We're Not Besties, You Broke Girl Code! | KARAMO

In this episode of Karamo, host Karamo mediates a heated confrontation between two longtime friends, Janina and Nia, whose relationship has deteriorated over a series of betrayals and secrets. The conflict began when Nia started dating Janina’s brother, a fact Janina claims she only learned about through a third‑party’s door‑knock and phone call. Janina accuses Nia of revealing private information—such as Janina’s twin‑sister story, an alleged abortion, and other personal details—to her brother, which Janina says broke her heart. Nia counters, accusing Janina of first betraying her trust by sharing those same secrets with the brother. Both women exchange accusations of “messiness,” fake behavior, and blocking each other’s numbers. Karamo introduces a phone investigator, Monique, to verify whether Janina’s phone contains incriminating messages; Janina’s phone is unlocked and found to be truthful, while Nia refuses to unlock her new phone. The investigation uncovers thousands of deleted messages still being recovered. Throughout the dialogue, Karamo emphasizes transparency, accountability, and the possibility of a “reset” to a friendship—though he concludes that best‑friend status is unlikely, suggesting a functional friendship for the sake of their children’s relationship. The episode ends with both parties expressing tentative goodwill and a wish for future peace.

So let's take it back 'cause I can feel your energy. You feeling a little over it right now?
Yeah.
I can tell. So tell me how you and your friend met.
We met through my son actually.
Okay.
He was just, I need a friend pretty much to him.
Yeah.
So him and her son is actually friends, so.
Are they still friends?
Yeah, they still friends.
Okay, then great. But you told my producers you put rules on the friendship with Nia.
Yeah, I pretty much told her if anything Anything I do to her that she feel is bad, come to me. Don't go to nobody else, come to me. No fakeness, no phony, none of that. If we gonna be real, we gonna be real.
Transparency.
Period.
Yes. How was your relationship in the beginning?
The relationship was amazing in the beginning. Like, we would go out, I would buy her things. It was amazing in the beginning. I would share personal things about her. Like, someone really close to me, I have a twin, and I shared that with her, and Yeah.
Yeah. 'Cause she ended up dating your brother.
Yeah.
Okay.
That's actually funny. I didn't even know they were dating. That's what's crazy. Like, I actually went to him and shared something me and her had a conversation about with him. And that's actually how I found out. He literally, I was just like lost. I was like, what?
Well, if this is your best friend, you would assume she would say, hey, I'm dating your brother.
Yeah. Yeah.
Why do you think she kept it a secret?
To be honest with you, maybe they had conversations maybe. So, you know, he probably told her not to be friends with me. I don't know. So that's something, you know.
Okay, yeah. You told my producers that you and Nia gave each other nicknames. What were they?
My nickname for her was my bestie boo. And she called me her Nina.
Got it, got it. Do you think those days are gone?
Yeah, for me. Well, I wouldn't necessarily say yeah because I would love to work on it. Like, I really liked her. Like, she's pretty cool. Like, she reminded me of me in a way. Like, in the beginning, the realness, you know, it was there. So I would love to continue to call her my bestie boo. She was there to me.
Yeah, got it, got it. And let's be real, as we get older, you wanna hold on to some real friendships. Yes, yes. It's not like we in high school or college is around here running around making friends.
You know what I mean?
When you get to adult, it's like, hold on, if you gonna be real, let's rock to the end together.
100%.
You know? So I understand. So in your opinion, when did the friendship start to get messy? Was it when she started dating your brother?
I wouldn't necessarily say when she started dating my brother. I will honestly say when she let someone that person move in with her.
Okay, 'cause you told my producers a knock at the door changed everything.
That changed everything. What happened? So basically I was sitting at home just getting my daily dose of drama and I got a phone call and I got a knock at the door.
You see any drama here?
Yeah, I was watching you.
Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like, come on now, what? So when I got up to go—
This drama with a little healing though.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Drama and healing. Drama and healing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm always for the healing. I'm always for the healing.
Okay, amen, amen.
But I answered the phone call, the phone call was actually Nia. The knock at the door was the girl, so my first initial was, "Why is at my door?" So I'm on the phone with Nia and she's telling me, you know, what's about to happen or whatever. So before I can even say more to her, she hung up the phone. So that kind of, it kind of rubbed me a little wrong way right there. So I opened the door, let the girl in, she came in and the moment she came in, she just got to spilling the beans. The first thing she said to me was, "I don't know why you calling her your bestie boo, she don't even like that name." Then she went on to say she was talking about my apartment. Then she went on to tell me how she would, how Neil would have the girl to go to my son and tell my son like they didn't want him there and to send him home. So I then went to my son and I asked my son, "Was that true?" And he was like, "Yeah." And so that right there, I was like, "I know the girl not lying." Now what really did it for me is when she said, Nia said that I was jealous of my twin sister and Nia. That really, really, really took it for me because that conversation that I had with Nia about my twin, that was very, very sacred for me. That was one of those things.
That was you letting her in.
Yeah.
Why would this woman tell you all of this? Do you think she was being messy when she told you?
I wouldn't necessarily say she was being messy because like she said, she been wanting to tell me.
You told my producers that Nia broke your heart in that moment.
Yeah, she really did.
I just need you. So what did you do after that?
I didn't confront her, like I didn't go on her Facebook, I sent her a text.
Okay.
Like I wanted us to meet up, but then the last text that I sent to her was, "I love you dearly, but it's a wrap for me." Got it.
And then she blocked you?
Yeah, I found out she got a new number.
All right, it's time to hear what your ex-best friend Nia has to say about all this. So everyone please welcome Nia to the show.
I got some shit to say. I love you, but bitch, you know you messy.
Girl.
Don't sit here and try to act like—
I'm the messy one?
You don't know what the fuck you did.
I'm the messy one?
Don't act like that. I'm the messy one? So you didn't start it?
Please just tell me how I'm messy. I would love to know, 'cause that's why I would, I just wanna know the why. I don't wanna know nothing else. I just wanna know why.
Okay, before I answer that.
Yeah.
Why did you go tell your brother what I told you in private?
That's my brother.
But that was something that me and you talked about that I told you that nobody knew besides you.
That's my brother. That's my brother.
So you betrayed me first and then you went over there.
I betrayed you? So that's betray you because I went to go share something with my brother? Did y'all break up?
If we're going to have real transparent conversations, you have to understand that you have to take accountability. She's telling you that the same thing you're mad about, that you're feeling hurt about, whether it's your brother or not, she's saying, "I trusted you with information and you went and told somebody." And so, to begin this, you have to acknowledge that. You can't say, "Well, it's my brother, so I can say whatever," because then she could say, "That's my friend, I can say whatever." I mean, eh, I could take accountability for that.
That's no problem, I could take accountability for that. I can apologize for that too, unlike you. So I apologize for going to, you know, I apologize, I really do. Like I apologize for going to my brother, sharing that with my brother. I really do, I apologize.
You know that, that's a personal thing. You think she's trying to break up your relationship with your brother?
Yes, because she not only told him that, but told him other things as well.
So what's going on between you and the brother right now?
We are still together.
Y'all still together. What else did her brother tell you about what she said?
She told him about my abortion that I had. She also told him about the other dude that I was talking to. You got him.
Shouldn't have been talking to another damn dude.
So why did you block Janina?
I blocked her because she was messy. It was just too much going on. She wanna sit here and act so innocent. Like, you really wanna sit here and act innocent like you don't know what you did, Janina. You crossed me first. And then listen, time out. You didn't even know that I knew the things that I knew. And then you got mad at me because she came and told you those things. Little did you know though, I started I started to say things behind your back and it's wrong and I did and I can admit I am wrong for that. But I started to say those things.
I mean, she's taking accountability.
I started to say those things because you were doing the things that you were doing.
Hold on, hold on, before just 5 seconds ago when she told you you hurt her, you ain't wanna take accountability either.
No, I did want to. No, you didn't.
I made me have to stop you.
I didn't want to. It's my, no, I will take accountability. I don't want to admit my wrongs.
Let's start there. Well, Nina, why do you believe that she is telling your brother these secrets? Just tell me, I just need to be clear.
I honestly don't know. I'm shocked. That's something you would have to ask her, 'cause I don't know why she would do that.
Are your sons still friends?
They are because they go to the same school now. They're not as close as they were because of the situation. And I do feel like it's hindering my son to a degree because that was like his best friend. So they can't be around each other as much But I wish they could be around each other more, but she's so fake.
This is new news to me. It's kind of hindering their relationship. According to my son, they cool.
She's so fake.
You up there trying to make it like they, like it's just really something.
You're so just talking. Never said they had a problem. What I said was they couldn't be around each other as much as they wanted to be.
Girl, please, they can still be around each other. You just fake and phony.
Stop it.
Stop it. You ain't change the number. Why you change the number? What about the texts I sent to you?
You're fake.
I never saw those texts.
Exactly, exactly, exactly.
I wonder why. That's even more bogus.
She's not gonna listen to me.
No, I'm not gonna listen to you.
She was reading nothing you said. She started it first. She started the messy stuff first. She started this stuff all with her brother.
So I know what you're saying. I wanna unlock both phones because you wanna know if she's talking more about you, correct?
Mm-hmm.
Okay, so we're here to unlock both of the phones. Before I unlock these phones, do y'all still wanna be friends?
I'm scared away. Are you shaking in your boots?
Do y'all still wanna be friends?
You got more you wanna say?
Yeah, you're fake.
You still wanna be friends?
I mean, if she could stop the fake stuff, I feel like she just needs to mind her business. What me and her brother have going on has nothing to do with you. To do with her. If she could just stay in her place as the sister and not anything else, then we'll be just fine. Our sons still love each other and I still love you without the fake stuff. Just stop it.
Well, listen, it's time to unlock the phone. Here we go.
Unlock, unlock, unlock, unlock, unlock, unlock, unlock.
Nia, we unlocked your phone. Nia actually refused to unlock her phone. And why did you refuse?
Exactly.
First of all, I have a brand new phone. I have nothing in that phone with me and her.
This girl, I'm telling you, like baby bye, ain't no excuse. They got a new phone, there's nothing in it.
That's the word I got. I literally just took some pictures and videos in my phone last night that was open and you would see as soon as you went into my phone.
They wouldn't have went to my phone.
We not looking at that stuff.
Listen, it doesn't matter. Excuses, girl. It's still in there and if it's somebody going through your phone, you don't know what they're gonna look at.
Whatever.
So this is the thing. Whatever. I respect you, it's your choice if you don't wanna unlock your phone, but it does give us the transparency we need. I respect my privacy. Yeah. All right, Janina, we unlocked your phone. All right, Nina, you wanna know if Janina is telling other folks her business. Janina says she is not. Monique, the phone investigator, searched Janina's texts and found that Janina is telling the truth.
Okay, finally somebody learning not to talk.
Nina, you wanna know if Janina is sharing any messages on her phone with other people. Janina says she is not. My locked-up phone investigator searched Janina's photos and found that Janina is telling the truth.
Finally, finally.
Nina, you wanna know if Janina is direct messaging anyone about her. Janina says she has not. My locked-up phone investigator searched Janina's DMs and found that Janina Is telling the truth.
Oh, okay.
So now, so—
Nina, you wanna know if Janina has been negatively talking about—
She's gonna get it seen if we don't—
Nina, you wanna know if Janina has been talking shit about Janina's brother. Janina says she has not. My locked phone investigator searched Janina's phone and found that Janina is telling the truth. However, I will tell you this. At the time of the investigation, we did find, my investigator discovered over the past 30 days, there was 2,935 deleted messages from her phone that right now we are still recovering and encrypting. So we didn't have enough time to get all of that, but you know, we're still getting into one of those deleted messages.
Girl, ooh.
What I do believe here is that each of you have done each other wrong, and I don't think each of you understand the full hurt that you have inflicted on the other person. I don't think you fully understand what it meant for her to feel like, oh my gosh, I was betrayed, especially when I was trying to engage in a relationship. And I don't think you fully understand what she was feeling when she's saying, be real with me, and you sat on information that, listen, and I understand a lot of people do this. They sit on information because they're like, hold on, let me see. But what it does is it does break the bond because now I'm like, well damn, if something happens in the future, are you gonna sit on it or can you come to me? Because the thing about real relationships is that we have the courage to say, "I need to talk to you," even in the hard moments. And if it's a real friendship, a real best friend, you're gonna say, "I'm gonna have empathy right now and just be an empathetic listener. I'm gonna listen to what you're saying." But neither of you trusted each other to do that. And so what happened is that the moment that you felt betrayed, you said, "Oh, okay, I'm done." Yeah. And then when she felt betrayed, she tried to work on it, but she also said, "I'm done." And I think that the more you could acknowledge the hurt you both felt, That could be the first step to have a reset button.
I like that.
I really do.
I like that. Mm-hmm.
I think there could be a pathway to a friendship. Best friends, I don't think so. Because what a best friendship, you know from the beginning, is that the trust is there. But y'all can be friends so that the relationship with your children can be stronger and then also that you can be involved in your brother's life, you know?
Thank you.
Yeah, I wish y'all the best of luck. I'm telling you, I wish y'all the best of luck.
Thank you.
Y'all ain't gonna be best friends, but friends.
Yeah.
Awesome.
