My Mom Kicked Me Out For Her New Man! | KARAMO

In this Karamou episode, host Karamo mediates a volatile family conflict involving mother Wendy, her adult son LJ, and daughter Lexi. LJ recounts a pattern of Wendy’s short‑term romantic relationships, including a recent boyfriend of only four months who prompted Wendy to evict him from the house. He describes past trauma: a violent altercation with a former boyfriend that led to his arrest in high school, and his current habit of sleeping with a gun under his pillow as a coping mechanism. Lexi explains she feels forced into a co‑parenting role, constantly being called upon to mediate between her mother and brother, and is exhausted by being caught in the middle. Wendy defends herself, claiming she never puts a man before her children, yet admits to seeking personal time away from relationships and acknowledges the family’s dysfunction. Karamo highlights the need for clear boundaries, recommends counseling for LJ, and urges Wendy to stop relying on Lexi as a mediator, emphasizing that the family must stop the cycle of conflict and establish healthier dynamics.

Lexi says she has been caught in the middle of her brother and mother's issues and fears all the fighting will tear their family apart. Let's hear what her brother LJ had to say about the situation. Take a look.
To be honest, I feel like my mother's done being a parent. Right now I live with my mom, but I was planning to move out in June. A few weeks ago, my mom changed everything on me. She told me that I gotta be out by the end of the month. She's trying to move in with a dude she only knew for 4 months. My mama got bad taste in men. One guy she was seeing actually beat me up one time, and I got arrested for it. I was in high school. The cops came to my school. They basically pulled me out of class and put me in cuffs. To be honest, I got a lot of resentment towards my mama. She's the one who brought that man into my life. Now, once again, I feel like my mama's put another guy over me, and she's only known him for 4 months. She's known me for 20 years.
Listen, we'll meet LJ shortly, but let's start with Lexi to hear her side of the story. So everyone please welcome Lexi to the show. So I was taking notes on what your brother was saying in that video, and it sounds like he feels like your mother puts men before him. Do you feel that way?
In a way. She has her own way of doing so, I guess.
Yes or no?
Kind of both. It's like she wants to have a relationship 'cause she doesn't want to be alone, but at the same time, she's not gonna not take care of her son.
Okay, got it, got it, okay. How are you caught in the middle of all this?
Anytime they have any type of issues or anything, I get called. Like when she feels like he needs to be disciplined, she calls me, or somebody needs to talk to him, she calls me.
Or— 'Cause she can't deal with it, so she's like, deal with your brother.
Yeah.
Got it. How does your mother's relationship affect you and LJ's relationship?
I think when we was younger, we kind of like fought together against them.
Yeah.
We kind of had to grow up faster than what we should have because we became her protectors kind of thing.
Got it. So why did you call the show?
'Cause I'm tired of being in the middle of it. I'm tired of me and her getting into it because they can't get their relationship together. She can't get her son on track.
Was LJ sleeping with a gun underneath his pillow?
Yes. Yes.
So your brother had a gun underneath his pillow?
Yeah, it's my mama gun. She called me and she was like, girl, why the fuck is LJ sleeping with a gun under his pillow? Call your brother. Of course I call him like, are you dumb? Like, why are you sleeping with a gun under your pillow? That's not even your gun. You don't have no ops. You live in a gated community. Like, why are you acting hard body? His response literally was, stay ready, ain't gotta get ready. What are you getting ready for? What do you need to stay ready for? Like, you live in the suburbs. You know what I mean? I don't know. I don't know.
Is she kicking him out right now?
She said she is. She said she finna move without him.
Yeah.
And she, but she's going back to her mom's house though.
So she's about to move without him right now?
Yeah, that's what she said.
Okay, where's she going?
To a room with somebody.
A man?
Not a man right now, no.
But is there a man in the picture?
There is.
There is another man in the picture, okay. Well listen, I think it's time to talk to LJ. So everyone please welcome him to the show.
Hey LJ.
How you doing? Welcome to the show.
Thank you.
So tell me, why do you think you're having issues with your mom?
I think I just got a lot of anger.
Anger?
From past relationships that's built up for years. I don't know what else to do with it.
So why were you sleeping with a gun?
I don't know, just, I don't know, just because I know my mom is scary and you never know what's gonna happen in life 'cause life is unpredictable.
Yeah, yeah.
I'd rather be the one who take charge than rather her do it.
Yeah, okay. Talk to me 'cause something's going on. You're feeling emotional right now. What's making you feel emotional?
Everything in life.
Yeah? So you're feeling a little, you feel a little unsure and a little insecure right now, right?
I feel like I don't know who I am. Like I tried to be in the streets, that didn't work out at all. It's like I don't know what to do anymore.
Yeah. Have you had a lot of issues with your mother's partners in the past? Like what?
One of 'em, I got arrested at school one time 'cause of one. So, so momma went to Florida and I was staying with somebody, but I came back to the house that morning to get my ID. But we had our own room at the time. We came upstairs, but at that time the bus is coming down the street. And I said, "I'll come." And so I ran in the house to go upstairs, get my ID, and come back downstairs. But he saw me and got mad. Next thing you know, he's choking me. So we started fighting. But then I went to school. One of the principals came and got me from class. I was going to lunch. Next thing you know, I walked in the office. It was like 5 cops right there. But it was like, then the next thing you know, I was going to the police station out of nowhere.
You got arrested in school?
Yes, in front of everybody.
How old were you?
I was in high school. I think it was like my freshman or sophomore year.
Freshman or sophomore. So you're like 15 years old and you're getting taken outta school in handcuffs because of an altercation you had at home with your mother's boyfriend.
I feel like she blamed me for it 'cause I can't have my shoes upstairs. But if I took my shoes off, then go upstairs to come back and put my shoes back on, I would've missed the bus and I already didn't like him. So I was not, refused to let him take me to school that day. I refused to.
Yeah, got it.
But like she blamed me for it.
Do you know about this situation?
I have a problem with this because I feel like LJ caused that. He was nitpicky all the time. Like—
The boyfriend?
Yes, all the time. Before Mama had even left to go out of town, she had set it up to where LJ didn't even have to go back home. You feel me? And I think that LJ took the extra mile to mouth off to him and he pranked out.
I didn't even say nothing to him. I like, I didn't say shit to him.
It was a, we had a Ring camera and it was a video. You hear LJ mumbling something something and then you see like, what'd you say to me? LJ is like, I didn't say nothing, I didn't say nothing. And then he started attacking them and then they tussling in the yard.
So angel's advocate here, a 15-year-old mumbles under their breath, which is normal, and an adult who's not his parent attacks him. Yeah, but the thing is, I just have a different perspective on that, like, you know what I mean?
Like, yeah, I would see that, I could see that Do you still have resentment towards your mom over that situation?
Yeah, I feel like after a couple arguments and after she put him out for a good 30 days, I feel like that was a good time for her to kick him out or do something, you feel me? I lowkey feel like he caused, 'cause my sister, Drew, she's like my only, like my best friend, bro. That's the only person I had. And he was leaving the reason she left. That's when he started my anger, 'cause I had nobody else. Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you know that he feels like you're the only person he has?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, you did know that?
Yeah, I felt real guilty when I left.
Yeah.
But I couldn't take it. I was gonna go to jail.
Yeah, you couldn't take it outta there.
Yeah. She said, "I'd rather you go to jail than you leave me any day." 'Cause I still, you still gotta chase to see me regardless.
So when you think about this, you said you had to leave because you would go to jail and your brother's telling you he has a gun beneath his pillow. So the same thing he's feeling with you, he just processes it differently.
Yeah.
Well, let's hear what your mother Wendy has to say about all this. Everyone, please welcome Wendy to the show.
Ooh, Lord. That's my girl, y'all. That's my girl.
Hi, Wendy.
Hi.
How are you?
Thank you for being here. Thank you for being here.
Hey, Wendy. Hey, Mommy.
You allowed to call your mom by her first name?
Yes.
Oh, okay.
I'm her co-parent, so we in this together. We partners now.
Is that true? You feel like she's your co-parent? She's allowed to call you by your first name?
They call me that when they're irritated with me. I definitely have expressed I don't like it. They know that I don't like it. They know that.
So why you do it?
Because she's Wendy. She acts like Wendy. So Wendy is what it is.
So when she puts you in situations where you feel like we're both equal as adults, you feel like I wanna show you that we both equals.
Yeah.
Okay.
Ooh.
Okay. So were you aware that your past relationships has affected LJ this much?
I was aware that it has impacted him. However, I just recently learned that he holds like a bitterness with me. About it, but I also feel there's a lot of things that are not 100% truth that I just heard back there.
Please tell me, I wanna get your side of this story as well.
So number one, I have not ever, ever put no man before you guys. And you guys know that.
Yes, you did.
I am known as the runaway wife, and I've always made it very clear to those husbands, I don't care what you say or do to me, You do not touch these kids. That's gonna be recipe for a disaster.
But you let it get to the point where you let my sister leave.
I didn't let her leave. I didn't let her leave. I made it very clear to her, go home for a little bit. Let me get some things in order. I am known for leaving really quick. When there's any type of a conflict, I'm out. And they know that. You know, and I think also at the end of the day, I make it very clear to my kids as well. At this point in my life, I'm 45 years old, she's 24, he's 20.
Mm-hmm.
And something somebody told me is that you're going to allow your kids to interfere with every relationship until you're by yourself. They're gonna be happy in their relationships, which they currently are now, and I'm sitting here looking silly.
So do you feel like you're dumb parenting?
I feel like I am tired of parenting an adult who thinks he's grown but still needs me.
But when he was 16, you said that you was done being a parent and that kind of showed and that's how we got here today.
Well, and let me be clear. No, let me be clear. At that point when I did say that, yeah, he was on my last nerves. But I didn't stop parenting. I may have said that, but I didn't stop. So absolutely.
What's the longest amount of time you've ever been alone?
That's hard to say.
2 days?
No.
48 hours?
No.
A week? Stop it.
A month?
No, stop.
A month and a half?
And be honest.
Honestly, I think maybe 8 months.
Mama!
You a liar! You just lied.
I really feel like maybe 8 months. Mama, stop.
Are you trying to move right now?
I am.
With a boyfriend?
Absolutely not. Like, I don't know. I think, I don't know if that's a misconception, but this is—
You told me in June you was gonna live together in June.
Listen, listen, I'm trying to build a home. I want something that I can do for Wendy. I don't know Wendy outside of Nana, outside of mom, outside of a wife. I want some time.
Outside of a man.
Correct. I want this time.
Hold on, because you almost omitted that one. You also don't know Wendy outside of a man.
You're right. And you're right. You're right. I want, at 45, I want this stretch of time by myself. I have poured myself into everyone. My God that I have now, he said to me, who's pouring into you?
This house that she's talking about she wants to build is going to be with these kids.
With them. It's gonna be with them.
And that's okay.
But you said you wanted to— That's not okay. Winnie, let me tell you something. You gotta spend less time with these men and focus more time on these kids. Honestly, honestly, honestly. Because right now, the thing that I do have clarity on, the thing that I do have clarity on is two things. The thing that I do have clarity on is two things. First, that LJ needs, as you're trying to set boundaries with him, he needs some type of counseling that he can be in. I'm gonna tell you that.
I have put in such place to force him to have counseling. He does not follow through.
You have to be strict with that. LJ, you need it. But secondly, the most important thing that I've seen here is that the person that called this show is in the middle and it's unfair. And that has to stop. You cannot keep asking your daughter to co-parent. And that is real. And you now have to learn some boundaries. Because the thing is, is that the more you keep getting involved in this is the more that it's not gonna allow them to figure out how to figure out where to go next. And even though she says she called out for this show to support y'all, let me tell you what really happened. You called out for somebody to finally see you and say, "Enough is enough." Yeah, I guess so, yeah.
And you did. That's what you did.
Yeah.
Enough is enough. You just wanna be a daughter and a sister.
Yeah, quite literally.
Yeah, say it to him.
I want to be a sister and a daughter and that's it.
And I want that, I want that for you.
But I think the thing that is most important is setting boundaries, getting him emotional support.
Absolutely.
And stop putting her in the middle. You're right. That's what I know to be true on this stage. And I appreciate that. And I wish y'all the best of luck. Thank y'all for being here so much. Thank you. Make sure to come back next time, friends, so we can keep talking and growing. I love you all.
