Yes, I'm here to find out if my cousin is actually my brother.
Oh, okay. So we spoke to your father and your potential brother earlier, and I want everyone at home to hear what they had to say.
I had no idea who my father was growing up. I was told it was a possibility of it being 3 different men, but when I was 15 years old, I heard that the strongest possibility was actually my cousin Malia's father, Corey. When I found out the information about Corey, my head was spinning. And I was just kind of hurt that a lot of people could know the truth about my backstory and I know absolutely nothing.
28 years ago, I cheated on Malia's mom with her cousin. She ended up getting pregnant. She never told me that the baby was mine, but I could see that he ended up looking like me. That baby was Marcus.
I didn't know how to approach Corey about possibly being my father. And so I just never said anything and thought that he would walk up and say something first and actually try to build that connection first. And when that connection didn't get built, I kind of like just closed in a little bit.
I've seen Marcus maybe once or twice his whole life. I never said anything to Marcus about me being his father. I was waiting for him to make the first move. It was a secret that everybody knew, so I didn't want to put it out there.
I don't think I ever said more than a couple words to Corey in my entire life.
I've always felt that Marcus is my son, and I'm excited for these results.
If I find out Corey's not my father, I have absolutely nowhere else to turn. I always wanted to be able to call somebody Dad, and I'm really hoping that the search ends with Corey. Wow.
Okay then. So, from your words, why did you contact the Karamo Show?
'Cause I feel like it wasn't gonna get done waiting on them two.
Okay.
And I'm ready to find out if this is my brother or not.
Amen.
Look at you for stepping up. So how did you first find out that your father maybe had another child?
So it was, I was 8 years old and I had a birthday party and my dad told me like, "Hey, your brother's here." And it's a lot of girls in my family. So I was looking around like, "Well, where he at?" Yeah. And he wouldn't tell me like who the brother was or nothing.
Like he was just like, "He's here." And so you just at the party like, which one?
Right.
Got it.
And I was mad at him for a long time about it.
Yeah. Did your father ever explain what was going on? No. Never?
Just, you had a brother that was here, you got a brother.
Okay then. So how did you finally learn that it was Marcus who could potentially be your brother?
Yeah, so we was at his aunt house who was also my cousin and we just having a conversation. My uncle was there and she was like, you know y'all siblings, right? Yeah.
That's what you thought of?
Like, we just having a casual conversation.
Yeah.
And she just like, "You know y'all siblings, right?" I'm like, I felt relieved in the moment 'cause I'm like, okay, this who, it validated who I thought it was.
Yeah.
But I also was angry because he didn't know.
Oh wow.
Yeah.
Were you and Marcus close?
Yeah, like of course, 'cause we cousins. So when we get together, yeah, when we get together we—
You are so pretty.
Thank you.
Thank you. You're welcome.
We have fun, we talk, so yeah.
Yeah, so it's been a close relationship. Y'all always have a good time. How close are y'all in age?
We only 6 months apart.
6 months apart. Yeah. Wow. Oh wow, okay.
Yeah.
So does everyone in the family knew about this except for the two of you?
Yeah, I think it was basically an open secret. Like everybody knew it was a possibility, but nobody said anything.
Yeah, okay. What does your mother have to say about all this?
She actually doesn't even know I'm here. Yeah, I haven't told her.
So you picking up the family trait to open secrets too? Okay.
I guess so, it run in the family.
Okay, why didn't you tell your mother you was here?
I was just nervous of her reaction, which I don't think she's gonna be mad. It's just I wasn't trying to deal with the stress of figuring out, I wanna know who my brother is.
I understand, I understand. Okay, well it's time to hear from Marcus about all of this. So everyone please welcome Marcus to the stage. To the show. Hey Marcus, how you doing, man?
Doing good, how you doing?
I'm good, thanks for being here. So how do you feel about what was just said?
A little dumbfounded, I'm not gonna lie. Everything is kind of surreal with all of this.
Yeah.
But I'm nothing but happy that she called me that day and was like, we're gonna do this. I didn't even argue with it. I was like, let's go, let's run it.
Yeah, let's do it. Yeah, let's do it. So how did you first hear that you and Malia could have the same father?
Well, I had went to North Carolina to visit my aunt and it was just one night where she was just talking. She hadn't seen me in years for one. So she got the wine bottle out, got to talking. Look, well, you know how it is. She got the wine bottle out, got to talking. It was just all nice and cool until we got down this dark little path with her. Letting out secrets that I didn't even know about, well, for myself. And once I heard it, it was— it's like a flood of memories start flooding back into my head.
Yeah.
And it made sense. I remember we was playing outside, and her grandmother, which is my aunt, she had seen us playing, like, just running around together. She stopped us. She was just like, man, y'all look just alike. You know, I'm a kid, so I'm just gonna run off, keep doing what I'm doing.
Yeah, do what you're doing.
But it's like, as I'm hearing story from my aunt and like a bunch of memories like that just keep flooding back into my brain nonstop. It's like everything start to make sense.
Got it. How did you react to the information? Were you happy that maybe there was a lead or were you sad?
I was happy and confused. Like I was happy there was a lead, but to hear it coming from my, like it's my cousin. So it's like, it's like, are you sure? Like my whole life I looked at her as nothing as being my cousin. And to get that type of information, it was just like getting hit by a train. So it was like I just had to go back and really reflect on everything that's happened up to that point.
Yeah. Did you talk to your mother about this? What did she have to say?
Just like her, I told nobody about this.
Got it, okay.
Nobody. I've known this information.
Yeah.
I've known this information for a while and I have not told a single soul.
Yeah, okay. What did your mother say about who your father was?
She's never even opened her mouth to say anything.
Never?
And that's why I never went back and told her what I just found out.
Okay.
I feel like a lot of people in our family is kind of ashamed of the circumstances around it. And so they try to cover it up. But it's kind of messed up if it's my life, you know?
Yeah. Yeah. You are someone in this world just looking for answers and security. It's your mother's duty to release her shame so that you can have clarity and truth. And so I'm glad that even though she wasn't able to do it, your cousin said, "I'm gonna help you do this." We gonna get it in, by Karamo. Okay, okay. So what have your experiences been with Corey, her father?
I have no experience with him at all.
None, okay. Does it bother you that Corey has never made an effort to know you?
Yeah, it pisses me off.
Yeah.
But like, I'm not necessarily mad at him, but it's just the whole circumstance of everything affects me, so it kind of pisses me off.
Yeah, exactly. 'Cause you're the child in this. You're not a child now. I'm not calling you a child now, but I'm saying in this situation.
No, I mean, even now I'm somebody's child.
Exactly, you are. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly, yes you are. Yeah. And so having all these adults not make the decision, Making decisions that are affecting you is what the issue is. You are a very emotionally intelligent man. Really good. Marcus, I think it's time for you to meet your potential father for the first time since you were 15. So everyone please welcome Corey to the show. How you doing, sir? How you doing? Nice to meet you. So how do you feel about what was just said?
It's emotional.
It's emotional.
Yeah.
Yeah. Is there anything that you wanna say to Marcus while, now that you're here?
Sorry I hadn't been there if I have been, if I am your father, but I do want to be a part of your life. You know, I want to have this closure.
What was your relationship like with Marcus's mother?
Just friends basically.
Yeah.
And how did you find out that Marcus could be your child?
Well, she stopped me one morning and she was like, don't him and Malia got the same nose? Kind of hinting at it, but she never really came out and told me that he might be my son.
Do you feel like Marcus could be your son?
Yes.
You do? You do? Y'all feel like that too?
Yeah. Cool. I remember when she at first told me everything, like she wanted to get on the show, and all this, she had sent me a picture of him 'cause I didn't even know what he looked like. So I got on Canva, I put my picture next to his picture. I was just like, "Golly, man." I showed my girl, she was just like, "That might be it right there." How do you feel about the apology you just gave? I accept it 100%. I understand that we're all human, we all make our own mistakes. I'm not gonna fault nobody for what they did in the past. I just wanna move forward.
He was young. Marcus, in this envelope is the DNA truth. If Corey is your father, it's been 27 years. You have had things that have hurt you, that have made you not trust, but you've, even those moments, still found yourself to be a great man. But with these answers, you'll have clarity of how to move forward next. This is not my truth to open, it's yours. So here you go.
For one, I appreciate the opportunity for this.
Of course.
Thank you more than anything.
Definitely.
We ain't nothing. We ain't going to do nothing. We wouldn't have done anything.
Yeah.
And regardless of anything else though, like, you're still family regardless.
I know that's right.
So we still going to thug it out. We going to handle it like men, you know?
Oh, yeah.
All right. Nervous. I am. Said Marcus Corey is not your biological father. Oh wow. Wow.
You okay?
Yeah, I'm all right, I'm all right.
Okay, still part of the family then.
Still family, of course.
I'm sorry, what's going through your mind right now?
Back at square one.
Yeah.
This ain't a new feeling.
Yeah.
So.
Yeah. Corey, see, this is where it's time for the adults to step in. And this is where I ask you, do you have any information from that time?
No.
You don't know anything? There is nobody that you remember from that time period?
That could be his father? No.
Got it. Anywhere y'all used to hang out? Anywhere y'all used to all go?
No, we just from the same apartment complex, so, you know, everybody knew everybody.
Got it. Well, I think this right here, Marcus, is also a time that I wanna invite your mother into this conversation. And the person who's holding all the answers and all the truth that can help you to get what you need is your mother at this point. And you do deserve it. And so that you can fully heal. So I give that invitation to your mother. I'm proud of the man you are. Even though I just met you today, I'm proud of the man you are. I'm proud of the man you are. I think we all are, right?
