My Cousin Stole $1400 From Me While I Was In Jail! | KARAMO

In this episode of KARAMO, host Karamo mediates a heated family dispute between Brandi and her cousin Demajae over a missing $1,400. Brandi, who was briefly jailed after a police stop, had given the cash to Demajae for safekeeping. Upon her release she discovered most of the money was gone, leading to accusations that Demajae stole it. Brandi describes the betrayal, loss of trust, and the emotional fallout, while Demajae vehemently denies any wrongdoing, offers to take a lie‑detector test, and claims she has her own money and a daughter. Karamo probes both sides, asks about prior trust, the impact on their relationship, and whether reconciliation is possible. He also suggests that the theft might involve a third party—someone who could exploit the family rift to hide their own involvement. The conversation ends with both parties expressing lingering hurt, tentative apologies, and a promise to return for further discussion.

Okay, so walk me through that day. What really happened?
What really happened was, it was just a regular day. I'm not gonna lie, I'm not thinking I'm finna lose my money. But so my cousin, it was me, my cousin, her boyfriend, and we was finna go get me a car. I had $1,400 to go put down on a car. I was 17 years old. So they start fighting and we got pulled over. Police came, pulled us over. Basically, I had a warrant, so I had to go to jail. They got caught on them, but I ended up having to go to jail because, you know.
'Cause you had the warrant.
I had the warrant.
Yeah.
So I had asked my cousin just to hold the money until I get outta jail.
Yeah.
Why not? I trust you, I love you. Like, I—
Yeah.
I get back home the same day and I asked her where the money at. She told me, it was like, it's in the car, 'cause it's like, you know, I put it in there, I hid it for you. I go down in the car, it's like $400 or $500 left. Then I go back in the house and I'm just asking like, Did anybody touch my money? Like, where's the money at? Like, y'all know I'm finna go get me a car with this money.
Where's the money?
Yeah.
So— 'Cause it's one thing if it all would've came up missing, but clearly somebody took some and left some behind.
Like, yeah, they took some. They didn't take, like, that's what I'm saying. Like, I know ain't nobody breaking a car and take everything. It ain't no outside person. It's somebody inside.
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah. You knew that she knew about the money because you gave it to her. But what makes you suspicious that she's the one who took it?
I don't know how to say it. Like, I'm not suspicious of who took it, but you only gave it to you. Like, are you the only person in the world who said, I only gave it to you. I'm not talking to nobody else about it. So it's not me being suspicious, it's just common sense.
Yeah, okay then. Did you ever catch her in a lie before this?
I mean, not really. Like, that's my cousin. Like, I really don't really lie to my cousin.
Yeah.
And if she do shit, she be lying, I be lying too.
So I don't—
she be lying too. So I don't really, it ain't like—
It's nothing like you're like—
Yeah, like you just lied again. Like, it ain't like it's just steady something happening. It was just out the blue.
Got it. Have you ever doubted Demajae's honesty before this?
No.
So why does an incident affect your relationship?
It's weird as hell. Like, I trust you. Like, you lost my trust. It's just, that's what it is.
So the trust is broken now?
It's not really like the trust broken 'cause I like, you know, it's been a while. So like I made the money back. I end up getting me a car. So, you know, I put it in the past 'cause we family.
But you wanna know the truth?
I do wanna know the truth. Like, I'm not gonna lie. Like, I know everybody kept saying like, I ain't take this, I ain't take that. Like, where the rest of the money at then? Like, where's my money if nobody touched it?
What has what has what was your relationship before all this happened?
We thick as thieves.
Thick as thieves.
Mama's twin sister.
Funny you say thick as thieves when somebody stole your money. Okay, okay.
Karamo, you.
Well, when do you start feeling something change between you? Right after this?
Yeah, when it happened, I was everybody. Like I felt some type of way.
Of course you should. You work hard for your money, trying to get yourself a car, and all of a sudden your money gone. I'm gonna be some way feel some ways about it too.
It's not gonna be just me just looking past it.
Got it. So how does she get in your business? 'Cause you talking about producers that—
Oh, okay. So you know how cousins is. I tell you, then you banding against me with my mama now. Like, what the fuck is that? With the rest of the family, you banding against me. Like, it's just me versus all y'all. But I thought it was like, you know.
At least you had your cousin on your side.
Yeah, at least I got my cousin on my side. Like, I ain't got nobody for real, for real. That's how you making it seem. But it's just like when she come, she like tell me like, no, it ain't like that. It ain't like that.
But is it?
So is it a situation where you feel like your love has never been returned?
Not my love ain't been in terms, it's like, you know, halfway, like, halfway fuck, like halfway do this. Like you don't all the way like me. Like you don't, you know?
I get that, I get that. So you wanna get back to that old place?
Yeah, like I wanna like, this, I look at like my sister. Like I do not wanna be in bad terms with you. Like we getting older, I'm getting older, you getting older. Like I don't wanna—
So we're here to find out the truth. If you find out that she was part of stealing that money, is your relationship over?
It's not gonna be the same. I'm never coming back around, you know?
Well, I think it's time to hear Demajae's side of the story. So everyone please welcome Demajae to the show.
How you doing?
Hey, I'm doing fine. Good, thank you for being here. So did you know that Brandy had $40 on her that day?
No.
You did not know?
Okay.
She gave you the money to put in the car?
No, I never knew it was no money in my car.
So she's saying, so, 'cause her story is that she gave you money to hold on while she's getting arrested and then you said it was in the glove compartment.
Yeah, when we got back home.
When you got back home?
Yes.
The $1,400, I never knew about.
So the $1,400, so then, so I'm gonna ask you point blank, did you steal the money?
No.
Okay, you didn't steal the money?
No. What I'm stealing her money for? What I'm stealing her money for? I make my own money. I do her.
Got it.
I have a daughter. We stay together. What the fuck am I stealing from you for?
Got it.
What I'm stealing for? I don't have to take nothing from nobody when I got my own money.
When I came back, shit was gone.
But I didn't take it though.
And I never took your shit. All right.
Take that up with your mother.
Take that up with everybody. I told her to take that up with your mother.
No, you not taking that shit up with me, baby. I promise you not. I promise you not. 'Cause I ain't gotta steal shit from nobody.
So where is it?
Yeah. Oh, okay.
Oh, me too. And me too.
Yeah. I've been hurt when it first happened, But I told her I didn't steal it.
That was it? You just said point blank, I didn't steal it?
Yeah, I took a lie detector test and I'm ready for it to come back. Like, that's simple. Okay.
How did it make you feel to be accused?
Of stealing from my cousin? This is my first cousin. What? That make me feel bad?
Yeah.
I'm grown. What I gotta steal your money for? I got my own money. Like I keep saying, I have a daughter. I don't want nobody taking shit from me and my baby, so why the fuck take anything from anybody else?
Got it, okay. Have you ever been accused of stealing her things before? No.
Never?
This is the first time I ever heard this.
Okay then. And then why do you think she accused you?
Probably 'cause we was in my car and we got stopped by the police in my car.
Got it.
And I was fighting with my baby daddy on the side street and the police got called. I still never thought the money, I still didn't think she had $1,400 in her car.
Yeah.
In my car, I mean. Got it. I didn't think that.
So she's saying you didn't give her money to put in the glove compartment. She's saying you put it there.
I didn't put it through, I gave the money to her.
Okay. So why is it that she does not know that you gave her the money?
I don't know. I gave it to me.
I didn't touch no $1,400.
So did she give you anything as she was getting arrested to say, hold onto this?
Not no money.
Okay.
So where I just had the money? I had it in the glove compartment the whole time.
Where was your money? You told me that the money was in the glove compartment when you came from jail. That's when I knew your money was in the glove compartment. I never touched no $1,400. So I don't even know what you talking about. Like, can you please, Fast forward, what the fuck is you talking about with this $1,400? I don't gotta steal shit from nobody. And I'm gonna keep saying this shit. Where's the test results?
Okay, where's the test results?
Let's do it. I don't gotta steal shit from nobody.
What was your relationship like before this incident?
We was cool, we was close, but all that shit, I ain't even gonna sit here and play with nobody.
So if it comes back that you've been vindicated, that you didn't steal from her, do you think there's a path for you to rebuild this relationship?
I mean, I don't know.
You don't know?
Nope.
It's not a no, so that's good.
I don't know.
It's at least not a no. Has Brandi been telling your family that you stole money from her?
I'm not sure. I didn't know nothing about that.
So she keeps saying that nobody is messing with her. Like, is that true? She says she feels like she has no family on her side.
I don't think that's true. I just think she being a bitch.
Bitch, you the bitch. So.
So you feel like her behavior and her attitude is why people are staying away?
Yeah.
Okay. She says she feels like sometimes you gang up on her, like you take their sides and not support her. Do you feel that way?
So you think that I'm finna get in the middle of family issues? Like you think I'm finna take anybody's side? I'm not taking nobody's side.
Got it.
Simple.
Got it, got it.
'Cause when it's me, nobody taking my side when it come to me getting into it with them.
Got it.
So no, I'm not gonna chime in and take nobody's side.
Got it, okay. And you agreed to take this lie detector test because you want your name clear?
Yeah.
Understandable. After results, if she's found not to have done anything, will you apologize to her?
No, I'm not. I'm just playing.
No, I'm about to say, I'm sorry.
I'm just playing.
Okay, well listen, let's get to the truth. Are you ready for this?
Mm-hmm.
All right, did you steal $1,400 from Brandi? And you said no. And Demaje, you're telling the truth. The next one, which is very important as well. Did you help anyone else steal $1,400 from Brandy? You said no. And you're telling the truth.
I told you I don't gotta steal no money from you or nobody. I get my own money. I don't have to steal no shit. $1,400. I have a daughter. I got my own shit going on. I don't have to steal shit from nobody. I don't let nobody take shit from me 'cause I have a daughter. So I'm not stealing $1,400 from nobody. I don't even like people who steal out the store. So stop playing with me. You brought me all the way out here for this shit.
Girl, well, somebody took it 'cause at the end of the day, I ain't have it. Thank you.
So the truth is somebody took it.
Thank you.
But I think what we're seeing is the same way you were hurt, I think it's important to acknowledge that your cousin didn't do it. She didn't.
She didn't do it, and I'm gonna apologize. I'm not gonna lie. There's. I'm close with my cousin, so yeah. Make her feel like it's making me feel some type of way. I'm not gonna lie. Okay.
I do feel so when you go backstage, you'll give her that.
I am gonna apologize. Like I'm not gonna lie. I feel some type of way because I not gonna lie, Karamo. The money was left in her car, and my still missing. So got a lot of text text me too.
I believe. So let me tell you. I believe. No, I believe. I truly do. We all know what that's like. When you plan up, you save, you got it, you ready. We know what that feel like. What I will tell you is I'm sure that somebody else went into her car, saw some money, and probably thought it was hers.
Mm.
Because she do hair and thought like, let me just take a little bit of money out, and didn't realize that they were taking money from you. That's what I would assume. And that's why she was so shocked, 'cause she like, I didn't even know the money was in there. And now that we know she didn't do it or help anyone else do it, I would start looking at some of those other people that maybe y'all both say gang up on y'all because some, one of those people knows something and has used you two being divided to make sure that there's no attention on him.
Yes.
Because it's very easy for the person who did it to have y'all continue to argue because then y'all never watching them.
No.
So just pay attention. Pay attention. Especially now that y'all gonna solve this, pay attention to the person who don't like that y'all are back together. 'Cause I promise you, whoever that person is has something to do with your money. I promise you.
I love you.
All right, well listen, good luck, all right?
Okay.
Make sure to come back next time, friends, so we keep talking and growing. I love you all.
I love you too.
All right, love you.
