We Have the Same Mom, But Who’s My Dad? | KARAMO

In this episode of Karamo’s talk‑show, guest Precasia shares her lifelong uncertainty about who her biological father is. She explains that her mother told her there were two possible fathers – the man who raised her (Shakur’s father) and another man who later contacted her. A court case when Precasia was an infant resulted in Shakur’s father refusing a DNA test, claiming he was the father, yet he was largely absent from her life. Years later, at age 26, Precasia received a text from the other possible father, met him once, and was told she resembled him, but no relationship developed. Precasia describes how this lack of paternal knowledge has contributed to anger issues and a feeling of being an “oddball.” Her sister Shakora, who knows her own father but also experienced an inconsistent parental presence, expresses support and emphasizes the need for closure. Their grandmother Kathleen reveals she has long wanted Precasia to know her father’s identity and arranged the DNA test as a Christmas gift. Throughout the conversation, Karamo offers empathy, validates Precasia’s feelings, and promises assistance with the DNA testing process, framing the test as a step toward healing and family reconciliation.
Chapters
So tell me, how long have you been questioning who your father is?
I've been questioning who my father is majority of my life. My mom was always very open and honest with me that there was a possibility that two men could be my father. Got it. Either my sister Shakora's dad or another man.
Got it, okay. So you've known your entire life basically that there was an option.
Yeah, yeah.
What happened in court when you were a baby?
When I was a baby, my mom took, I guess, Shakur's dad to court to, I guess, for paternity or custody or whatever the situation was. But essentially the judge asked him, did he want a DNA test? And he told the judge, no, I know that that's my daughter.
Got it. This is Shakur's father?
Yes. DNA does not matter and I'm gonna be in her life. And in that moment, he also told the other guy, this is my family, that's my daughter, you need to stay away. And he took that and he respected it and so he stayed away.
Got it. Was Shakurah's father active in your life growing up?
No, he was not active. He was in and out.
So interesting that he would claim you as his child, send another man away, but then decide, "I'm gonna not be here all the time." Yeah, I mean, essentially he pushed someone away that would've been my father.
I mean, I could've had two dads and instead I have none.
So, yeah.
Got it. And are you and Shakora close?
Oh yeah, that's my best friend. Okay, good, good, good, good.
Okay, that's good. At least the sibling relationship wasn't affected by this. Oh yeah, yeah. Tell me about your experience meeting the other guy who could have been your father.
Oh, that was kind of funny. I had got a text and it said, "Hi, Prakasia, this is your dad. I wanted to know if we can meet up sometime today." So I'm like, okay.
A random text?
Yeah, so I'm like, okay.
How old were you?
This was probably like 3 years ago. I was actually 26 when this happened. And when I met him, he said that it looked like he was looking in a mirror. His wife was like, he talks about you all the time. You know, he loves you. He wants you to be a part of the family.
Wow.
So yeah.
And this was 3 years ago?
Yeah, she actually said y'all look just alike. And then my sister was like, I've never seen you look like somebody. Like you look like him.
And this is what Shakora said about this other man?
Yeah.
Yeah. Wow.
Yeah.
So what happened with that relationship?
Nothing. We only seen each other that one time and nothing ever became of it.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
Wow. So why is it important for you to have this DNA test today? I think I know why, but for you?
It's important for me to know this because I'm almost 30 and honestly, I don't know who my dad is. So to grow up in a world where you don't really know where you come from, you don't know, it's not nobody around you that you look like and you just kind of feel like you're the oddball out. Yeah. I can't lie, I feel like I've grown up with like anger issues and I feel like a part of it is just because I don't know who I am. I don't know who my father is. So this hopefully will give me some clarity on who my father is and help me grow and go on to the next stage in life, honestly.
Beautiful, I hear that. Well, I think it's time to meet Porcaisia's sister, Shakora. So everyone, please welcome her to the show.
Hello. Hi, Karamo.
Hello, Shakur. How you doing?
You look super cute.
Thank you.
Nice to meet you.
So how do you feel about what was just said?
I feel like my sister deserves resolve. It's been so many years where we both in the beginning struggled about knowing who we were, you know, knowing where we come from because although I knew who my father was, he still was in and out. So it was kind of like we had to gravitate towards our mother. We had to have just one avenue of learning and growing. Whereas, you know, a two-parent household is you get different experiences, you get different love, you get different challenges in life. So I think that we both Well, her specifically, because she doesn't have those answers, you know, it's important for her to grow and get to know who she is and, you know, what she wants to do with the rest of her life and the people she, you know.
Have you done a DNA test with your father?
I did when I was younger. I wasn't aware of it, but I was told that I do have a DNA test, but it's kind of like a face DNA test. Like, we look exactly alike.
So on top of that.
So I couldn't deny him if I wanted to. Yeah, right, right, right. But, you know.
Okay. Do you think Parkasia looks like your father?
I do not. I think that Parkasia has different facial features. You know, if you look at both of us, we look like, you know, we look similar, but we don't look alike, you know?
And you think that's because your mother, we know y'all look alike from her, not your father. Yes.
Specifically, we come from her.
And why do you want to help your sister find these answers?
Growing up, me and my sister had a kind of, non-knowing about our background and everything. So I think that we both had to find out who we were growing up. So I think that is more important for her because I have two little babies, so I'm forming a life of my own. But for her, it's kind of like she has to start somewhere. If you don't know where you come from, it's kind of hard to move into the next chapter of life without that understanding.
What was it like for y'all? I gotta just go back to this for a second. A little bit, what was it like for you when you met that other man that said he was her father?
It was a revelation to me, honestly. Like, when I was growing up, she was the only person that looked like her, you know? She's the only dark-skinned sibling. So it was kind of like, you know, not necessarily she was an oddball, but she did look different. So when I saw him, I was like, oh my God, like, this could be your twin. Like, it's kind of like with me and my dad. Like, it looks like you came from him, so. It was crazy.
Well, your grandmother Kathleen is in the audience today. Kathleen, how are you doing?
I'm doing well, Karamo.
Nice to meet you. You look beautiful.
Thank you.
All three of y'all, y'all all three look great.
Thank you. Thank you.
You're welcome.
Thank you. So how do you feel about what was just said?
For a long time, I always wanted Precasia to know who her father was. And I really seen the difference that he showed toward it. You know, being a grandmother and looking in and seeing my grandchildren. And I just wanted Precasia to have clarity. Before I leave this earth, I want her to know who she is and who she belongs to. She belongs to me, that will never change. But I want her to know who her dad is.
Got it. I know that. I know your grandma got all of us. That's her, choke her up too. You got me. So you were the one who contacted this show.
Yes.
Which I thank you so much. Why did you want her to get this DNA test? Is it because you want her that closure?
Well, I contacted the show because I look at you every day, and if I don't look at you, I record you for when I come home.
Appreciate that, thank you.
And so one day I just heard them talking, and I said, "Pakasia, I wanna give you a Christmas gift this year for you to find out who your dad is." So I'm gonna call Karamo and find out what's going on.
I appreciate that. I'm glad we could be here for you.
Seriously. And also, I remember when I was in the delivery room when her, when Shakur's dad was there and her mom, and when she came out and I seen the look on his face that this is not my child. And that will never leave me. So I want her to know who she is and whom she is.
Got it. Well, I think it's time to unlock the DNA truth.
Oh my God.
I'm sorry. Procasia, this has been your entire life that you've had these questions, that your mother and father have told you that they're not sure, that there could be another man, and you've wanted answers. You've said that it had given you anger issues, it's given you other stuff. Well, I think this is the first step in you finding out how to heal and where to go from here. So this is your truth to open up mine.
Oh my gosh, girl.
Hey, I love you.
I love you too, sissy.
I'm proud of you.
Thank you.
Honestly, we've come so far just getting to know who we are. So I'm glad that you get to do this for you.
I feel like Either way, I could potentially be taking a loss. Like, if this man, if we do share the same father, then this whole, my whole life he's treated me different or he just didn't do what he was supposed to do as a dad. And then if he's not my father, he pushed away a man that could have potentially been my father. So, okay.
I love you. You always be a part of our family.
Her cage up. Shakur. Shakur's father is not your biological father.
I got it.
Okay.
I'm sorry.
You don't need to apologize. Here you go, love.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you.
Um, wow, it's just a lot because, I mean, to have suspicions or to have a questions, but then to look at it and to see that this is my life.
Yeah, this is your life. This is your life. And the unfortunate part is that as you've said and stated so beautifully and clearly is as an adult, he made a choice to say, I want to step up and And another man that came into the picture said, "You go away," and then decided not to be in your life. I have to ask, do you or your mother still have contact with that man that reached out to you?
Funny enough, I was looking through my contacts the other day and I did have his number and I didn't even realize that I had his number, to be completely honest with you. I guess this is a sign. Yeah, that I can reach out to him and I guess kind of try to see what could happen, try to build a relationship with him.
So if you want any help for us to help reach out, to help you with that DNA test and confirmation, I'm here for you. You deserve that.
Thank you, thank you.
Any help you need. We have the entire Karamo team is here for you. I love being here. Seriously, good, I'm glad. But anything you need, we want to be here for you because you do deserve your answers.
Thank you.
And I'm sorry that this doesn't work out the way that it potentially might have worked out, but you still have a great relationship with your sister.
Yeah.
Always. Of course.
Yeah, yeah. And so I think this is also good for you to put closure to that. Definitely. Because I will say this one thing, and if I can leave you with this, even though hopefully you'll allow us to help you with this, this other gentleman is at least you know that this man who was pushing you away wasn't about you. This is not about you. Sometimes as young people, and especially as young women, a man pushing us away, we start to internalize that. But this had nothing to do with you. This had to do with his own insecurities, his own feelings about an adult relationship before you even came around. But what does have to do with you, somebody else saying, I do want you. And I wanna be there with you.
We love you.
She wants you. Your grandmother wants you. We all love you, okay? So hopefully you'll let us support you. We'll be here to do anything we can for you. And hopefully I'll be talking to you again, okay?
Yeah, definitely.
Thank you, thank you for being here. Thank you for calling the show. And thank you for watching and support. I really appreciate you.
