Ancestry Test Revealed My Dad Isn't My Dad! | KARAMO

Kristen discovered at 31 through an ancestry DNA test that the man who raised her wasn't her biological father. Her biological father died when she was seven. The DNA results led her to her biological grandmother on Facebook, and eventually to Brittany, who turned out to be her biological sister.

So Kristen always thought she knew who her father was, but at the age of 31, everything changed. Let's meet Kristen and hear what's going on.
So Kristen, come on out.
Hi Kristen.
Hi. How you doing Kristen?
You look pretty.
Spooky.
Thank you.
How you doing, man?
You look so good in person. You look so chocolatey and smooth.
Come on, don't play.
I'm single right now, girl, okay? All right.
Okay? My husband at home.
Okay, I know you got a husband, all right. But so tell me what's changed at 31?
Ooh, all right, y'all, here we go. Okay. Okay. So at 31, I lost a friend suddenly. Okay. And it sent me on a healing journey and I just, I had to change my life. Yeah. And in that process, I decided I wanted to look into my African ancestry, get deeper into where I was from. And so I was so excited about it. My mother-in-law bought me a DNA test for Christmas and I got the DNA test results back and I opened them up and I'm like, okay, these, okay, I know these people, these mom, you know, my cousins and my mom and stuff. And then I'm like, who these other people? And so I'm confused. I'm like, okay, I don't know this last name. I immediately call my mother and she takes a deep breath and she's like, well, Talley is the last name of your father. And I'm like, no, that's not because I know my father. I was raised with him and that's not it. And she says, he's not your father. She tells me that the man I grew up believing to be my father is not actually my father and that the people I'm seeing on this list are the relatives of my biological dad.
Wow, wow. What was your reaction when you heard that news and you saw those results?
Um, I was angry, confused.
Of course.
And there was a tiny part of me that was happy. It was like I, something I kind of, I felt in me was like, okay, you know, this makes sense in a way.
So what made you question why he didn't seem to love you? Was it just because of that?
No, no. Growing up, there were times where he would, I would see him teaching my sister things and I would ask, you know, hey, can you show me, Dad, how to do this and do that? And he would be like, no, no, I can't. You know, he was like, you and Deidra are different. And I was like, "Oh, okay." So I would literally just sit there on the side and—
I'm so sorry.
So it was a lot of time where I just really didn't get why he didn't love me. I was never enough.
Well, what we know now is that you were enough. You were enough, you still are enough. You've always been exceptional. And what breaks my heart about this story is that, and I don't know them, so I'm not here to judge, but what I do know from hearing your experience is that adults did make a decision to raise you.
Yes.
And whether he knew the truth or not, he made the decision. So if you make the decision to allow, to call this young woman your daughter, if you make the decision, you cannot then treat her differently.
That is unfair.
And so that's where I'm like, that's the part that breaks my heart because you could have easily not made the decision. You could have said, you know what? No, I got my child and that's it.
You know what I mean?
But when you make that decision, that's when putting the welfare of the child danger, neglecting you, that's where it breaks my heart. And I'm so sorry because you didn't deserve any of that.
Thank you for saying that.
When your mother told you this, the most painful part for you learning that you had a different father?
Well, it was the fact that he was already deceased. Oh. And so I was like, I'll never get to meet him. He died when I was 7. So I had 7 years that I could have had with him and she took that from me.
Yeah.
She took that from me because it was more important how she felt. My mother would always say stuff like, "Oh, I only got one baby daddy. I got one." And she, like, you know, if you had more than one baby daddy, you was trifling. You was some type of hoe or something. When I think about what she's stolen from me and her attitude, it's as if I'm wrong for wanting to know the truth.
Yeah. How did you track down his family? It was through the, after the DNA, after you took the ancestry?
—Did you email someone? —I did. So my mother, we had that conversation. She gave me the name. I remembered this woman. I used to play with her son, used to go over to her house, and I messaged her on Facebook, and she immediately responded and said, "Yes, I'd be happy to help. This is your sister's name.
This is how you can find her on Facebook." Wow, that's great. Wow. By the way, everyone, for the record, we did reach out to your mother and ask her if she wanted to be here, but she refused to come. Come on the show. So how did you feel when you met your alleged father's mom? That was a beautiful experience.
Uh-huh. Yes, this is my grandma. So—
Now she look like your twin.
Yeah. When that was the day we met. And so I was like, oh my God. And she looked up and she said, yup, you a Tally girl, big and beautiful.
And I was like, Grandma, I was so happy. I was so happy.
Yes. I was like, oh my God.
Yes. So you met your alleged sister Brittany at your grandmother's funeral, I was told? Yes. Okay. Yes. So what will it mean for you if Brittany is your sister?
Oh, it would mean everything. That's a part of me. And not being able to bond with my bio dad. Yeah. Like Brittany is an extension of him. That family is an extension of him. Yes. So it's all I have to hold onto.
And let me be clear, you've only met Brittany one time. One time. Okay then. One time. Well, everyone, please welcome your potential sister Brittany to the show.
Girl. I'm sorry. Sweet. I'm not trying to mess up your dress at all.
You look pretty too. We gotta finish the show, girl. Come on.
Listen, I'm all about, no. I'm all about family connections. So that's why I was like, you take all the time you need, okay? Y'all hug, cry, do what you gotta do, all right? How are you? Thank you for being here.
And that nice lady did my makeup so nice.
Oh, there you go. You still look good, don't worry. You didn't ruin the makeup. Oh, thank you.
Okay, so when did you first hear that Kristin might be your sister?
Like, is it 8 years now? 7 maybe, yeah.
It's been a minute, girl. And she was like, She had messaged me on Facebook and now somebody else tried to claim they was my daddy's child. So I wasn't too sure at first. So I was just like, let me talk to my grandmother real quick about this. Just so I don't get like hyped up or excited about something.
'Cause the person who claimed wasn't just simple.
No, they got a DNA test done and it turned out to be some other man that wasn't my daddy. So yeah, people sometimes come out the woodwork. Churches to try scam and stuff like that. But I didn't know much. I heard a rumor about having an older sister. So when she said she might be my sister, a part of me was like, oh, there might be some truth into it. So I called my grandmother and the aunt that she was talking about and they both had confirmed it. So I was like, okay, this is true.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I can embrace this, you know? Do you see any physical resemblance between you and Kristen? That's my whole twin. Like, what you mean? Do you see this?
The skin, cheeks, everything.
Yes, we is. Yes, we is.
We got to be. Okay, we got to be.
Can I ask you a question about your father? Yeah. What do you remember most about him?
Oh my gosh, I remember his laugh. Like, our dad was just such a great man and such a people person. Like, there wasn't really much of nobody who didn't know who our father was. And even on Boss Wook, well, not any All right, that's still my daddy. That's my daddy.
That's not daddy's. I heard you. I heard you. That's not daddy's. That's my daddy. I heard what he was saying.
No, but you know what? When I got this picture, I showed it off to some of my friends. They said, that's your dad. I said, don't do that.
Don't do it.
Don't do it.
Right, right.
That's still my father.
Right, right.
How many children does your father have?
It's me, her, and our younger sister.
Okay, 3 children, okay. Does it hurt knowing that she never got a chance to meet him?
Oh, it's a rage in me. It really is because even though, you know, she would've been 7 when he passed away, that's 7 years she could've had with our father. That's 7 years that she could've had with me. That's 7 years of us, you know, going to Grandma's house on the weekends with all the cousins 'cause, you know, Grandma, Grandma gonna feed everybody, you know?
And everybody knew our grandmother. When I found out who she was, she was like the neighborhood grandma. People called her Grandma Tally. Like, they called her Grandma Tally. So I was like, dang, I had the cool grandma everybody was rocking with, and I missed out on that.
So what would it mean to you if Kristen is your sister?
Oh, it would mean everything. We've been vibing since that first message. And honestly, it's just, y'all, I love her. I knew it. Like, I knew when she sent me, like, I looked at the picture of her and I looked at me, I was like, oh. She cried when we—
She cried. Our first video chat, as soon as she answered, she was like, ooh, and she just started crying. And she just burst into tears and she dropped the phone. And it was so crazy when I looked at her, I was like, this is bananas. 'Cause growing up, nobody looked like me. And you know, everybody would just, oh, you look like your mama. You look like your mama. But the reality was, no, I don't.
I look like my daddy. I look like my daddy.
Your daddy's girl.
Well, listen, Kristen, are you ready for the truth? Oh God, yes.
Okay, well, here we go. Take my hand. Mm.
Well, Kristen, in this envelope is the truth of your identity. You want to know if Brittany is your sister. 7 years ago, as you're on your healing journey, your life was rocked. Yes. You thought one man was your father your entire life. And even though you knew who this man was, you still felt rejected. You didn't feel connected. Right. And then you got this truth that there could be another family out there. And there was immediate connection with them. I see the joy that you have. In this envelope, it will tell you who you are and if this is your sister. This is your truth to open, not mine.
So good luck. I am, whew. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little scared because finding y'all, it has made me feel whole again. And there's a part of me that, If I opened this envelope and for some reason you weren't, I don't know if I could take it. I would just, it would be like losing family all over again. And that's probably why it took me so long to get to this point.
But you wouldn't, I don't care what it says.
I don't wanna lose y'all. You wouldn't. And it's been amazing just having y'all in my life. And we have all grown so much in these last 7 years. So I don't care what the envelope say. I mean, but thank you. If it don't say what I wanted to say, I'm not letting y'all go no way. We here.
Girl, you stuck with me. Your 30-day free trial is over. You are stuck with me now.
Right, right. So, oof. Okay. Oh my God, Karamo, you done messed all my makeup up.
Okay. And it said, "Kristen Britney is your biological sister." Yes! I knew it.
Oh my God.
And I love you so much.
I love you too. Girl. You're pretty dressed. Oh girl. All right, girl. Oh my God. Oof.
I think that's the best sentence I ever read in my life.
Okay. Congratulations.
I'm so happy for you. Thank you. I'm so happy for you both. Thank you.
I'm happy for us.
Oh, wow.
Yes. Yes. There's a big piece right now that really I know is gonna happen for you. Children who felt rejected, to feel accepted and know that acceptance is real, to know that you have found your family, to know that you have found your tribe. As you're on that healing journey, you needed this step. Yes. You needed this piece to make you feel whole. And I'm excited for the woman that you are going to even grow into more after this because you now know who you are.
Thank you so much.
I'm so excited.
You are so welcome. Thank you. Thank you for trusting me with your story. I'm excited for y'all. Yes. I know it's about to be a good time.
You gotta give us a hug now. Oh, of course. You're so excited.
I'm excited for you. Yes.
I'm excited for you so much. Listen. Thank you.
I'm excited for you. Yes.
