Are We Actually Sisters?! | KARAMO

Monique and Miracle suspected they shared a father, Harold, but DNA tests reveal he's Miracle's biological father and not Monique's. The results trigger grief and relief, prompting Karamo to discuss chosen family bonds and the need to find Monique's actual father.
Chapters
Monique was 17 when she first met her alleged sister, but now questions if they have the same father. So everyone, please help me welcome Monique to the show so we can hear her side of this story. Hey, love. How are you?
Oh my God.
You look super cute. How you doing? Nice to meet you. Thank you for being here. Nice to meet you too. So why do you have doubts about who is your father?
Well, for one, I don't really favor his family, but you know, of course you can't always go by that.
Yeah.
Just looks alone. But there was never a closeness with him. Mm-hmm. I feel like there was just a lot of, I don't know, I feel like there's no bond at all with him. You know what I mean?
Yeah.
And I always wondered in the back of my mind, did he not, do anything for me or be there for me as a child because he always kind of thought that I wasn't his kid. You know what I mean?
And his name is?
Harold.
Harold. Okay, then I wanna make sure. And so do you have a relationship with Harold now?
I wouldn't say a relationship.
Okay. So this has continued through your entire life?
Yeah, he's one of those pop-up once every 5 to 6 year fathers and that's how it's always been.
Okay.
Yeah.
And so while you grew up with him, he was distant, there was no closeness. And then even as an adult, But have you ever addressed this with him and said, "What's going on?" Like—
Yeah, I've asked him several times. I've asked him one time. He's one of those, he doesn't take accountability, you know, at all. He's more or less just like, "Oh, well yeah, you know, I was a truck driver and I didn't do this and blah, blah, blah." He kind of gets off subject, but yeah, no.
Yeah. Did you grow up with your mother?
My sister raised me.
Your sister raised you?
Yeah, I have a sister. I'm in my, I'll be 48 this year. My sister is 65. She's way older than me and she has grown children.
So she raised you?
Yes, I was raised with them like my siblings.
Uh-huh, okay then. And did she tell you anything about your alleged father?
Yeah, well, I mean, not very much. She told me that he was my dad, but you know what I mean?
So it's like the small amount of information and then you're also getting this resistance your entire life.
Right.
Not showing up, okay. And your alleged father Harold, for everyone to know, took a DNA test. But he refused to come on the show or give a statement. Does it surprise you that he refused to be here or?
Not at all.
Not at all?
Not at all. Not at all because that's the type of person that he is.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
It's interesting that he did the DNA test but wouldn't even give a statement. Normally, so I understand sometimes when people don't wanna show up, being on TV is not for everybody, but at least to give a statement since, you know, it's been all these years and you felt like the distance.
Right.
Is Harold on your birth certificate?
No, my stepdad is on my birth certificate. My mom was legally married when she conceived me, but they were separated.
Mm-hmm. Okay, so your stepdad is on your birth certificate?
Yeah, and I actually have stepdad's last name.
Do you have any other men who could potentially be your father?
Not that I know of. Not that you know of. My family hasn't told me anything, but honey, Black folks keep secrets.
Don't they? Don't they? Don't they? Just baby.
I didn't wanna say that, but.
It's the truth though. It's the truth. And what the thing is, is that a lot of it is, it came from protection. We know we need to keep secrets, we needed to do things, but now that ain't serving us no more. It's like, tell the truth. We need to heal. Absolutely. We need to heal. People need the truth. They need to know what's going on. And so, yeah, you right. So when did you meet your alleged sister Miracle?
I had to be like maybe 16, 17 years old.
Uh-huh.
I remember we went to Dallas and he picked me up and brother, there's another child, he picked us up and took us to Dallas. And I remember him bringing her to me. I see this little girl, she's a little chubby little baby, and she had this little strawberry shortcake outfit on, these cute little shorts. And I'm like, whose baby is this?
Yeah.
And he just go put her on my lap and he was like, this is your sister.
And you're like, what?
And I was like, oh, okay. Okay, yeah.
All right.
So then, You know, we didn't grow up together, but I wish we would have, you know what I mean? 'Cause I feel like I could have been a little bit, you see, me being older, I could have been a better, like a little bit more influence in her life, you know what I mean? Because he wasn't, you know, like, yeah.
Makes sense. Did you connect with her when you were older though?
I did. We ran into each other again. I think she was maybe, when she was 17, she was actually 17 and she was getting ready to finish high school. We ran into each other again. Picked me up again. At this time I'm grown, you know. Um, picked me up again. He was just like, hey, come ride with me. Um, so we went down to visit a woman he's married to, and he introduced us to her. Because there's, with him, there's always a woman involved. There's always some other third party. That's never going to be just me, you know, and daughters. Yeah, yeah, me and his kids, you know, you get to know your children or whatnot.
Yeah, yeah, there was always some other woman.
Oh yeah.
You are 17 years apart from Miracle. Do you Is the connection stronger now?
Yes, very much so.
Yeah.
Yeah, very much so. I mean, I feel like because he wasn't a part of her life, you know what I'm saying? I feel like I can try to be there for her as much as I can. Makes me emotional.
Oh, sweet thing. Here you go, love.
Well, I try to be.
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah. Well, 'cause you, I understand the emotion. You understand the pain. Right, right. Of feeling like him not being there and you to see it happening to someone else.
Right, right.
You want to try to correct that behavior and protect her like you wish somebody would've protected you.
Affected you, right? She's the reason why I want to do this.
Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry. No, do not apologize. I think all of us can understand what you've been through, right? And also see the growth and how important this is to you, right? Um, well, I want to meet Miracle to hear her side of the story. So everyone, please welcome Miracle to the show.
You look so cute, Karamo.
I'm already happy. Hi, Miracle. Thank you for being here.
I wasn't planning on doing all this, girl.
So why do you have questions about her being your sister?
Just the closer we got to each other and she just felt like, you know, we didn't really connect with him or, you know, his family. So it was kind of like, you know, when she said that, It's just kind of had me wondering as well.
Do you have a relationship with your dad now?
Uh, not really. I try, but, um, it's, it's, it's hard to, to communicate with him.
It's, um, that's an understatement.
He's, yeah, he's very self-centered, and, um, it hurts to try to have a relationship with somebody that he doesn't try.
Yeah, makes sense.
With you.
And then the fact that, you know, what, what has your dad told you about Monique over these years?
She— he doesn't say much about nothing.
He just—
all I know is I got a sister.
That's it.
Somewhere that's somewhere close to where I'm at. But there was like a—
wasn't it a conversation that came up about my sexuality at one point? I'm a part of the LGBT community. Yeah.
Oh, with him?
He felt like she was trying to be away from him because she had a girlfriend.
Oh, got it. Got it, got it. Yeah, we can clap for her having a girlfriend. We can clap for that, okay?
Not gonna clap before it's real.
We gonna clap for you having a girlfriend on this show, okay? So do you and Monique have a relationship now from your opinion?
Yes, we have a good relationship. Amazing.
Yeah.
I'ma always be here for her. She makes me emotional, like, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
We both make each other emotional.
I know. Yeah.
But you know, I always be so worried about you, you know? Mm-hmm. I don't want nobody to hurt you.
How will it feel to you if she's not your biological sister?
It would hurt. It would hurt really bad 'cause it's like, I've known for so long that I had a sister and I finally get to meet her and bond with her and, you know, have that relationship. And then, I mean, we already have a situation with, you know, we can't connect through our father. And so we tried it ourselves, you know? So we connected with each other. So that would hurt for me to finally, you know, be able to bond with my sister and know her and for us not to, she gonna forever be my sister regardless anyway.
I mean, she's gonna be my sister regardless.
'Cause at this point, I mean, we don't know what the result— We don't know what the truth is. But what we do know is that years of this relationship and the way that you all have been there to support each other, and also even now as adult women, this is what's beautiful about the relationships being a choice. Because when you make that choice to say, "I want you in my life and I wanna be there and I wanna respect you and love you," that choice is bigger a lot of times than blood. You know what I mean? Because we know how many people, you just talked about your father, is blood, but yet he doesn't show up. But when you make that choice, that shows y'all family. So no matter what this truth says, I know that choice will keep y'all strong. But I do think it's time to find out the DNA truth. How do you feel?
I'm nervous.
I'm scared. I want everybody here to know and everybody at home to know, so you both tested separately because we're checking to see if you're Harold's child. Child. So Miracle, you wanna go first since you're the baby? All right, come with me. So Miracle, in this first envelope is your truth. It will let you know if Harold is your father. You had an on and off relationship that has not been consistent throughout your life. And so, you know, you wanna know if this really is your father. This is your truth to open up, mind. So good luck.
I don't know how to feel right now. It's just like a lot of emotions and—
It's gonna be all right, you're doing good. Take your time. Take your time.
Miracle Harold is your biological father.
Okay. Monique, I saw that face.
How are you feeling?
Oh my sister.
She looks like them.
She looks, oh you do?
Yeah, remember the cousin told me that, yeah, Miracle, I know Miracle's ours, she looks like us, but unfortunately you don't look like any of us.
Got it. Oh, you've been hearing stuff as a child, they said this?
No, this was recently.
Recently?
Yeah, this was like 2 weeks ago.
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry.
When I told her that I, you know, when I told her about me. Doing this, she was like, "Well, you don't look like us, but Miracle, we know Miracle's ours, but you don't look like us." Got it, okay.
Yeah. Well, Miracle, how do you feel? You feel now that you know your answers?
I mean, I'm relieved because I don't want to be confused trying to figure out, you know, who can possibly be.
Girl, please, you look like your mom.
I mean, but at the end of the day, I mean, I'm not really excited.
Either. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got it. There's a new song.
Yeah, if you heard the conversation a week ago, then you'll understand why she feels like that.
But at least you have your information, you know, your truth. Well, Monique, it is your turn now. You ready? Come with me.
Got this girl.
So Monique, in this envelope is your truth. You know, your entire life you've had this man who's come in and outta your life as your father. He has not been there. He has not showed you the love and care that you wanted. And so you have had questions. You've even had, as you just said, 2 weeks ago, people saying you don't look like the family. This is your truth though, but not mine, so good luck.
Ooh, girl. I'm hot. It's—
I know, right?
It's so hot in here now.
Ugh.
Well, regardless, like I told you, Regardless of the fact, you know, you're gonna always be my sister. I know you as, you know what I mean? I'm gonna love you forever. I don't know about him, but with you, I'm ride for you forever, baby. You already know this.
Deep breaths, deep breaths.
Take your time, take your time.

Harold is not your biological father.
I know you lying.
For real. And it means that we are not sisters. I swear to God. That is insane. I kind of always figured he wasn't. I swear to God, look. I always felt it. I always felt it. Girl, please. I don't do that.
I know.
I'm surprised too. Because if he's not, who is? Mm-hmm. My family got some explaining to do.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, she's still my sister.
I don't even know what to say.
Yeah, no, no, no, take a sip for me. I know Monique, my producer, told me that your mother had passed away, but is there anyone else in your family who might have some information about that time?
Nope, but it goes back to me saying that people keep secrets. Yeah, yeah. Keep a lot of secrets. So I'm just—
So I will tell you this. This is something I would definitely encourage is—
With her being dead, I don't know who they even like.
Well, I'll tell you this. If you did take a genealogy test, it could ping other family members. And so that could be a first place to start that we could always support you in doing that. Because if you get a genealogy test, it will ping and say you could be part of this family, you could be part of this. And then we could start the digging. We can use all our resources here to figure out somebody so we can see if they're a brother, a sister, a father, someone.
I just wanna make some phone calls right now. Like really bad. Like real bad.
I know, I know.
'Cause this, that's crazy.
I know, I know, I know.
Why? I felt it though. I felt it. Yeah.
You're in shock and it's gonna take some time and you're gonna have to grieve even though your father wasn't the man you wanted him to be. The man you thought was your father was not the man you wanted him to be. It still is going to be some time and just know that, you know, it's gonna be okay.
I didn't tell my family I was doing this, so they're gonna be surprised with, 'cause I need to make a phone call.
Do you think Harold may have some ideas of anybody from that time? But even if he did, it doesn't sound like he would share.
Yeah. Yeah, he's not gonna tell.
Yeah, you can't get anything from him.
Well, listen, we're here as a resource. I've told people this before, any support you need, we will give it to you here. But I do think a genealogy test would be a great first stop because it will ping anybody who has your DNA. And that way we can start to see where we can connect dots. Sometimes it's a third cousin. We've done it before on this show. We get a third cousin and we track that third cousin down to a father.
This is crazy.
And so, you know, just any support you need, we're here for you.
You, you know.
And just make sure to continue to be there with each other.
For sure. For every last one of all of them, all of them, my sisters, aunties, all of them saying the same thing. Every last one of them.
Somebody have to know who she was.
Girl, this is— I'm, I'm to the point I'm so disgusted right now because not because of Harold not being my dad, but it's like, who the hell is Yeah. Like, there's a whole nother part of me that I don't even know. Like, I don't even know who the hell I am, and I'm damn near 50 years old. But now I'm starting to see why she never filed child support on him, or you know what I mean? Or any damn thing. It just doesn't make sense.
