I’ve Been Searching for 44 Years, Are You My Sister?! | KARAMO

Sean spent 44 years searching for a sister he saw in a childhood photo. A Facebook suggestion led him to Kelly, and a DNA test confirmed they share the same biological father. Both cried as they learned they were half-siblings.

So how did she suddenly appear in your life 3 weeks ago?
I woke up one morning and went right to Facebook like I always do.
Phone right there.
And she was a suggested friend.
Wow.
So I already knew what she looked like. And you know, over the years I've found pictures of her online and stuff. Just kind of watched her from a distance. But when I saw her looking back at me and it was like me looking at myself, That told me that was the day, and that's the day that I went in her inbox.
So we have that message that you sent her right after you saw her. Let me take a look at this.
Okay.
It says, "Good afternoon, beautiful. I sent you a friend request because I believe you to be my sister. I'm 54 now and I have known about you since I was 10. I come in love and peace. I grew up as the only child and I just want you to know that I have loved you as mine since I found that picture years ago. I carried you in my heart for 45 years. You came up in my suggested friends today and I had a whole meltdown." "I looked at you and see me, so God told me today was the day to meet my sister." Wow, I could get emotional reading this. "God bless whatever comes. 44 years, I will actually be 54 in March.
No rush." Yep, that was it, Karamo.
Wow, okay. So when you told Kelly she might be your sister, we see this little response here. Was she open to it otherwise?
She was. I thought it might take, you know, a couple months. To get a response back. I didn't expect a response immediately because that's shocking.
Yeah.
It took a couple days.
Couple days.
And it was just, it was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. She was very receptive and said that she felt the same way.
Yeah.
At a stage in her life that there was a possibility that she could be ours as well.
Oh wow. So how old were you when you first learned about Kelly?
I was 10 years old.
10 years old.
Yeah, my parents weren't together. I was on a visitation with my dad and he was at work and I just happened to be in his room and it was just a little wallet-sized picture. On his dresser, but she looked more like my dad than me.
Yeah.
So it brought about questions and a messy family member told me that that was my sister and I went and asked my dad immediately.
Yeah.
And he never denied her. So from that day on, I've always known she existed.
Okay, so what exactly were you told about her?
I was just told that she was my sister. Basically my parents were married, her parents were married, so it was complicated. My dad was away at college. And she was conceived and then they went back to their significant others as if—
As nothing happened.
Yeah.
Okay.
And how did your dad get that picture of her?
I don't know that. Yeah, you don't know that. That is a question and it's always been a touchy subject because my dad is very sensitive.
Yeah.
I would assume from her mom.
So after you found out, did anyone ever bring her up again?
Me.
You, you and your own mom?
Yeah, every decade.
Yeah.
I bring her up to my dad again. I have a moment or something because she's never been a secret. So I've always felt comfortable even not to bring her up bring her out, but to at least talk to him about it. And I pretty much waited for the adults in this situation to fix it and they never did.
Yeah, so you said enough is enough.
Yeah.
And were you told that she didn't want anything to do with you?
I was told that at one stage in my life, probably in my mid-20s, 30s.
Uh-huh.
I was told that she did find out that she possibly was not her biological dad's and that she didn't wanna reach out to our family. She just wanted to keep things the way they were. And then when I met Kelly, I found out that was not true.
Wow.
So she had never said anything like that?
No, she questioned it like when she was like around 28 and it was kind of shut down and then just left at that. You know, my dad is still here and he's willing to have a relationship with his child. And if she's willing, that's what I want.
Yes, of course, of course. So what kind of relationship did you have with your dad? Was it close?
Oh, very close.
Yeah.
Yeah, I grew up as an only child. And me and my dad are very, very close. He's very protective over me. I'm a daddy's girl, self-proclaimed.
Yeah.
Yeah, so.
Were you afraid that contacting Kelly would hurt him?
Not hurt him. I was a little apprehensive that he might be angry. I didn't wanna be disrespectful or, you know, hurt anybody in my family.
Yeah.
But once God told me to do it, and I did it, I went to him immediately.
So this will be the first time that you're gonna actually meet Kelly, correct?
Yeah.
Well, I think Sean, that it's time for you to meet your potential sister for the very first time. Everyone, please welcome Kelly to the show.
Oh my God.
Oh my God, honey.
Oh.
Oh my God.
Oh, Jesus. Thank you, Lord.
Thank you.
Hi, beautiful. She looks like my grandma, you guys. My God.
I don't even know if y'all sisters yet, and y'all both got me over here tearing up and smiling. Just that interaction was so loving. What does this moment mean like for you?
I'm just very excited. I hope that this is gonna heal some stuff, so.
Yeah, yeah. What was it like for you when she messaged you 3 weeks ago?
First, everything just went silent. I read that message probably 3 times before I responded, but I did have like an overwhelming sense of calm. Like I wasn't like, "Oh, she's crazy." Like I was like, "This might be true.
Let's find out." Yeah, it was thoughtful, your message.
Yeah, it was.
I'm very protective over her already. She didn't even know me.
How does it make you feel when she's like, "I don't know you, but I feel protective of you." I mean, that's, it's good.
I mean, I've always been the big sister, so to have someone looking out for me, that—
You got a big sister now. You don't have to worry about that. You got a big sister now.
So did you ever suspect you might have another sibling out there?
I did see a picture of her probably when I was 22, but just as quickly as the idea was introduced, it was kind of dismissed, right? Got it.
The adults said, we don't wanna talk about that.
About this? Yeah, it was kind of like, well, what do you think? And I'm like, well, she kind of looks like me, but she also looks like maybe we just have fathers that look alike. And that was just kind of how we moved forward from that.
Got it, okay. And how did you process this news after you read it again? That's why I'm gonna go back to that.
I felt like God was giving me my opportunity to find out the truth 'cause I've had a question mark for 28 years. So now I get to get a period or an exclamation point. Wow. Okay then. Amen.
Yeah, have you told anyone about you taking this DNA test? So no one knows.
Wow.
So how did your mom tell you that you might have a sister?
We actually were watching a movie. The storyline of the movie was a little girl that was raised by a gentleman and then, who she thought was her father, but found out that he was not her biological father. And then her biological father came into the picture and was, suing for custody. And so my mom asked me, "Well, what do you think about that?" And I said, "Well, that's her dad. He raised her, you know, she loves him. That's who she knows. I mean, that's her father, but he will always be her dad." And then that's when she told me that there was a possibility that I was— Possibility.
Why do you think then?
I was pregnant with my first child. I don't know if that triggered something.
Oh, got it. Did you ever know any of Sean's family members?
Yes, I do know one of her relatives.
Really?
Who?
Um, aunt.
Okay, wow.
Okay, and how would your childhood have been different if you'd have known you had an older sister?
Oh, I think I would have had someone to lean on instead of having to, you know, things that I would have liked to go and talk to someone about. Yeah, you know, I had to hold those things in, learn how to transmute, you know, turn it into power where I could have— I wanted to be weak sometimes. I was always a strong one 'cause I was always the big sister, the big cousin, the older friend, you know?
Yeah. Well, look, if this is your sister, she's ready for let you let you go.
She is ready.
She's ready. She's ready.
She's ready.
I go to war over mine. I go to war over people that aren't even mine.
So my own, yeah, I love that one.
Since connecting with Sean, have you, I gotta ask you because she clearly feels an emotional connection. Do you feel an emotional connection?
I do. I feel like we have a lot a lot of similarities in our personalities and like our sense of humor, the kind of things we tolerate, don't tolerate. Like it's uncanny, you know?
It's my mini me.
Yeah.
That's my mini me in 3 weeks, yeah.
Wow, wow. Have you started to develop a relationship with Sean's father, William?
I had one conversation with him. I mean, he answered some questions for me. He gave me some information that I didn't know before. So, you know, if it's determined that he is my dad, I'm definitely open to speaking with him and building something with him. I want to make sure that my children are never questioning anything about their identity. I feel kind of blindsided by this, right? So I mean, I get it, people were young when decisions were made, but at some point you're not that age anymore, right? So I think a real conversation should've been had.
That is it. I know the man that raised you, your father, is he still in your life?
My daddy, absolutely.
He's in your life?
He is a wonderful, great man.
Oh, perfect.
Yes, a wonderful, great man.
How do you think he'll react?
Well, I know that he knows, right? So I don't know how he will react to know that I would know for sure. That's been kind of my, apprehension, you know, I want to know my truth, but I don't want my truth to injure anyone. Of course.
How does it make you feel knowing that Sean's father knew about you but never reached out?
I mean, I understand. I don't hold a grudge because I know that he was just trying to honor the wishes that were put in front of him. But at the same time— Fight. You didn't fight either.
Yeah, that makes sense. Well, listen everyone, we're getting a ping and it's from William, Kelly's potential father. So let's see what he has to say.
I always did feel that you were my daughter. I've never discounted feelings for you. I will welcome you as my daughter. Okay. Okay.
My dad.
Well, Sean, are you ready for the DNA truth?
I am.
You are?
50 years, yeah.
Well, I'm gonna have you come with me. So Sean, in this envelope is the truth if Kelly is your sister. For years, you have had this connection after seeing a photo as a young girl that you could have a sister out there. You've asked questions, it's been shut down, but she never left your soul. She never left your spirit. You always kept searching. And then only 3 weeks ago, finally, you saw a Facebook suggestion and your gut, God told you to reach out now. And 3 weeks later, you're on this stage with your potential sister Kelly. In this envelope, it will tell you if you're no longer an only child, if this is your sister. This is your truth to open, not mine. So good luck.
Okay.
I have watched this. This is so surreal 'cause I watch Karamo every day. Me and my dad. So it's like the big elephant in the room 'cause we know this is our story, but this is just like, This is her truth. I know who I am and I have my identity and I did this for her 'cause she deserves answers and we deserve to have a relationship. So I already know the answer, but I'll show y'all. Kelly is your biological mother. I knew you were mine, baby. I knew you were mine. I knew it. I knew it. This is for my daddy. This is for my dad. You don't have to worry anymore. You don't have to doubt. You don't have to feel any loss. You have nothing— nothing is taken away from you. Everything is given. So you just have another family. You have another family. You didn't lose anything, Kelly. Your dad was your dad, but you share a father with me. And you get to know us. You get to have a bond with us, honey. This is awesome. This is yours.
Kelly, how are you feeling?
My God.
I don't know. Yeah.
Yeah. My whole entire life just changed. Yeah, I know.
You're wanted, you're chosen. You got two dads, honey. You got two daddies. Nothing is broken, everything is gained. Everything is— She's a life coach. My sister is a life coach. How you gonna help somebody heal if you don't know who you are? She is going to thrive. She's gonna thrive now. We're gonna heal together.
Kelly, you know, because of the powerful work you do, Kelly, you know that you are allowed to feel your emotions. You're gonna have a moment where you're gonna need to grieve. Were you gonna be upset? Were you gonna be joyful? Were you gonna be confused? But what your sister did say to you is that nothing is gonna be taken away.
Nothing.
Only is given.
Only added.
You deserve to have your truth. She's no longer people you may know now. This is your sister.
She's mine. You couldn't shake me with a stick, baby.
Exactly, yeah. We wish you the best of luck.
Thank you, Karamo. Thank you so much. We love you, Karamo. Thank you so much for having us. Hi.
How you doing?
I'm fine. She's ours, Daddy.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, we knew that.
All right. Hi. Hey, how you doing, darling? I'm OK. I'm processing. Yeah, that's good. I kind of thought this was coming, but I know for sure now.
So new beginnings, Dad. See you soon.
Love you. Bye-bye. I love you.
I love you too, honey.
You are chosen.
