All right, friends, so Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and as we start preparing for the festive day, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite side dishes to eat at Thanksgiving, which is candy yams. This is a dish that I just love, love, love. Listen, one of my favorite Thanksgiving memories is always when my mother brings out the candied yams, I am a sweet tooth person that I just clamor to the table and I'm like devouring it. I don't want meat, I don't want anything, I just want something sweet and savory, and that's what candied yams does for me. And it's also a simple enough dish that you can actually do at home, you know what I mean? So let's go ahead and get this started. So step 1, get you a large baking dish and spread the yams evenly in the bottom of the dish. Thanksgiving is a great time to like actually do things with family members or kids that you might be having issues with. It's a great way of connecting. Listen, some of the most amazing healing moments in my family happen when we're all in the kitchen cooking. That's like a memory of mine. Like I had an aunt and another aunt that weren't getting along. We got them in the kitchen. You had me in the middle with the cooking. Baby, by the end of it, everyone was friends again, okay? So you're like mashing the yams. You're talking about your problems. You're like, girl, yeah, you made me upset, girl. Yeah, you made me upset too, girl. But oh, we can heal this. Oh yeah, we can heal this. I killed this girl. Look at that, that's how you do this stuff. All right, so listen, you mash them up. All right, step 2, you have to heat a stick of butter, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and salt in a medium saucepan. So look, we have the butter that I have already melted right here. We also have the nutmeg, but also inside of this I already put the salt and the cinnamon so that it's all together. And then you just put that all over your yams. Ooh, I'm getting excited! Okay, here we go. We're just gonna put all of this inside of there, right? This is really great. And now step 3 is to stir in the vanilla when the butter is fully melted. Ours was already fully melted, so now we're gonna take our vanilla and we're gonna stir it in. Oh my gosh. Step 4 is to pour the mixture over the yams and use a wooden spoon to stir stir the yams and make sure that everything is evenly coated, and then you sprinkle on some marshmallows on top. Okay, where do we put the brown sugar? My bad. Listen, go back, y'all. So when I was putting everything else, I've got to put the brown sugar in there, which is the most important, important part, is putting in the brown sugar. So listen, when you go into cooking, you make mistakes, you go back, you put sugar back in, but it's okay because that's how you find out what you love. You know, some of the favorite things that I love to cook during Thanksgiving is I'm like a 5-layer baked mac and cheese type of guy. I'm also a big like greens type of guy. I can do like a collard greens like you cannot imagine. So before you put this in the oven, you're gonna put some marshmallows on this. Then you put it in the oven for 20 minutes at 400. So voilà, what it should come out with is looking, can you see this everyone? A little taste test. Okay, ready? Mm-hmm. She cute, y'all.
