My Cousin Scammed Me Out of $4400! | KARAMO

In this KARAMO episode, host Karamo mediates a heated dispute between Perry, a 26‑year‑old woman, and her 34‑year‑old cousin Keith, who sold her a used car. Perry alleges that she paid a total of $4,400 between February 4 and February 13, 2024, to secure a vehicle she hoped would be a Lexus but was instead given a damaged, dirty BMW‑type car with broken glass, a cracked headlight and a foul interior. She presents receipts, a receipt found in the glove compartment showing Keith bought the car for $1,000, and social‑media posts suggesting Keith used her money for a Disneyland vacation. Keith initially denies wrongdoing, claims his intentions were pure, and says he operates as an auction‑based car reseller, not a dealership. After prolonged back‑and‑forth, Keith confesses to pocketing $1,000 of the payments and agrees to hand over the car’s title, which he had previously withheld. Perry accepts the title as a step toward closure, though she remains without a functional vehicle and still bears repair costs. The segment ends with Karamo summarizing the distinction between family‑business and business‑with‑family, wishing both parties well.

So you were scammed by your own cousin?
Yes, I was scammed by my cousin out of $4,400. I, yes, I needed to get a vehicle. I was trying to get from point A to point B. I was out of a car, I was busting it 3 hours one way, 3 hours back home. And he ended up delivering a shit car.
So what did you ask Keith for exactly then?
I originally asked him for a Lexus vehicle. That's one of my dream cars, it's all over my vision boards. I wanted a Lexus. He started showing me cars of Alexis and that's what I wanted, but he said that that was mainly out of my price range. It started off right there and I gave him my first payment of $1,200 to get the car. But as you can see, he's saying $2,500. So it was still in my price range. I even did research on my end to make sure that it was still in my price range, but he told me it wasn't. So I said, okay. I'm gonna go smoothly 'cause I know he has to get his part of the cut as well. And let me see what else I can get out of it.
So you were okay with him getting a cut because you were like, I'm gonna get it.
You know, that's the thing. As a car dealership, you get a percentage of it. I get that.
Yeah.
But if I tell you what I wanted. Even with family? Yes, even with family. Okay. I thought it was gonna be a, you help me, I help you, you're family.
You know what I mean?
Got it, got it.
I'm making more people. Okay, that part I get. Okay, got it. So when did you start to notice something wasn't right?
When we set up a date to go and meet up, that's when I felt eerie. I wasn't hearing from him. That's when he ghosted me. And some other guy picked up the phone. Oh, I don't know who you calling for. I don't know, I don't know nothing. I'm like, hey, I'm just looking for my cousin, you know? Well, I don't know your cousin. I just had this phone. And I didn't hear from him after that ever since.
Wow. So we have a timeline of your interactions with Keith. Let me take a look at this. Okay, so January 30th, you called Keith. February 4th, you sent $1,200 to hold it. February 5th through 7th, you sent two $1,400 payments. And February 13th, you sent the last payment. So you very quickly sent the money. It wasn't like there was a lot of time.
Yeah, I was moving quickly 'cause I needed a car.
I was busting it. So then by February 24th, you were ghosted by Keith. And then February 28th, Keith drops off the busted car. Wow.
And he dropped off the busted car because I have a spicy Capricorn mother that end up finding out what happened. And she didn't like what happened and she told him to fix it and be a man about it and fix your mistakes.
And so she said drop the car off.
Yes.
And then it's still, so that's why he rushed and got something is what you're saying?
Yeah, I don't think his intentions was originally to give me a car and that's what I'm here to find out.
Got it. You sent in a video and pictures of the car. I wanna see this car that he gave you. Okay, so this the car. Okay, I see. So scratched up.
It was really, really bad. It was dirty and inside stink. Sink in the inside. I was really scared to open the trunk because I'm like, oh my gosh, what is going on? I don't know what he was doing in this car at all.
Yeah, so it was— okay, so I see it. So it's like— oh, that's on the inside. Okay.
I'm giving you all this money and then I have to replace things to fix it? Yeah, it doesn't make any sense.
Okay.
Yeah, because that— you're gonna need a whole new paint job for that. Exactly. The busted front light, you're gonna pay for that.
It was glass in the inside shattered all over the place. Like, I don't know if a window or something got busted and he replaced it, but it was bad.
So you told my producer that you found evidence that Keith lied to you?
Yes, I actually found a receipt in the glove compartment of February 4th, the first payment I gave him. On that same day, he went to go buy this car for only $1,000. And I was still giving him money. Money.
So what do you think he did with the money you gave him?
I seen pictures on Facebook, him taking his family to Disneyland. Disneyland's not cheap. So you use my money to do your own thing. You obviously needed it more than me. Okay, granted, take the money, but I need the truth at the end of the day.
Okay, when was the last time you spoke to your cousin?
That last day when I was going to link with him. I didn't even speak to him after that.
February 28th?
Yeah, I didn't even.
Okay, so it's been a while.
I didn't even hear from him after that.
Well, I think it's time to hear Keith's side of the story. So everyone please welcome Keith to the show.
Karamo, shut up.
Why y'all booing Keith? You don't know his side of the story yet. Yeah. So what do you feel? Welcome to the show.
What's up?
How do you feel about what you just heard?
I'm flabbergasted.
Okay.
At this point, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
I'm flabbergasted.
Okay. Why are you flabbergasted?
Because my intentions was pure. I haven't seen her since I was like 14 years old.
Yeah.
This is my first time seeing her.
I haven't seen him in physical.
In person.
In forever.
In person.
Yeah. And that's what hurt the most. Yeah.
Okay.
In person.
Because it's been years.
Yeah, it's been a long time.
Yeah, but she still feels hurt by this.
I feel hurt too.
What do you feel hurt about?
I feel hurt because I sell cars, right? I did a lot of time in prison. I got out, got me a business, a good business.
A scamming business.
That's the first, this is the first customer I ever had a problem with.
And it's family. 'Cause you a scammer. Come on, man. You a scammer.
I got you off the bus and put you in a BMW. I'm a scammer?
Listen, I'm trying to, I'm trying to.
How am I a scammer?
I'm trying to, Watch my words, but you a scammer at the end of the day.
How am I a scammer if I got you off the bus and put you in a BMW? Any car you buy used is gonna have problems.
Explain that $1,000.
You got a key scratch and a broken light on a brand new BMW.
And I gave you that.
Can I tell you what happened? 'Cause you never called me, you had your mom call me.
Oh, but you told them that I called you.
You had your mother call me. No, you had your mom.
You told them that I called you.
You just showed the message. That's the last time I talked to you.
You said that Perrie and her mom disrespected you.
Yeah, because, well, not her. She didn't disrespect me, I ain't gonna lie, it wasn't her. Her mom—
You are 34 years old, I am 26 years old.
Okay, well, let me—
You are an adult, you are the adult. You're not an adult? You're an adult and I am an adult. But you are the oldest. Okay. I haven't seen you in so long and I come to you because you're family.
Absolutely.
And like I said, you don't do family like that. So I'm helping you, you help me.
Do you like what?
You scammed me.
How did I scam you?
You scammed me completely out of that.
Okay, let me tell you.
All of those receipts, the receipt on there, when you look it up, That doesn't even exist.
It doesn't matter.
Scammer.
What company do I work for? My company don't do this.
Well, this one in particular is saying that the paperwork says you paid not even $2,000 for the car, which is crazy.
Okay, now let me tell you this. I buy and sell cars from an auction. The car can be priced at $3,000. Doesn't mean that's what it's gonna go for. If she say I want this and this and that, it can go lower than that, it can go higher. Now, I got her, can I talk please? I got her a Honda. When I got her the Honda, the whole right side was crashed. I didn't know 'cause I bought it online. I didn't know till I got down there.
And you wasn't communicating with her?
So I didn't wanna give her that. So I'm like, all right, I had the BMW. She, I need a car, keep calling me. Look, I'm gonna give you, I didn't wanna even give her the BMW 'cause it was worth way more than what she gave me. You feel what I'm saying?
Why didn't you meet up with her on February 24th?
February 24th, I didn't even know she, I was supposed to meet her up on that 'cause she was coming down. Days before that I lost my phone. She talking about I knew somebody and all that. Why would I, I just won't answer. Why would I ask somebody to answer my phone?
Yeah, yeah, you did. You had somebody answer the phone because guess what? How they contacted you was that same number that you blocked me from.
Absolutely.
Exactly.
Absolutely. That doesn't make sense. Do you know I called her?
That don't make no sense. Yeah, okay.
So did you go on vacation? 'Cause she said you went to Disneyland.
Yeah, I went on vacation.
That's the vacation I went on. You told me that you couldn't go to Vegas.
It doesn't matter if I was in Vegas. What does that mean? You think that was with your money? You came with me to Vegas?
Vegas is 2 hours away. But you went to Disneyland too. Disneyland is not cheap at the end of the day. Disneyland.
How you know I went?
Disneyland is not cheap.
You don't even know me. How you know where I went?
Oh, I don't know you now.
No, you don't.
You right.
I haven't seen or talked to you in years.
But you posted something on Facebook though. I don't even post on Facebook. No, I don't.
You do.
You absolutely do. At the end of the day, I'm a twin. My twin ended up finding out what happened. I didn't tell anybody what happened. It wasn't so much as embarrassment. This was the first time in my life that I've hit rock bottom where I did not know what my next step was. And I was so like, I don't know what to do.
'Cause you've given up all your money.
Yeah, like that was everything I saved up. I worked hard for that money. So I told him he needs to fix it. He needs to be a man about it. My mom was so hurt for me. She was mad as a mama should be. Why didn't you contact me? Why didn't you contact me? I couldn't get in touch with him.
How you couldn't get in touch with me? And your mama can't?
How has this affected the family?
Listen, the family was, I haven't seen them since I was a kid. I haven't talked to them at all. They called me, are you selling cars? If I wanted to scam somebody, wouldn't I go, hey, they called me. I'm minding my own business.
You talking about we not in your family, but you over here, okay cousin, I got this car for you, don't worry about it cousin, I got you.
Okay cousin, no, no, but you just said that though. I don't even have a relationship with y'all. You contact me for a car. If I wanted to scam you, why would I just, why would I post it?
You obviously did, 'cause where's the rest of my money?
Oh my God.
Because you only spent the $1,000 on a car. So please tell me what happened.
Let me tell you what happened.
Because my mom gave you a whole week to make sure the stakes—
I think it's time to unlock the truth.
I think it's time to unlock the truth.
Yeah.
Well, let's unlock the truth. All right, here we go.
You a grown man. This is ridiculous.
Perry, you want to know if Keith used any of the car money for himself? Keith actually confessed to pocketing $1,000 after the entire transaction was completed. We have an evidence bag where he, my producer tell me you wrote a letter where you said how you took the $1,000. Thank you, Rob.
You obviously was wrong at the end of the day.
How was I wrong?
You just said you was gonna gimme some money for getting it. But that was your intentions. At the end of the day, like I said. You came to me. Are you gonna let me talk? You just end up gonna get some money for buying the car, so I don't know what this is. At the end of the day, you're a car dealer. At any car dealership, they get a percentage. But at the same time—
I'm not a dealership. I buy and sell cars from the auction. I'm not a dealership.
You're a scammer at the end of the day.
Okay, well, I'm a scammer then.
Obviously, you scammed me out of $4,400.
Scammer here.
Don't ever go to him for no damn car. Don't go to him.
So it's the only problem I ever had selling cars.
You were looking for closure, and it sounds like he at least confessed to taking that money. The $1,000, does that give you some type of closure knowing that, okay, he's saying I did take this?
It gives me closure, but am I still okay with the fact that I'm asked out, still out of a car? Because guess what? That car he still gave me, I still gotta fix it. And at that, he was being so spiteful, he didn't even give me a title. So I'm out of a car completely. So do you have the title right there?
Yeah, I got the title. I didn't give it to him 'cause her mama got to talking that police shit.
You just blocked? Yeah, there's messages between my mom This is his confession.
'Cause you took 25% profit, which is a significant profit for a family member. So would you at this point—
Keep saying a family member, it's business.
So would you be willing to give, if it's business and you're saying you held onto the title, then you're in the wrong.
No, I didn't hold onto the title. I held onto the title because I blocked her mama. I didn't hold onto it like, oh, I'm gonna keep her title.
So would you give her the title?
Yeah, I'd give her the title.
So you'll give her the title?
I'm giving her the title.
And you have the, where's the car? I bought it for mama, not her. Where's the car?
I don't know, she got it.
Do you have the car?
The car, yes, it's not moving, but still in possession where it was.
There's honesty here. You've gotten some confession, you've gotten some truth, and he's also willing to give the title. Would that help you to be able to move forward so that you can get to the next steps and get with— 'Cause I understand as a young woman how hurt you are that you're saying like, I tried, I gave my all, I did this, you understand? And so I understand the pain for you and that you're saying like, but he's saying, I confess and I'm giving you the title.
Yep.
Would that help you to move forward?
That would definitely help me to move forward. At the end of the day, that was my intentions on coming outta here. I wasn't coming out here to play victim or anything. Honestly, I didn't even wanna share tears 'cause he doesn't even deserve my tears. At the end of the day, he doesn't.
What we know now is going on semantics of then is not gonna help you out. What we've heard now is the title can come and you've accepted that he would help you and you've said if it's genuine, that you'll accept the help. I think this is the way that we leave everyone else out of this and we go back to square one where y'all were communicating. Because there's a difference. There's family business and business with family. Those are two different things. So in this moment, be in the business. Show her like, I have integrity, I'm gonna do this, okay? Got you. All right, I wish y'all both of the best luck. I'm glad you got your answers and I wish you good luck.
Thank you, Karamo.
Best luck as well, all right? All right, make sure to come back next time, friends, so we can keep talking and growing. I love you all.
