All About Emojis with Maury & Karamo! | Karamo Show

Karamo and Maury debate whether emojis belong in work emails. Maury thinks they're too casual; Karamo says modern offices are relaxed enough for them. They also break down slang like "cap/no cap" and "I'm dead" and why people fire off emoji clusters instead of words.

If I use an emoji, it's very rare, but I'll tell you, it's becoming a whole new language. When I look at the comments on the show on various social media, right? And now I see the emojis. I want to see a lot of hearts. I want to see a lot of smiles. You know, I don't want to see anything other than that.
Yeah.
You use them?
All the time. Like texting with emojis is what I do. That's the only place that I'll use them.
Now, am I old school enough to say, you know, people don't want to write words anymore. So that's why they use emojis.
Well, you know, the phone actually switches them for you now, which I have to sometimes go back and say, no, don't put an emoji in there, you know what I mean? But you say certain words, the phone will just switch it for you automatically. Automatically, yeah.
On the show, I see emojis all the time, and you know, you know what, it's amazing. If it's a face, whatever it is, smiling or whatever, there never is just one. There's always like 4 or 5 in a row, you know, or 4 or 5 fires.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Especially if they like a particular set and all kinds of fires going on. I like that.
It's like back in the day when somebody would put like 10 exclamation points just to let you know how much they loved you.
Oh, that's another thing. Are we getting tired of exclamation points in text? Oh, in DMs?
Done with it. Done with it. I'm done with it. Let's just keep the fire emoji.
Yeah. Okay. At the workplace. What about during work hours?
I don't like it. You know what I mean?
Yeah.
People think that I'm old school, but I don't like it. I don't think that at work you should be sending emojis. Use your words.
I think differently about that. Most people are not at the old school work setting anymore. They're either at home, or if they are at work, it's different. It's more informal, you know, no one's coat and tie anymore and things like that. So I assume that with that and everything going on your phone, emojis are okay.
Yeah, I just don't see it. Like, when I get an email, it should be professional. I don't want to see emojis in it, you know what I mean? Yeah, not at all.
Cool, I'm glad we differ. I gotta just say, it's like one of these, you know, my eyes are on you, I guess. Yeah, I'm looking at you.
It's usually if you see something a little sneaky or someone does a little sneaky, it's like, oh, where'd you— oh, that's what we're doing here.
Yeah, you've seen that before.
Yeah, I've seen that one before.
And what's it mean?
So that one is more like, it's like, whatever, you know what I mean? You're just like, I don't care too much.
See, people aren't writing anymore, showing pictures.
That was that universal one that everyone knows, like, keep it zipped, right?
So it's very interesting, you know, you're telling somebody a secret. I learned from my father when he used to say about me, he says his definition of keeping a secret is only telling one person at a time.
I think that might be my definition of keeping a secret too. Blue hat.
Wow.
I don't know what that means.
I mean, I don't know. Does that mean you're from a blue state? I don't know what that means.
Yeah, I guess maybe that is your political blue state. I don't know. I've never seen a blue hat.
No.
So basically it means cap, or people saying cap. Oh, no cap? Yeah. Oh, no cap, mean like I'm not trying to lie.
I don't know what that means, but I know what it is.
I use it when it's like, it's like dead, I'm dead, like oh my gosh, I can't believe you just said that, I'm dead.
Oh wow.
Like you just murdered me with whatever information you said.
If I use an emoji, it's very rare. But I'll tell you, it's becoming a whole new language.
Yeah, it's like hieroglyphics again. We're going back. Yeah, I say use them, have fun with them, but not in a professional setting. Okay.
Yeah.
