I’ll Never Call You Daddy Again | KARAMO

Mark raised his step-granddaughter Markeya after promising her grandmother he would, but their relationship fractured over money requests, a Thanksgiving incident with spilled juice, and Mark's response to her disclosure of sexual assault. Markeya says she was forced out and never felt loved; Mark says he didn't know about the assault until later. Karamo helps them agree to stop relitigating the past and try again.

Hey friends.
So my next guest, Mark, reached out to me because he wants to restore his relationship with his daughter Markeia. Let's see what Mark had to say about this entire situation.
Markeia and her sisters are very rude and disrespectful. Before their grandma died, she had me make one promise that I would take care of these kids and I've done that. I've raised Markeia and the girls as my own, especially Markie at 6.
Months.
I piled the Christmas tree up to the top with presents. I've taken them to Disney World, Great Adventure. We went through every place together. I spoiled them rotten, and I wanted them to have something that I never had. I did everything for them. As they got older, they totally started disrespecting me. 3 o'clock in the morning, I get up and there's a boy in, in Markeia's room at 3 o'clock in the morning. She just didn't care. Now they moved away from me. They act like I don't even exist anymore. They don't even call me. They don't say, "Hey, Dad, how you doing?" Karamo, I know you could help me fix this with my daughters. Right now we have Markia here. Please help me fix this. Help me get this right with them. I don't know why I'm being treated like this.
Hey.
Well, listen, everyone, please help me welcome Mark to the show. Mark, thank you for being here. So, Tell me immediately what's going on.
Well, I raised 3 girls.
Yes.
Markeia was the oldest. I had her since she was 6 months old.
I wanna know from you, when do you think in your mind Markeia started to act out?
God, Markeia started acting out, she brought a boy into the house when she was in high school. I caught the boy upstairs with Markeia in the bed.
—this is what you're referring to at 3:00 AM?
—at 3:00 AM in the morning. And I was like, no, no, no, no. I said, that ain't happening. And of course, you know, he went ba-boom down the stairs. One other thing that she did, I invited her over to the house 'cause she was on her own and said, hey, how about having Thanksgiving dinner? So she came over to the house. Of course, I was dating a girl named. She was really high, and she took a knife and started stabbing the fork like this into the meat. And then told one of the kids, "You're either, you're a pig," or something like that. Then got up and said, "Hey, you're outta here, you're done." As walking her over to the door, she had a juice in her hand and she meant to throw it at, but it hit my computer and it hit the printer and just like totally ruined the printer and the computer. So Markeia is constantly asking you for money? Not, well, constantly, but— How often does she ask? Doesn't ask that much, but when she do ask, it's not a little amount, it's a big amount. Got it. And not even say, "Hey, thank you." What promise did you make to her grandmother? Her grandmother and I was taking care of her. I came home from work and I found her on the sofa. She was, she died right then and there. I remember before that she said, "If something happens to me," I want you to take care of these kids. I don't want 'em to go to foster care. I could've left and everything, but I stood there. I stood there for them because I wanted them to have better than I did. Got it.
I wanna be clear, you're her step-grandfather. Yes. So you have no biological ties? No. Listen everyone, Markeia sees things very differently. Please welcome Markeia to the show.
Hey, how are you? Good, you?
Good. Thank you for having me.
Of course, I'm glad you could be here. I wanna first ask from you, what happened at Thanksgiving? Everything changed.
He was like, "Oh, you're being rude. This is not how you come into the house asking questions." I never stabbed into the meat. And even if I did, he doesn't know how to cook. So I was probably just checking it out, but I don't even remember.
So you said all of this about money. Explain that to me.
If I ask him to do something for me, he'll do it, which is nice. I appreciate him for that. I thank him all the time.
Why did you move out?
I was forced out.
Ooh, she said she was forced out. Did he force her out?
No. It wasn't him, it was his wife at the time. Mm. I told him that I wanted to clean up the house before I officially moved in. He said, "Okay, that's fine." His wife was over at the time. They weren't living together, but she was spending the night.
Yeah, but Markeya, that's not entirely what you're saying 'cause she, When she came over there, there was some things that you did and you wanted to move on your own. She turned around here and helped you. She went and bought— No, she didn't help me. Oh yeah, she did.
Okay, wait, 'cause he asked me a question. Can I please finish? She texted me like, "Oh, packed up your stuff." Then she was being funny 'cause I had toys at the time and he just didn't do anything about it. Did help you. How did you help me?
But wait, wait, did you?
I'm gonna tell you.
How did you help me? Because she went out and bought the curtains for you.
I never asked to help you out.
She said you did. And then when you got your own apartment. So, taking my stuff though? Yes, because you had your own apartment. So, what we did.
I was cleaning up my house.
Yeah, but Markey, what we did, but you had the apartment, right? You did have your own apartment.
But do you understand what I'm trying to say? No. You forced me out.
Markey, Keith Jefferson, was he a good father growing up?
Yes, until my grandmother passed away. Got it.
What changed after your grandmother died? Him being there supporting.
Like he says he was supportive, but he really wasn't. There was no love. Even if he said there was love, I never felt the love. Markie, I support you. Hold on, he asked me a question. I understand that. No, please. No, wait a minute. Be respectful. He asked me a question. I'm trying to answer him.
Yeah, but I'm just telling you that what you said was wrong. It was wrong. And then just like when you took that juice and you threw it on at her and it landed on the computer. No, it did not.
Yes, it did. Behind you was a whole wall. No, you were here.
The computer was on there. You threw it in the door. We were at the door. Markie, the computer was right there by the door and it's right on the wall. And when you tossed it, why am I gonna lie? It went right on the computer.
I went through your phone. You always tell me, oh, I don't cheat, I don't do this. But I went through your phone, point in time when my grandmother was alive and you was talking to females. So I'm like, I'm trying to text your grandmother. She doesn't text.
Let's go to the bottom line since you brought that up. Go ahead. Your grandmother, cheated on me with another man. And that's why— Why, God, shut up. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Now I'm gonna tell you why, since you brought that up. That's why she slept on the couch and I slept in the other room.
'Cause you're disgusting. You stink, she said. No, that's bull crap.
You said that there's some bad behaviors that Mark has.
Yeah, he is verbally abusive.
Do you agree with those things? No. Yes, I do. No. Markie, will you ever call Mark dad again?
No, after this, no. Why not? I wanted to work things out after this, but no. No, at all? It's not working.
Oh, we just got a ping. There's a message that I want everyone to look at. You didn't believe me when I told you I was sexually assaulted. When she told you that you were sexually assaulted, do you not believe her?
I didn't even know anything about it until, hold on. I didn't even know anything about it until afterwards, and I wanted to go after the person who did it.
I gotta tell you, the biggest red flag for me is When someone says they're sexually assaulted and they're your daughter, I know you said you didn't hear it or you heard it later.
Yeah, I heard it from somebody else.
But even if you heard it from someone else, even to this moment right now, you're more about defending when you heard it or when not than realizing that your daughter, that's a traumatic situation. And so even in this moment, I need to stop before we go to anything else and you have to look at her and acknowledge that she went through something traumatic. That's for a young woman in this world. She's supposed to feel safe and you're her father figure. And in a moment when she got, she felt assaulted, felt attacked, look at her head right now. She did not feel safe. What do you say to that?
Well, all I'm just saying is, you know, I mean—
Don't say it to me.
No, I'm just saying, I, at the time I'm telling you, I didn't know how to react.
But again, you just did what I just told you not to do. You're talking about defending when you knew it or not, your daughter said she was sexually assaulted. Speak from your heart to your daughter right now. I'm sorry that happened to you.
I really am. I'm not defending myself. I'm just saying I'm sorry that that had happened to you. I am sorry. I'm sorry that that happened. I'm sorry. I wish I could be there. Honestly, maybe I could.
But you wasn't, so it don't even matter.
No, it does matter. You know? No, it does matter.
I forgive you.
But I'm gonna move on. So what do you mean by that?
Do you wanna move on? I don't want no relationship.
There's a really good piece here that's going on. Do you know she has abandonment issues? No. And I'm not saying that you're a bad guy. You took in this child and I know you love her.
I know you love her. I love her very much.
I know you do. But the thing is, is that by the way that you've been approaching this, being strict, talking about what I did for you, is not what this little girl needed. She needed to know that she was safe. She needed to know that she was protected. She needed to know that she's not gonna be replaced. She needs to know that she's loved. She needs you to talk from your heart more.
I'm sorry, you know, that I wasn't there as much as you want me to be there for you. I wish I can go back in time and change things.
Yeah, we all do, but you have chances to sit there and fix things. You don't, you just sit there, cry, and just throw things all over the place.
But that's why I came on this show so I can try to fix it. Yeah.
Marquis, I wanna ask you this. What would it take from you, because he's listening right now, his ears are open. What would it take from you to call him dad again and to believe that maybe you could work towards a better relationship?
You always worry about the past and bringing up the past, what I did this and what you did, and nobody wants to worry about the past. How you supposed to move on and grow?
Can you make that commitment not to bring up the past?
I promise you I will not throw anything in your face I will not say anything about the past. Actions. No, I know actions speak, but that's why I'm here. If I didn't care, I wouldn't be here. I hurt just as much, but maybe to you, you don't feel that way, but I do.
What can you do to say, "Dad, I need you to make me feel safe"? What do you think he can do?
Show that he actually care. He don't really show that much. Stop involving money.
Yeah, so, but tell him.
Show your emotions more.
Say, "I'm sorry, I really am." Okay. You know, I want to start fresh. If you let me, I want to start fresh.
Marquise, can you let that wall down just a little bit to let him in?
Yeah. You can? I'm sorry. I'm sorry, baby.
I'm sorry. Hold on. Where are you going? I'll tell you where you're going. Right here to subscribe and right here to watch more. Period.
