We Look So Similar, We Must Be Sisters! | KARAMO

Dominika and Olivia connected online believing they might be half-sisters with the same absent father. A DNA test showed they're not biologically related, but they're planning to test the father's sister for a definitive answer. Both women searched for their fathers independently and now hope to maintain their bond regardless of genetics.

So how did you first learn about your possible sister?
Oh my goodness, Karamo, it's so crazy. Like, I literally was in the midst of watching you.
Uh-huh.
And I had on a muumuu, my bonnet, like I'm chilling, you know? And I was literally in the midst of taking my kids to school, and I get this random text message out of nowhere last month saying that I could potentially have a sister.
Wow.
Wow. Hold on, we have that message that you received. Can I see it, everyone? Okay, it says, "Hey Dominika, my name is Olivia. I'm not sure how to say this, but you're my sister from my dad. I understand if this is big news to you. I don't want anything, just for you to be aware that you have little sister out here." Wow.
I'm like, "Your dad? Who's your dad?" Who's your dad?
Yeah, you like, I would've thought that was spam.
Oh, absolutely.
You don't have the phone, you get the messages and say, you know, possible spam.
I'd have been like, "Oh, this possible spam." Right, because you know, usually spam, they go for the heart-wrenching things to grasp your attention. And how long ago was this?
When was this again?
This happened literally a month ago.
And did you have any other idea that you could have siblings out there?
Absolutely not.
Yeah.
For 30 years on both my mom's side, and according to after meeting my father, he told me as well that there was no other possible siblings that I could have.
And so what did your father have to say about all this?
Oh my goodness, so basically, He felt the same way. Immediately after I received the text message, I gave him a phone call. Immediately he just started raving about, you know, baby girl, scammers, and you know, people are out for me. And you know, if you, but I gotta let you know, if you go down this road, then it's on you.
That's what he told me.
On you?
Yes, that's what he told me. And so I was just like, okay, Daddy, 'cause I know—
It felt like he was trying to deter you from going down this road.
Yes, absolutely. And you know, automatically, when someone is trying to deter you from it, you wanna dig.
You wanna dig, yeah, 'cause like, why you trying to keep me away?
Why you trying to, like, why you being weird? Yeah. You know? So I just let it go. But my husband was just determined that he kept pushing me like, no, baby, like, I feel like that could be something more than.
So did you ever respond to Olivia?
So what end up happening is I immediately tried to video call her and she didn't pick up at first. So then I said, hey, do you mind like, "If you're real, could you video call me back?" Oh, that's smart.
That's smart. That's smart. That is very smart.
Seconds later, she video called me back.
Wow.
And I'm looking into this girl's face, and Karamo, when I tell you I've never met anyone that's looked like me. Yeah. My mom will say she does, she's never felt like anyone else has favored me.
Yeah.
But this girl, looking in her face was like looking into a mirror.
Wow. Yes. Wow. So she's beautiful as well?
Yes.
Okay, 'cause you stunning. Okay.
Thank you.
You're welcome. So seeing her for the first time, I know you said it felt like you were looking in a mirror. Did you have emotions around it as well?
Absolutely. Like, I just, I was just spiraling in my mind, like all of the possibilities because I longed for a sister or some sort of sibling for so many years because I've been the only child.
So did you and Olivia hit it off right away?
Absolutely. Like automatically there was a connection, there was a lot of chemistry. We were like talking for hours on the video call. You know, we were discussing like a lot of similarities and the timeline.
And there's only a 4-year difference between you two?
Yes.
Okay then. So like that's a good age where you could actually have similar experiences.
Yes.
And feel like similar cultural references. And so it's like you felt like you talking to a friend.
Yes.
Or to a sister potentially.
Yes, absolutely. It was amazing. I got to meet her daughters. You know, we talked about our children.
Are your children's near in age?
My youngest is.
Your youngest. Okay, that's still beautiful then. Yes. Potentially, okay. Does your father know that you've been talking to Olivia?
Not at all. After he denied and told me that, you know, he felt like if I went down that road that it was on me, I was just like, okay, well it's on me.
Okay, what was the relationship like?
So he was very absent. Okay. According to my mom, he'd been back and forth sometimes, but not very consistent. When I found him, I found him from YouTube.
Oh.
There was a song, one of his favorite songs, and I commented and I said, this was, my mom told me this was my biological father's favorite song. I wish I knew him, I wish I could meet him. Someone commented and said I should try Angel Finder on Facebook. I went on Angel Finder, posted a picture of what he could look like. And immediately they were like detectives. They found him like right away.
How old were you at this point?
I was only, what, it was like 5 years ago, so I was like 25, 26.
Oh wow.
Around the same age Olivia potentially is looking for my dad.
Really? You? Yes. Wow, wow, that's crazy.
Yes, that's very—
Oh my gosh. So what does your mother have to say about all this?
Oh my goodness, my mom has indifferent emotions about all of this.
Of course.
But she did not deny that it could be a possibility.
So do you think Olivia's your sister?
I feel like there's a strong chance that she could be.
And if she is, do you think your father will finally acknowledge her?
That's a maybe. If it is that we have evidence that— if he doesn't have any concrete evidence, he's not even going to indulge at all. Got it.
Got it. Mm-hmm. So have you ever met Olivia?
Not ever. I've video called her, as I said before, but I haven't seen her in person at all.
Well, I think Dominika, it is time for you to finally meet your potential sister.
Oh my goodness.
So everyone, please welcome Olivia to the show. Oh my gosh.
Thank you. Hi. You are bad.
Hello.
You are bad, girl. Yes, ma'am. Both of y'all.
Yes, ma'am.
Hello. Hello. Hello.
Hello.
Oh my gosh. You're the girl.
I'm a fan of both of y'all.
Thank you.
Come on.
Thank you.
Wow, okay. So how does it feel to be potentially meeting your sister?
It feels like so surreal. I mean, it's like I'm looking at like another, it's so weird. It's like weird, but I love it. Yeah.
You're so tall.
Like I thought you was short. Look at you. No, I thought you was taller.
So what made you start the search?
Well, in 2021, I wanted to go on a journey to kind of find my father. I've never known my dad. My mom's only told me his name. And that was something that's always been missing in my life. So I went on that journey. I went on Ancestry. I was able— I am a searcher. Okay? You cannot hide nothing from me. So I will find everything. And so I was able to find him with the help of my mom. I was like, hey, what's his name? She told me his name. I kind of figured out his last name. And I saw a yearbook picture of him, and I sent it to my mom. So he's 16 in this picture. So she's like, "Yeah, that's him." And I was like, "Oh, okay." So then I found his sister on Facebook and just need one person and I was able to message her and she was like, "Yeah, like, you know, you have a sister." And I was like, "What, I have a sister?" Like, "Can you tell me more about her?" And she was like not really going for that. So we kind of played a little bit of Blue's Clues. I was like, "Hey, what's her name? Can you tell me her name?" I went on a different site, I found his possible associates, I found her mom, I found her and I said, "This has to be her 'cause it's in her age range." I was like, "Yeah, that's her." You are a searcher. Hire me.
Okay, literally.
We might need to hire you, okay.
'Cause I can find 'em, trust me. So I found her Facebook page. Luckily for me, she has a very, like, she's like very public, you know what I mean? So I was like, "Oh my God." She posted a picture of him. I said, "Oh my God, that's him." I messaged her that morning. It was just like instant connection.
'Cause you felt the connection right away.
I felt it right away. And I was like, "Wow." There she is, I met her.
Does it bother you that your potential father won't acknowledge you yet?
Of course. I mean, my mom says that he didn't wanna be in my life. He wasn't, more so he wasn't responsible. He was running around doing his own thing. And that's why she didn't want me around in that environment, what he was doing. He didn't wanna step up. She's kind of chased, played the chasing game. Like, hey, we'll do what D'Nate says. Hey, I'll do the whole thing. Hey, if you can just, just hang out with her for just a moment. Like, that's all she wanted. And he didn't wanna do any of that. So, you know, I was raised by a single mother and my mom did it by herself with 2 children. And might I say, she did a good job.
So thank you. Yeah, I can already tell. I can already tell she did a good job. And so you are sure from your research that this is your father?
My mother has only said one man's name. You know, my mom is a very open book. So if it's something that she wants to tell me, she's going to tell me. She's never said any other man's name my entire life.
That's why I was determined to find out because she's just been nothing but adamant and consistent throughout the entire time saying that.
Oh, it looks like we have a ping. And my producer tell me that it's from your mother, Olivia.
Oh, okay.
She said something. Let me hear what she has to say.
I met him while I was out. And he seemed like a nice guy, and we, we kind of kicked it for a little while. And then, you know, things happen as they did, and then I found out I was pregnant. And when I went and told him, he kind of just looked at me like I was crazy, like, okay. But as time goes on, he was not very supportive. When I finally saw him, um, about 10 years ago, I ran into him out at an event in Birmingham, Alabama. That's why you still a deadbeat. I said, you need to, you need to take care of your child. Okay, I'm gonna do what I'm supposed to do. I was like, I'm gonna get your number when I come back. I'll be right back. Because somebody pulled him to talk to him. When I came back, he disappeared. I couldn't find him. So I felt like, okay, here we go, you're ghosting me again. So I just left him alone. I know for a fact this is her father. I know for a fact this is her father. I wasn't dealing with anybody. I wasn't, I wasn't So I know this is her dad. I'll just tell you, I know for a fact.
Now I understand why you confident. Yes.
Yeah, like she never said no one else's name. So I mean, I'm not taking my mom as a liar, especially for 26 years.
Of course not, yeah.
Horrible to lie about, you know, in this nature. So I think she's telling the truth.
Of course. Well, I mean, I just heard it. Like she's telling you that only had one man. She know, you know what I mean? And to have the story and be clear about it, it makes, Makes complete sense of why you like, "No, Dominique, we sisters." Yes. Yeah, it makes sense. So this DNA test is important to you, why?
It's important because I wanna just have closure.
Well, listen, Olivia, are you ready for the truth?
Ooh, yes.
Okay, well come with me. Here we go. Olivia, in this envelope, is your truth of who you are. You have waited 25 years to know. You have said that you have questioned, you have searched, and you have had a clear answer from your mother that this one person is your father.
Yes, this one person.
Absolutely. That name and your desire to find out has led you to finding your potential sister.
Yes.
And possibly your potential father.
Yes.
This is your truth to open, not mine. So I wish you the best of luck.
Thank you.
I just wanna let you know that ain't gonna change nothing.
No, nothing's gonna change.
No matter what's in that card.
This has been a long journey for me. I'm nervous. I'm ready to tell my truth.
Yes.
And I'm ready to put this behind me and hopefully we can maintain sisters. If we're not sisters, I'm fine with us just being friends, but I really hope we're sisters.
Me too.
Me too.
Olivia, Dominika is not your biological sister.
Okay.
Oh Lord.
I'm so sorry, love.
Honestly, this changes a lot because I don't know why my mom would, you know, lie about this. I don't know why. I honestly don't know why she would do this. It's 26 years. She's only said one person's name. So this is very shocking, honestly. Yeah.
Okay, I have to ask this, and this is not to create any more tension or issues, but is there a possibility, because you've never gotten a DNA test from your father, so is there a possibility there, seeing as how your mother, and I know, only reason I'm just tracking everything because we did a sibling test. So as to see if you two are siblings because we were not able to test your father.
Right.
And so because your mother said that they were both doing their thing and you didn't know him for 25 years.
Well, she did marry him. Okay, yeah. But like, it was so, I don't know, it was so strange. She was fighting me so tough even to potentially take a DNA test from the start. And she was mentioning things about like, you know, she kept on trying to reiterate to me that she know he's my father, you know. And then she kind of brought up like a weird story about like me possibly being kidnapped for so many years or some so she saw. And like, I was so confused because I'm like, what does that have to do anything? Like, if you would just, Why is it so hard for you to just take the test? Why are you fighting?
Yeah.
So hard about it. And eventually after a while she chose to go ahead and take the test. But I just, I don't know what that means for me because I was just so sure.
I was sure.
I was too.
I was too.
And the only reason I bring that up is hearing this story now, I didn't know any of this. Because I didn't want you to leave because of the fact that I heard those facts, not knowing if there was things. Do you think that he would take a test now just for you, for you to have your peace of mind, for you to know?
I don't know. I honestly don't know. He tries to stay very low key and—
Is there a family member of his that would potentially take a test?
I think that his sister that I talked to, I think she's like, She's very open. So I think that she would be willing to take a test for you.
Because if we're able to test his sister, then we would have a direct link for both of you to know if that is your father. Because right now doing the sibling test, the reason that this doesn't fully confirm that he's not your father and it doesn't fully confirm that he's not your father, it just means that one of you may be related and the other one may not, or Neither of you may be related to him. And so if you put us in contact with her, we will try our best to help her to understand, like, to know that this is a safe place about, you know, getting closure. And like, we will do our best to protect the story to make sure it's done right so that you all can get your answers. Because 25 years, I'm looking at Mira's stories, 25 years you didn't know. You were searching. And you need closure.
Yes.
And same for you.
I do.
So if there's any support, if you can give us that contact, we will help.
Yeah, she's very open. She's like an open book. So I think that she'll be able to give you that and me as well.
Okay.
The closure that we need, so.
Because honestly, that is the solve of this. Yes. Is once we get her DNA that's direct to her brother, we will know which one of you is related to him.
Okay.
I'm so sorry that we didn't get the answers today. But thank you for allowing me to support you all and hopefully we can get the answers, okay?
Okay.
Yeah. Thank you.
I'm so sorry, but I'm here for you all. We gonna get these answers, okay? We gonna get these answers, all right? We gonna get these answers.
