I always knew I had a sister, and I never stopped searching for her. Last November, I went to the liquor store, you know, and it was just like any other day. And that's when I met Marilyn for the first time. I said, "Oh my God, you are my sister. I've been looking for you forever." We look alike and we talk alike. Our dad had tons of kids. Daddy had 2 kids on the outside of his family. I was one, and Marilyn was another one. I lost 2 sisters, so this is a huge blessing for me to have a chance to have another sister. I love Marilyn, and I can't wait to prove that she is my sister.
All right everyone, we'll talk to Lolita shortly, but first let's hear from her potential sister. So everyone please welcome Marilyn to the show so we can hear her side of the story. Hey Marilyn.
Hi, how are you?
I'm good. You look beautiful in this green.
Thank you.
You're welcome. So I wanna hear what you have to say about this tape piece.
I, like she said, I did meet her in April and my name was mentioned. I went to the liquor store to make, get ingredients to make a Long Island Tea for my, a party I was having, and I noticed this one woman at the counter, and I noticed her hair, and I asked her was she a certain person from my neighborhood when I was growing up, and she turned around and she said, "Hi, Mel." And I'm like, everybody called me Mel Cockshell when I was young. And so she said my name, and the lady standing next to her said, "Are you Mel Cockshell?" And I said, "Yeah." She says, "You're my sister." And I'm like, Are you kidding me? I don't know anything about you.
Yeah.
I don't know you.
Yeah.
And then the coincidence of all coincidences, she lives 3 doors down from me in my apartment complex. She's been there for a year before I even met her. And I'm like, it's too close for comfort.
So do you think she's your sister?
I don't know. I saw her as a child. When I was a child, I saw her with my father and he his girlfriend, her mother.
Okay.
And I never heard from her. No one ever said she's my sister. I don't know her.
So why does she think she's your sister then?
She says we're sisters because we share the same father. Now my father was a rolling stone. He has numerous children, numerous children from, you know, from down in the country where they were raised. So I don't know.
So how long ago was it that you met her at the store?
I met her at the store in April.
In April of this year?
Of this year.
So this is all recent?
Yes.
How has the relationship been with her?
She's actually told people in the neighborhood already that I'm her sister. People have been coming to me telling me that she says you're her sister and she tells me, "I love you, sis." Oh. Every time she sees me, it's like, "Hi, sis." And I'm like, "I really don't wanna engage." Well, I'm reading your body language.
I can tell All of that makes you completely uncomfortable?
Completely. Completely. I don't want a new sister and she seems like that she would be kind of suffocating if she really were my sister and I don't want that right now.
So you're uncomfortable and you feel suffocated right now?
Yes.
I heard there's some issues coming to the show today. Tell me about the issues.
The issue was the night before we were supposed to leave, she said, suddenly became ill and she did not inform me. She didn't call me, she didn't tell me anything. So I'm at the airport waiting on her to show up. She's not there. I send a friend to beat on her door to wake her up. She says that she's been informed that she can't fly. So I take her to the hospital and—
So you leave the airport and go take her to the hospital?
Leave the airport, go get her, take her to the hospital to see if she's okay. We get back there, she's fine. There's nothing wrong with her. So she's making me jump through hoops to get her here. And it was just—
So she was having anxiety.
I guess she was having anxiety.
Yeah, and so she was, she's scared about what this may mean for her.
So it gave me, maybe she isn't and she doesn't want that information to come out. Or maybe she was nervous, I don't know. But I had to jump through hoops to get her here.
Interesting. So do you have any, okay, y'all talking about mm-hmm. Okay. Did you have any idea that there may have even been a sister out there that you never met?
Oh yeah. I mean, my father, like I said, he has about 14 or 15 kids.
Got it.
And some of them were outside children. He was married, so he has children by his wife, but he has a lot of children that are not, you know.
Yeah.
And I have a brother that's his son that recognizes me. But I had another family member on my father's side that says that we are not. So Lolita looks like that other family member.
Got it.
When I called her to ask her about it, she says, "Heck no. In fact, I never thought you were my sister." Oh. So if this is true, then that makes that family member a liar and that we are sisters. That makes you our sister.
Got it. What were your interactions like with your father?
I barely, nonexistent.
Nonexistent.
My father's favorite phrase to me was, "Daddy be back." And I never saw him after that. In fact, I did not know when he died. I was not in the obituary. I was not invited to the funeral. I don't know much about the man.
Yeah.
I just know that he was my sire.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I think it's time to meet your potential sister Lolita. Everyone please welcome Lolita to the show. Hey Lolita, how you doing?
I know how you doing.
Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you too.
So my producers are telling me that you were crying backstage. What was going on?
Well, I'm just a little emotional. Um, um, sister really don't know me. And if she were my sister, is my sister, I wouldn't be a bother to her 'cause I really don't know her. I just know that my brother told me that she was my daddy's daughter and I just wanna find out if she's my sister.
How long were you searching for Marilyn?
About 5 years.
5 years? Mm-hmm. 5 years. And you had no idea she was a couple apartment doors down?
No.
Wow. Was your dad in your life?
Yes.
He was. Okay, what was your relationship like with him?
Good.
It was good? You communicated daily, you spoke all the time? Mm-hmm. Okay then. And what age were you when you found out that he was your dad?
16.
16. How did he meet your mom?
My mother was with him ever since he was young. Mm. He left his marriage and he was with my mother. My mother and, well, he was a, He was a rolling stone. He had 21 kids.
How does it make you feel, Marilyn, knowing that if you potentially do share the same father, that he was in her life?
I would be very surprised because he showed no interest in me whatsoever. I know he doted on certain family members, but I think it would be really cruel of him if he actually is her father and the trauma that she's gone through as a young child and he stood by and did nothing to protect her.
Yes.
Got it. So I would feel bad for her for that.
Yeah.
Yes.
But. Got it. So how did it feel to randomly run into Marilyn that day at the store?
I wanted that.
'Cause I had lost all my sisters.
Mm-hmm.
But I understand life is life, and if she ain't my sister, I'm good with that too. But I would love for her to be my sister. Mm.
And if she—
How long ago was that you lost your two sisters?
5 years.
5 years ago. So 5 years ago, as you were losing your sisters, you were also told that you had Marilyn. Got it, around the same time. What would it mean to you to have a big sister?
Well, like I was, I'm gonna say this, I know where she at, I know where she stay, and I just, I know she exists, and it just, if something really came up, you know, I might would call her, but I'm something like a loner. I've been a loner all my life. Stay to myself a lot. So I would really love for her to be my sister.
Marilyn, do you have anything to say to Lolita?
If you're my sister, then I will welcome you. And, but I want the relationship to stay as it's been. You know? Yes. You're in your place, I'm in my place. I'm not really interfering or in your life. I really don't want visitations and confidences and all that. I just want, just the fact of knowing that you're my sister, that's fine, we're blood related. But I have 3 crazy sisters of my own. I really don't need it. Don't want another one.
I will tell you this before we get to these DNA results. You two are both suffering from a similar result of abandonment where you both put up walls. And both have found pride and personality traits in being loners. And I do understand how that has protected the young women in you and how that has also protected the women that you have become, the adult women you have become. But I will say there is opportunities for growth there. But first, before we can talk about that growth, we need to see if you all are sisters.
Yeah.
So I know Marilyn, you reached out to the show.
Right.
But Lolita, you've been on this journey for 5 years. 5 years since your sister's passed, 5 years learning that you had another sister. So I want you to open this DNA truth. So come with me. In this envelope is the DNA truth that you have been waiting 5 years to find out. You want to know if this is your sister. This is not my truth to open, it's yours. So here you go.
Okay. What does it say?
You got what you wanted.
Oh, you're not. Oh my God.
But I still love you.
It's okay. It's okay. Okay. It's not.
No. You were lied to and one of us was lied to about who the father is. So one of us is lying about the daddy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's hard. Oh my goodness. That's gonna make a certain family member very happy.
Okay. So that family member you were talking about, this confirms her suspicions.
That we are not her sisters.
That we are not her sisters.
And one her sister and one not.
Okay. How are you feeling right now? Because I know— How are you feeling? Again, I know that both of you have said like, I've been through stuff, I'm okay with being alone, I get it. But there was a piece of you that was hoping that there could be a deeper connection.
Yes, it was.
I'm gonna say it like this. I'd have been through enough through life to know to accept life for what life is. You hear me? Because if you can't accept life, you can't do life. I'm just like that. And in my heart, I always, she always have a special place in my heart.
Yeah.
You know? And what's going on with you, Marilyn?
No, I'm fine. My eyes water.
Yeah, what's going on, Marilyn?
I'm shocked, really, because one of us is not right because—
One of us don't have a daddy.
She resembles my brother and the man that's supposed to be my father. She resembles them. And I take after my mother. My mother raised me. She's a strong— Beautiful Black woman. So now that brings into question my paternity.
So what I'm hearing is that your paternity.
Me and my sister look like twins, his daughter.
Well, I do believe that answers are deserved for all of you. And I believe that sometimes we are led to a first step so that it can be the beginning of a journey. And I think if you're open to it, I'd wanna invite you and the other siblings back to the show so that any of them that are available, we can test all of you. By testing you all, the closure you all did not get as children, the answers you didn't get as children, you can get now as adults.
I'm truly shocked.
Yeah. So I do invite you back. I invite you back. I invite your siblings back. I invite you back as well because there needs to be some answers. Because especially with this narrative that Papa was a rolling stone.
Yes, he was.
The trail of dust and confusion he's left behind can be solved on this stage.
Wow.
So I'm here for you. I'm glad you two got your answers.
Yes.
And I know it's not the outcome you were hoping for, but again, hopefully we can help you all get real answers as we go down.
Thank you so much.
You're welcome. Thank you. All right, everyone. Make sure to come back next time, friends, so we can keep talking and growing. I love you all.
