Was My Dad A P*mp Who Had Secret Children?! | KARAMO

Zia searches for her biological father, Sean Purcell Ball, and discovers two possible half-sisters, Shanice and Shawna. Her mother claims he was a pimp who abandoned her while pregnant; Sean denies this in a voicemail but confirms paternity. Karamo brings them together for a live DNA test.
Chapters
So what made you reach out to Shawna after all these years?
Curiosity killed the cat. Baby, I needed to know.
Yes, amen.
And I wanted to know, I felt like I deserved to know. I actually reached out in 2019 through Facebook. I had reached out through a mutual family member of ours and she gave me Shawna's information. And well, the initial message, let me backtrack. We're gonna keep you together.
Okay. Hold on, you from Texas? 'Cause I'm from Texas.
I'm from Texas.
I heard it, I heard it. What part?
I live in Houston.
I'm from Houston, okay, that's why. Okay, okay, okay, okay, I knew it.
So I reached out, the cousin gave me Shawna's name and her sister's. So I was like, when I reached out to the cousin, I was like, hey, do you know this man, Sean Purcell Ball? I think he's my dad. They shared the same last name. So being my investigative skills, 'cause I done had a couple, you know, no goods, so I do do my research.
So you know how to investigate, you know how to investigate.
So I started digging. She was like, "Yeah, girl, you got 4 sisters, a bunch of nieces and nephews." I needed to know. So Facebook, thank God for Facebook. So I started looking for the same last name. Anybody who had the last name Ball, baby, I was on it. "Hey, I think I might be your sister." 2019 is when I sent the first message. No response. So I kind of gave up after that. I was just like, you know what, Will, It is what it is.
So what did your mom say about Sean, your potential father?
She said, her story is that they met at a party, he took her virginity, and that what I said, you get knotted up on the first time.
You're right.
So.
It happened.
She got.
I got a kid.
Oh baby.
It took one and done.
One and done.
Okay. I'm sorry.
Okay, so they met at a party. Yeah. They had sex and they kept in contact. Yeah. From my understanding, when she was 6 months pregnant with me, my grandmother came and got her because of the lifestyle that Sean was living.
Got it.
And my mom didn't want no parts of it. Then he liked to put his, I was told that he was a pimp. Oh.
And that's what I was told.
Okay, it looks like I'm getting a ping. We have a voicemail from your mom, Perlene. Let's hear what she had to say about this.
We met, he had a lot of females that was giving him money. So I say he was pimping. We did what we did and I got pregnant. And yes, when I got ready to leave, he was crying at the bus stop because he didn't want me to take the baby in. He didn't want me to leave.
Hmm. So if he knew about you, why didn't he try to reach out?
That's what I wanna know. I wasn't a secret. You know, and if they shared these mutual connections, if he was connected, his sister was connected to my uncles or whatever, they knew I was here. So just damn me, huh? Just damn me.
So if they are your sisters, what kind of relationship do you want?
Whatever we can have. If they're open to it, I'm with it. Oh baby, I ain't have no teeth then. Oh my God.
Wow.
This is you a man right here.
Girl, she was cute, wasn't she?
Okay, she is cute. And these are your, and so these are your potential sisters. So what would you like to ask them?
Did they know about me? Did they know they had a sister somewhere? Why didn't they never reach out?
Yeah, I hear you.
Are they willing to move forward and build a relationship?
Yeah, yeah.
'Cause from, I only know my one sister. Yeah. And I'm the big sister. And from my understanding—
That's on your mother's side.
That's on my mother's side. And if they're my sisters, I'm the big sister too.
Yeah, yeah.
So we got big sister duties.
And so this was again, 2 weeks ago that you had this. So you have not met them in person?
No, we've only been messaging.
Messaging. Okay then. So Zia, are you ready to meet your potential sister Shanice for the first time?
I am.
All right, well everyone, please welcome Shanice to the show.
You're so pretty.
Hi, Shanice, thanks for being here. So my producers were telling me that you were getting upset backstage and didn't want to watch Zia's story. Why?
I didn't wanna get emotional before I walked out here.
Yeah.
Try to prepare myself for myself.
Yeah. How does it make you feel hearing a stranger talk about your dad like this?
How do you feel?
I feel all right.
Yeah.
Like, you know, with my dad, myself, I have my own story with him. So it's not like, oh, I'm be mad that someone's talking about him 'cause I have like, like, you know, my own stuff against him, so.
Yeah. What was your first reaction when you heard that Zia might be your sister?
My reaction was I was a little nervous and scared 'cause I was like, oh, someone else is out there that's a part of us, you know? I'm like, we gotta get on the show. We gotta get, see what's this about.
Okay.
You need to know.
Right now.
We just gotta hurry up and figure this out.
I appreciate you trusting me with this story. So do you think she is your sister?
I can't say yeah or I can't say no, you know, 'cause I don't know her. Like you said, stranger to stranger. But I think it's a possibility. She has like a lot of familiar features of my father, I think, myself.
My producers told me earlier that you suffered a loss. Is that true? Oh, I'm so sorry, love. I'm so sorry, love.
I'm sorry.
I'm so sorry, Mom. Here you go. There you go. There you go.
I'm sorry.
So like, if she is our sister, like, you know, is there somebody else in our corner that we can have?
And I'm gonna be here, baby, 'cause I stand 10 toes behind my— I'm gonna be here.
I don't know if you all are sisters or not, but what I did see was a big sister that just went right into it with nothing.
That's what I do, baby. I'm here.
Yes. I'm so sorry for your loss 'cause I know what that feels like, especially when I hear similar feelings of abandonment that you didn't have anyone.
Yeah.
You know what I mean? Which sometimes I feel like in moments like this when you've had those feelings to be on this stage and to have an opportunity to find more connection more family and love. Well, Zia, I wanna know, are you ready to meet your other potential sister, Shawna, for the first time?
I'm ready.
Well, everyone, please welcome Shawna to the show.
This is who I've been talking to. All right. I love you.
Okay, I love you too.
Hey, it's nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you. Thank you.
Just skip me.
We both strangers to her, so we had to meet up.
That's my man, that's my man.
She looks like your daughter?
She favors my oldest daughter.
Oh wow, oh wow.
I got one question.
Yes.
How would your mom know if he was a pimp if they only knew for a weekend?
Well, I guess that's where the confusion is coming from because that's not the story that I'm getting with my mom. My mom is telling me that they knew each other, they hung out on a regular basis. And she was 6 months pregnant before she even left New Mexico. And like I said, the story that I got that he was begging and pleading, he didn't want her to leave. And this story has been validated by not just my mom, but someone who was there with them that knew Sean or whoever one of the friends was that hung out with Sean. So it's a lot of mixed up stories.
I don't think they hung out on a daily basis. He said that he only met her for one weekend and that was it. Yeah. He said he never went to no bus station or train station with her or anything.
Oh wow. So your dad never mentioned he had other children?
Yes, he mentioned a son of his. We met him a couple times.
Yeah.
And then after a couple times, we never seen him, never hung out, never knew nothing else about it. And then as far as anyone else, no.
Okay. And was your relationship similar to Shanice's relationship to your father?
Yes.
Okay.
It was on and off. And then when it was on, it was like we hung out, we went out. We visit grandpa, we went fishing, skating. Like the times that we had with him was actually like a good time. And then when he was away, he was away. But when we did connect, just as of today, like if we hung out today, we have a ball.
Yeah, got it. So you're still in full contact with him. The relationship is getting better or is he still—
We've been in contact.
Hold on, hold on. I'm getting another ping and we have a voicemail actually from your father, Sean. Um, let's hear what he has to say.
Hi, this is Sean. I'm calling about Zia. I'm her dad. I never denied being her dad. I never denied her. And I was not a pimp and didn't have any hoes. Happy to be able to be in Zia's life after this. And I would be— I can't wait to meet her.
Oh, wow.
I've never heard his voice.
Yeah.
Girl, that was everything for me.
Wow.
I have chills. Yeah.
Is that the first time you ever heard him say, "That is my daughter"?
Yeah, 100% sure.
He said that?
'Cause along the week we've been like, we've still been, they've been still in contact, you know, she's been giving clues and stuff, this person, that person. So we been telling him, you know, so maybe it refreshed his memory and like, you know?
Like he never denied, but he just never told us about it.
He never knew.
Zia, how does that make you feel? I know hearing his voice gave you the chills and stuff, but like he's not denying you. If you are, he's like saying he wants a relationship.
It makes me feel like I'm wanted, you know? I felt like he didn't want me later. Yeah, makes sense.
And you're wanted by us too.
If you are, if you're not, we're still here. 'Cause we all, we have a similar story. Like, you know, we both didn't have our mom or our dad in our lives.
Yeah. Yeah, got it.
I'm ready to do my Maury.
I've been practicing my Maury run off the stage.
Okay.
If you not, okay.
I'm ready.
Okay. She wants a Maury. Listen, Uncle Maury wouldn't run after you. I'm gonna run after you, okay? I'm gonna let you know right now. So Zia, we have your maternal sister.
Zavion.
Zavion in the audience today. Hey Zavion, how you doing?
Hi.
So what would this mean to her if they are her sisters?
First of all, I just, I love you.
I love you too, thank you, I appreciate that.
I just wanted to say that, get that out the way.
That makes me feel so good, I appreciate the love from y'all. I love y'all.
You being out in my house and stuff.
I appreciate it, I love y'all, thank you.
But I love you, yes, but it would mean everything for my sister. This would be closure, this would be healing, 'Cause she's having a hard time with that. And just amongst our family, like you heard, our mom has never been there for me either. I don't know my dad. Never met him. Never seen him. You gonna be back for her. Nothing. So for her, this will be everything and it will be a journey of her healing.
Zia, are you ready? 'Cause I think it's time for you to get the DNA truth.
My heart's about to jump out my chest.
Let's go.
Oh, oh, you guys are going first?
We gonna do it now.
Oh God.
All right, A'Ziah, in this envelope is the truth of who you are. You have waited 37 years to know. You have heard people tell you stories. You've heard conflicting stories. You've wanted connection and you reached out to two women who are potentially your sisters. As your other maternal sister said, this is closure for you, but I believe this is closure for everyone to find new connection and new family. This is your truth to open, not mine.
Oh, shit. Oh, I'm sorry.
No, it's okay.
My bad, I'm sorry. It's okay. Oh, I'm gonna get myself together.
Oh my God.
Oh my God.
I'm here.
Yeah. You come on down here too.
Come say hi. Oh, sister. I meant this when I said before that this moment is not just for you, it's for all of you. There's something about healing and knowing that you have sisters, people who understand your experience, people who want to be there for you, who wanna love you, support you. Unfortunately, we could never control what our parents do. We could never control the choices they make. But what you all have displayed is you have the ability to say, I'm gonna love, I'm gonna heal, I'm gonna be better. And y'all have modeled that beautifully for the rest of the world.
And I'm so thankful. Thank you.
Yeah, I'm so thankful. You know, you get me when I start tearing up, I'll be tearing up. So when you get me, okay.
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Like I said before, my dad is battling with his own problems and hopefully he can like, you know, try to be there even though it's hard for him to be there for us, you know? But if he's not there, we're still here.
Yeah.
And likewise, I'm here.
How do you think he'll feel about this moment?
Me too.
He'll probably be crying right now.
Yeah, he for sure will be crying, yeah.
I can't wait to talk to you guys.
She's emotional. I'm emotional. I'm ready to call him.
So everybody crying now.
Okay, everybody crying.
What's up, Pop?
I'm ready to call him.
Hey, Pop, I got questions.
Listen, I think you should go backstage and call him right now. I plan on it. You said that? I'm waiting another minute. Listen, you all have each other and you have a beautiful bond that can grow from here on out. And in that bond, you're gonna be able to understand understand each other, be there for each other, support each other. This is a beautiful moment. I'm so thankful you're a part of it.
Thank you for giving us the platform to be here. And we'll be back 'cause we got other daddy, we got another daddy.
Listen, any support you need.
Anybody.
Any support you need, we got a whole set of people.
I mean, it starts here, you know? So somebody will see this and somebody's gonna wanna start asking some questions 'cause somebody gonna see something and know something. It starts here. So, and we're blessed to have you here. And I just thank you so much. This is a manifestation, something I manifested. I love you, Karamo. I love you too. Thank you.
Listen, everybody, make sure to come back next time, friends, so we can keep talking and growing. I love you all.
That's my daddy. Yeah, I wanna talk to everybody. Call somebody.
Auntie Pam, you asleep?
Yeah. Wake up, girl, you got another niece. Hey, Amy.
I'm here at the show and I was calling you to let you know that she is our sister.
Hey, Auntie. Hi, sweetheart, how are you? I'm okay, how are you? I'm okay. I can't wait to meet you.
I got one more, one more of the ladies.
We deep in this thing, Auntie, we deep, girl.
Grandbabies too, right?
Yes, ma'am, I have 4 kids.
She looks just like my dad.
I can't wait to meet you. I mean, I can't wait to meet everybody. We got to have a family reunion. Me and the girls will get together and figure out something, believe me.
Y'all send me some pictures, please.
Yeah, he going to take a whole bunch of them.
