A counselor pushes back on a man's parental role toward his ex-wife's adult daughter, who calls her a second mother. The real issue: he's trying to parent someone he has no biological tie to. Better communication could reshape it into something mutual and respectful instead.
You were in such a dad mode before, dad protector mode, all these things. She called your ex-wife her second mother. So if you call my ex-wife your second mother, unconsciously, what does that make you, brother or dad?
She knows I'm the only father she's ever had.
But you're not her father.
No, I'm not.
And she's not your daughter.
Yeah.
And she's not required to call you. And she's not required to do the things that you want.
Yeah.
But I think with better communication, maybe you all can mold this relationship to something that's more supportive for each other. You're not a bad guy, you're not a bad woman. Y'all siblings that are going through a lot and are trying to figure out how to grow and change as the world is changing around y'all. But y'all do have something strong within each other and just remember that, never let go of that, all right?
