you know yourself, you now know that this is your family. You know where you come from and that the healing can begin.
Thank you so much.
Yeah, you're so welcome.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
You're welcome so much.
Oh, you smell so good.
Thank you.
Thank you. You're welcome. Make sure to come back next time, friends, so we can keep talking and growing. I love you all.
