Are We Even Friends Anymore? | KARAMO

In this YouTube episode, host Karamo brings together longtime friends Anissa and Mari to discuss a growing rift that has stretched over months. Anissa recounts feeling excluded when Mari celebrated her birthday with other friends without a clear invitation, ignored a promised trip to see Mari’s great‑grandmother, and used a photo of Anissa’s deceased pet turtle as a Facebook profile picture. She also describes a heated exchange on Twitter where Mari accused her of talking about her. Mari counters that she only used the turtle photo after Anissa asked, denies many of Anissa’s claims, and suggests the conflict may stem from a boy or jealousy over other friendships. Both women repeat accusations of silence, miscommunication, and lying. Karamo repeatedly probes the timeline, asks what each party wants the other to know, and ultimately frames the dispute as a long‑standing communication problem that has led the two to drift apart despite shared memories of food runs, errands, and drunk nights. The episode ends with both parties expressing vague well‑wishes and Karamo’s concluding remark that they may grow separately.

What's going on? Ooh, cute nail. Let me see this. Yeah, work, girl. All right, so what's going on?
So Mari and I have been friends since high school, my sophomore year, her freshman year.
Okay, 'cause y'all like 25 now, 24? Yeah. Okay, so about a decade.
So for her birthday this year, she spoke about going to a restaurant, but she never set it in stone.
Yeah.
So then the day of her birthday, I get on Instagram and she's at the restaurant with some girls, they're turning up and such. And I'm like, I'm like, um.
Where my invite?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So then like that weekend she spoke about she was going out of town to go see her great-grandmother. And so the weekend comes, I see that she did go out of town, but she's now out of town with the same girls that she went to the dinner with. And it's like.
So what about grandma? It's now a birthday turn up.
Yeah, it's like now it's a birthday trip and it's just like, okay, so what's going on with that? Fast forward to A few weeks later, I'm just posting on Twitter. Twitter's like my little diary. Just go up there to talk to myself. And I was just speaking about how I'm just tired of people not being good friends and pouring into people or whatnot. And she commented on my post and was like, why are you talking about me such and such such? And I'm like, a hit dog gonna holler, 'cause my post is not even about you. It's just me talking.
Yeah, yeah.
From what happened on Twitter to Facebook. So I have a pet turtle. So my turtle had passed away on Mother's Day. So this is like my, this is my child.
Yeah, your little baby.
Yeah. So she took a picture of like my last moment with my turtle and put it as her Facebook profile picture.
Oh, oh, she was trying to be shady.
Yeah, like being weird.
She's trying to pack in the air and the gas so what, Valley is still—
That's weird.
Oh, that he would still be alive if you ain't gas him up?
She's weird for that. That's weird.
Yeah. Did you ask her why she did that?
When she had posted that, she was blocked. People were sending me screenshots. So that's how I seen it. So then now I gotta unblock you 'cause you done hit below the belt. Now we gotta take it to shit.
Yeah. Moniece, you brought some of the comments to show me as well that she said.
Correct.
Can I see those?
I was telling her like, move around. 'Cause people were ganging up on me on the comments. I said, move around, get your minions before it get ugly. I already told you, leave it alone. I already told you, drop it. Now you just doing too much. And I said, again, you can go ahead and, and again, a hit dog is gonna holler.
You said expeditiously. Okay. But when did you start to notice that you were having issues in your friendship?
So I work, I do, Social work. So, like, so, so she can't really keep jobs or whatever like that. So, and I said, like, my job is hiring, I can put you on. And she said, like, nobody wants to do that dumbass stuff that you're doing but you.
Hold on. Don't talk about social workers. Y'all, don't do it, girl. Yeah, this is weird to say. Like, I'm all free, but you start talking about social workers and we gonna have a problem, girl. You know what I'm saying? Like, don't talk about social workers. I think it's time that we hear what Mari has to say. So everyone, please welcome Mari to the show. How you doing?
Hi.
Thanks for being here.
Hey.
So this is the first time you're seeing or speaking to Nisa. So what's going on through your mind?
I don't feel nothing. I'm just mad.
Why are you mad?
The only reason that turtle was put as my profile picture is because she told me to expeditiously. So I said, okay, I will right next to your dad's hurtle.
Well, I thought that post was on that.
No.
So it was on the Facebook post.
It was after she made her post and did all them comments. And when she told me to expeditiously.
So this was on Twitter on yours?
No, that was on Facebook.
That's Facebook.
Okay, you saw her tweet, she told you it wasn't about you.
So she say.
Then you went to Facebook and said something about her.
No, that's not true.
What did you say?
This girl be throwing subliminals. She's claimed the Twitter thing was not about me. Okay, cool. I'm the only person you said, she texted me, she said, "I have a bone to pick with you." Okay, cool. You never said the bone, never said nothing. Okay, cool. I get on Facebook, you're still going, you still going. Who else are you talking about?
I said I had a bone to pick with you days before that situation happened.
Okay, and listen, and I gave you multiple times to say what you had to say. You never said nothing. Come the end of May, Here you are on Facebook, here you are on Instagram, you're still going.
What do you mean?
First of all, that's not even true.
What do you mean?
It is, it is, it is.
I said I had a bone to pick with you days before the Twitter situation.
And you never said it. And again, my Twitter situation, and I never said nothing to you. And you never said it.
'Cause I was gonna say something to you.
And you still never said it.
How many times have I tried to talk to you?
You never said nothing.
You would say, I don't give a fuck. Save it for when I'm more mature.
You said you had a bone to pick with me. I sent you a GIF. You said, I'm not time, I don't have time for the games and gimmicks. I said, either you gonna talk Or you're not gonna talk.
And what I chose not to do.
You didn't talk, okay, that's your fault.
Okay, that's your fault.
Because your daughter do what?
Give me your ass kiss like you always do.
What do you mean?
So you've been friends for over 9 years and haven't spoken in 6 months? What has that been like for y'all? What has it been like for you?
I'm fine.
What's it been like for you?
Life goes on. I've been working.
Mm-hmm, okay. How bad have things gotten between the two of you?
It never got this bad.
Never?
Mm-mm.
This is the worst it's ever been? Mm-hmm.
Uh-huh.
And why didn't you invite her to your birthday dinner?
She did get invited. I don't know why you keep saying that. I only hang out with the same people. Why would I not invite you to my dinner if you and everybody else is the only people I hang out with? Why would I not want y'all all around together?
You never set it in stone about your birthday dinner.
Now I'm just lying? Okay, Anissa.
So you feel like you told her about it.
Any birthday I never had, I never invited you?
Shamari.
Okay, Shamari, answer. Okay, so I said my 24th birthday, I didn't invite you. All of a sudden you never got invited. The Charlotte trip, I did say I'm going to see my grandma, and it was a girls trip too. I killed two birds with one stone.
So why did you tell about the girls?
No, she never came because she just got a job at Social Services. Okay, I let her head that she could take days off, and then I don't work on the weekends, baby.
No, don't lie.
No, that's not true.
Don't work on the weekends.
Anywho, and on top of that, she was going out of the country for her birthday and I let you have that in July.
Okay, listen, you said it's in May. Did you say that on a girls trip? Did you tell her that?
Yes, I did.
So Mari, what do you think the beef's really about? What do you think the beef's really about?
Ain't no beef.
It gotta be a boy.
Do you think it's about a boy?
I mean, I'm gonna keep going. A boy, you mad that I hang out with other, I don't know. You need to tell, you the one with the issue. And that's sitting here looking dumb.
Mari, is there something that you want Anissa to know?
No.
Nothing? Okay, cool.
Lying, like I said, lying. A boy? Make it make sense. What boy?
I said, is it about a boy? Is it you mad I hang out with other people? What?
Is there a boy? 'Cause you keep bringing that up.
Exactly, that's what I wanna know.
Is it? Is you mad about? Girl, anyway.
Who's this? What is this? Is this somebody you used to talk to?
No.
Okay. All right, so listen, my producers asked you to write down what you want to say to each other.
Let her start.
Okay, let's start.
What do you miss about Anissa? Our friend dates, slash outings, the talks and the laughs, our little errands we used to run.
And what did you write?
Pretty much the same thing.
Read it. Let's hear, let's hear what you wrote.
I miss the random food runs, the random random store runs, our picnics, us going against the world together, the drunk nights, the friendship when things were good and whatnot.
Yeah, okay. Well, how do you make you feel hearing that?
Hmm? That's nice to hear.
Yeah. I think that y'all two have had a communication problem for many years. But unfortunately, if I'm gonna be real with y'all, I really think that this is two friends that were high school friends that have reached the point in their relationship where you're growing apart. So remember the good nights, remember those fun times, remember the errands and say those were great and I'm glad we had them, but I wish you the best on your growth and I wish you the best on your growth. You wanna turn to your friend and tell her, "I'm so glad we had these memories, but I wish you the best on your growth." Good luck. No, no, no, no, no. You can do better than that. You can do better than that. Uh-oh. You wanna try?
Wish you the best. Good luck.
Yeah. Well, one day y'all will look back on this and you'll understand that it would've been more sincere if both of y'all could've just put the hurt feelings aside just for a second because I know at the end of the day you do too both wish each other the best. You're both gonna grow and have your both separate lives and it's gonna be great, but it's not gonna be together. Yeah? Wish you both the best of luck as well. All right? Thank you.
