What was your reaction when you got this DM from Angel?
I would say my reaction, I remember the day perfectly. So I was cleaning my apartment and then I get a message on my Instagram and I was kind of like, oh, this is a girl. I thought it was kind of, I mean, a situation where the girl was like, hey girl, like this, my boyfriend's messaging you.
Yeah, okay.
But no, it was not that situation. So I read the message and she told me that we are potentially sisters. So I remember I put my phone down and I kind of took a minute to breathe and I called my mother and I was like, "Mom, I don't know what to do. Like I'm freaking out. How do I respond to this?" So she just told me, she goes, "You know, take your time, put yourself in her shoes and just, you know, you don't have to respond right now." Mom gave great advice.
We have that message that was sent to you. Can I see the message? Hi, I know this is all super weird and random, but I wanted to at least try and reach out to you. We have the same father, blank. I'm 17. He's never been a part of my life, nor has his family. But a few years ago, I found out about you and your brother. I just wanted to, I guess, introduce myself. And I definitely understand if you don't want to get to know each other or anything like that. I just want to say hey. I just thought it would be kind of cool, I guess. I don't wanna come off mean 'cause this is over a message, so I know it's hard to interpret how I'm saying it, but how do you know How were you certain that he's your father? Was the DNA test done? Okay, that's a valid question. But also I didn't realize, 'cause this happened recently, right?
About a year ago, yeah.
A year ago. So she was young, she was only a teenager when she hit you up. Yes, 17. Yeah. Wow, okay, 'cause she's super young and she's gonna be here today.
Yes.
Wow, okay then. So do you believe that she could be your sister?
I, yeah, very much.
I do.
I see similarities in like her and my dad.
Okay, and when did you first hear about Angel? Was it that message or did you hear about her beforehand?
So when I was 18 years old, I was trying to form a relationship again with my father as an adult, seeing who he is for us, like his own person through my own eyes.
Yeah.
And so I had asked him because he had mentioned it. And so I asked him, I was like, you know, is that your kid? Did you guys do DNA testing? And he said that the mother did not want to partake in testing. Oh wow. Okay. So he was just like, "Yeah, I mean there's nothing else I can do about it." And it just simmered down from there.
Got it. Okay then. So it's not as if this came outta the full blue.
Yeah.
'Cause you've heard a little bit about her.
Yes.
So do you think that he could be lying about her mother not wanting the DNA test?
Absolutely.
You do feel that way? Yeah.
1,000%.
Okay then. Have you always wanted a little sister?
Yes. So small little story. So I have a little brother, we are 10 years apart. When we went to go find out the gender, I wanted a sister so bad and we found out it was a boy. I threw a fit and cried and screamed on the floor. I was so upset.
I get it. I always wanted a little sibling as well and I never got one.
Yeah.
I was having a fit. So how would you, your life have been different having a little sister?
I feel like honestly, I mean, I did do my little brother's makeup a lot, but she would've enjoyed it more.
Yeah.
Getting her ready for like school, prom, Proms, like any kind of school dances. Being able just to share those girly moments, 'cause it's really hard to explain it coming from a girl. Those little moments like doing your makeup in front of the mirror, listening to music, having a drink or two.
Those special moments.
Yes, of course having a drink of age, but.
Yeah, no, I get it now, I get it. Yeah. If she turns out to be your sister, how will you handle all the years lost between you two?
I think honestly just, you know, moving forward with our lives and trying to rekindle and like create a relationship between each other that we've missed out on.
'Cause do you live close to each other?
No.
You live far from each other?
Yeah, different states.
You live different states from each other? Yeah.
Okay.
All right, it's time to meet Angel's mother, Alicia. So everyone please welcome Alicia to the show. Hi, Alicia. Hi, Karamo. Hi, Alicia, how you doing?
Thank you.
Thank you for being here. So how did you first meet Angel's father?
We both worked for my stepfather.
How did it feel raising Angel without a father?
It was hard, it was difficult. I showed up and did things with her like Donuts with Dads and, you know, just trying to teach her that it's okay, like she's special whether she has him in her life or not. The hardest part was I had an older daughter, 8 years older than Angel, that had her dad.
Got it.
So not having that for one kid.
What's making you so emotional right now? There you go.
It's okay. It's just a lot of buried emotions.
Yeah.
You know, you can't do anything about it, so you just try to move forward.
Yeah. Yeah. 17 years of that. Almost 18.
18. She just turned 18 on Monday.
Oh, she just turned 18.
Yeah.
Okay. Happy birthday. But 18 years, I can understand.
Yeah.
I think sometimes we forget that even though mom is being strong and she's doing her best, And like you said, you still have to just bury that so that everyone else can have a normal life.
Yeah.
But this impacts you directly as well.
Yeah, and you just try to live by example and stay strong. And you know, there's a lot of statistics involved with single mothers and kids being raised by single mothers and a lot of judgment, you know, society and stuff. And you don't, you want them to know that they're beautiful and strong and worthy, so.
What kind of sacrifices do you have to make do you make to fill both mom and dad role?
I kind of did everything that surrounded her, you know? I gave up dating over 10 or 12 years ago.
Yeah, yeah.
'Cause I had to work a lot and, you know, it was hard leaving her with people you don't know when you're at work. And then there was times where she went with me to work a lot when she was little. But as a teenager, she was—
Don't mess with dads. I'm both, aw.
Mm-hmm. But yeah, you know, I worked a lot to try to provide and give her a good home and stuff. So when I wasn't working, I was taking her to the roller rink with her friends or to the beach to watch the sunrise and, you know, doing whatever I could just to be there and be present.
Mm-hmm. Did you know that Angel was reaching out to Alexis?
Yeah, so she had mentioned to me one day, and I knew the day would come, she said, "I wonder if I have siblings." And I said, well, you actually do have two siblings. And she wanted to see what they looked like. And I had been keeping track of them 'cause I knew that day would happen.
And—
Good job.
Thank you.
Yeah.
And I said, she said, can I reach out to my sister? And I didn't know how I felt about it 'cause I didn't wanna disrupt anyone else's life. And there was never a DNA test. On Case In Act, you can actually see where the state of Missouri and myself, Alicia, took him to court for DNA. It's right there for public knowledge. And he didn't show up multiple times. And when he didn't show up for the last time, they found him in default. So he is on her birth certificate.
Mm.
How did you first hear about Alexis?
Um, from her father.
From her father, okay. And that's how you got their names to be able to keep up through the years? Yeah. How did Angel react when Alexis responded to her message?
She was ecstatic and overwhelmed. I think she even cried. She was so happy.
Yeah. What did you hope that Angel would gain if she found another sister?
Somebody to look up to, somebody to talk to, get advice on boys and tell 'em who to talk to when she's fighting with her mom and absolutely. Well, today, if today it confirms that they are sisters, what would it mean for you to have them I just hope that they can spend time together and get to know each other and maybe even, you know, bond a little bit. I think that if Alexis could have been in her life, it would've made things easier with not having her dad and somebody to talk to about that because her other sister obviously has her father around, so.
Got it. Well, listen, I think it's time to meet your potential sister, Angel. Have you met her in person yet?
Once.
Once you've met her. Okay then. Well everyone, please welcome Angel to the show. Hi Angel, how you doing? She has a nervous laugh.
I'm glad, how are you?
Yeah, I was good. It's fine, you just turned 18. I would be nervous too coming on this whole TV show like this, so I get it.
Yeah.
So what's the scariest part about this reunion for you?
I wouldn't necessarily say there's anything scary. I think we're both looking for the same answers.
Yeah, okay then. When was the first time that you heard about Alexis and what was your initial reaction?
I remember being at like my Nana's house and asking if I had any other siblings and my mom was like, "Yeah," and then showed me pictures. I didn't ask about reaching out to them at that point. But then last year I had asked again. I was like, "Wait, don't I have other siblings?" And my mom was like, "yeah." And I was like, "What do they look like?" She showed me and then I was like, "Can I text them?" Yeah. And at first she was like, "Mm." And I was like, "Please." And she was like, "Okay." Yeah. She was like, "I don't know if they're gonna respond though." And I was like, "Okay, let's try it." So how did you feel when she did respond to you? Oh my gosh. I remember like sending her the message and then getting in the shower and I was like, okay, like, is she gonna respond? And I was like, no, she's probably not. Like a random person is messaging you, I'm your sister. Like that's something out of a horror movie. It's like, would be my first instinct.
It's actually more common than you think.
But then I got out the shower and I saw that she texted me and I like wanted to scream. I was like, oh my gosh, there's no way.
If she is your sister, what moments in your life do you wish you had her there for from before?
Probably whenever, like there was a point in like high school, like I had like not really many friends and I feel like it would've been good to have somebody there that like I know isn't gonna judge me or anything.
Yeah.
I don't know, probably just gets it. And she's also older than me so like I feel like she'd have a lot of good advice.
Yeah, yeah. So do you believe she is your sister?
Yeah.
You do believe it? Yeah. Okay then. If she is your sister, How do you want her in your life? Do you want her active in your life?
Oh yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Are you open to that? Being active in her life?
Absolutely.
Because she is your sister. Okay then. Well, I think you waited long enough. Angel, are you ready for the DNA truth?
Yeah.
Okay, well listen, come with me. Here we go. I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry. I'm gonna have you stand right here.
Okay.
So Angel, in this envelope is the truth of your identity. You have had questions, your mother had some answers for you, and then you took a big step as a young woman and said, "I'm gonna reach out myself. I'm going to start the process." And a year later, you've now got on this stage where you can confirm if that is actually your sister. This is your truth to open, not mine. So good luck, okay?
This is so nerve-wracking. We're sisters.
Holy crap. Oh my God. Oh my God. How's it feel? Come take a seat. How's it feel?
I'm shaking. Holy crap. Guys.
It feels refreshing.
It feels refreshing. All right, let me give you a— here you go.
Here you both go.
Yeah. Here you go. So you have confirmation that is your sister. I'm very happy. Mom, I saw that also you were able to release. What does this moment feel like for you?
I'm just so happy the truth finally came out. I always knew, but so many people—
I don't know what I expected.
Tried to make me out to be crazy and lying about it. So a lot of lies and a lot of people judging me and I'm just so happy that they now can build a relationship and have each other.
Yeah, I'm glad for both. I'm glad that they, you have your truth. I'm glad that you have each other. But as well, I'm glad that you actually have been vindicated, that you actually get to release this because I can understand what it's been like for you holding this in. Thank you. Alicia, have you ever met Alexis' mom, Lola, before?
No.
She's in the audience. She's right there. She's absolutely— I knew the whole time.
I knew she was.
You knew the entire time?
Well, I knew from the photos.
Yeah, you could tell.
Yeah, absolutely.
Awesome, awesome. Listen, I want to, I wanna go ahead and do something because I know you live in different states and I know you're getting, need to get to know each other now that you're 18. I wanna buy a plane ticket for you all to meet each other and see each other.
Oh my God.
This is great.
So that way you can have a little sister day. Yeah. I want that because I wanna make sure that more time doesn't go by where you all don't have time to bond. But secondly, I also wanna give you something. I wanna send you out to dinner, a night out for yourself. You've had mom, dad role for the longest. You have had to do so much. Well, you reminded me exactly of my mom, the one who just says, "You know what? I'm gonna put my feelings aside and I'm gonna do everything for my kids." And it's women like you that make us kids have the best lives possible. And so I wanna make sure that you have a day. Now I'm gonna make sure you have some money to go get like a nice meal, get a cocktail, go out. You better not spend it on no kids.
Okay.
You gotta promise me, no spending on kids. You're gonna spend it only on yourself.
I promise.
You promise? Thank you so much. You deserve it, okay? You're welcome. You do deserve that. Thank you, Karamo. Congratulations. I'm so happy for you. You all have a new family members now. So congratulations. All right, everyone. Make sure to come back next time, friends, so we can keep talking and growing. I love you all.
