My guest Darryl says he signed his son's birth certificate only to have it torn up in his face. And now he questions everything. So everyone, please welcome Darryl to the show so we can hear his side of the story. Nice to meet you, Darryl.
How you doing, man? My bad, hug me.
Nice to meet you. So tell me, why do you feel like you're being robbed as a father?
Well, because when she first told me that she was pregnant, you know, I tried to beat her from out the gate. There was other individual involved, so she was kind of back and forth with that. And then, you know, here it is 2 years later and now we're on your show.
Got it, okay. So why do you feel like she's been telling different stories?
Which is, it's a good question because her best friend actually DM'd me and basically told the same storyline that I had. You know, she had cheated and ended up pregnant, you know, and So I don't know, that bothers me that you're saying that.
Yeah. So what's wild to me is that you went to the hospital, you signed the birth certificate, and that when after you signed it, trying to be there, she tore it up in your face, she destroyed it?
Well, it wasn't at the hospital.
Yeah.
I didn't even know when she went into labor, first of all.
Okay, yeah. Oh, she didn't tell you? No. Okay.
She told me that, "Hey, we're home, I'm home with the baby." Oh. So. My friend that drove me 40 minutes to her crib, and I'm in there, we're talking, I'm holding the baby, you know, all of these things. And I'm, in my mind, I'm like, you know, the other individual is not present, not around. I'm a father, proud father, love my kids, love kids in general. This baby is gonna have a father figure regardless of paternity. So I signed the birth certificate. And it wasn't an issue, I ended up leaving. She sent me like 3, 4 paragraphs, ripped it up, and I blocked her.
She said, "Funny thing is I signed that birth certificate she threw away. I drove 40 minutes to come and see her and the baby and she played in my face and now she wants me involved. Blank is crazy." Okay, so what was her reasoning behind, 'cause you said like if you signed it and everything seems like y'all walked away and it was fine, what did the text say that made her feel like, "Oh, you know, I'm pissed now." I don't really remember. Yeah.
Because I didn't continue to have that conversation. You just dumped it like that? I deleted that page. Yeah, like I said, I blocked her. So, you know, but if I was to guess, she wanted the other individual to—
Be the father.
Be the father.
Got it. So tell me about your relationship with Shay.
I don't really remember 'cause it was during the pandemic type of ordeal, you know, and a lot has happened, you know, but I mean, we had some good times.
Why you wanna judge her?
Why you wanna judge her? I'm being real with you, I'm being real with you, you know.
I had one of them little pandemic relationships.
You know what I'm saying? But you know, it was just one of those things that kind of happened, kind of trauma bonding type of ordeal. You know, we was messing around and whatnot. But like, don't get me wrong, I cared for her. You know, after so long.
Why y'all hate?
Half y'all don't respect her. You know what I'm saying? Like, come on, man. It's 2026. You know, like, let him get a little thing spent on him. You know, but right. You know what I'm saying? You know, but yeah, so, you know, it was a fling. Long story short, and like, as it kind of started getting a little serious or whatever, so spring break, I got my kids. I don't, if you're not my woman, I don't mix. You see what I'm saying? Time to go home.
Healthy boundary.
No telling what she was doing at that time, but you know, after spring break she had hit me talking about she's pregnant. So yeah, we get to that part of the game.
So that's when you're like, hold on, what was going on? What was happening?
Yeah, yeah, for sure. You know what I'm saying? And so there was another man involved that you know of? For sure.
Okay then.
For sure.
Got it.
For sure, yes sir.
So were you involved in the pregnancy?
I tried to be as much as I could. Like I said, but it's rock and hard place type of situation. It's like I'm not gonna push, right? When I'm being pushed.
Yeah.
You know what I'm saying? So it's like, you know, at the end of the day it makes me out to be like some type of fool at the end of the day.
So since that day that you signed the birth certificate and held the baby, have you seen the baby since then? No. Haven't seen it. And that's been over a year and a half? Yeah. Got it.
And then since then, of course, when she finally reached out, she was sending pictures and whatnot, but no FaceTime, no visits, no.
Do you think the baby looks like you?
I haven't seen enough. Enough, yeah.
What does being a father mean to you? 'Cause it sounds like it's important.
Oh man, that's everything to me. My daughter was born when I was, oh, he's a cute, tender motherfucker. My firstborn is 12, man. So like I was 16 when I had my first one. It changed everything about me. 6 months later I had my first boy. So my first two were back to back, so it was like I had no choice. I take pride in being the favorite parent, like I really love the children.
So what do you want the DNA truth to be today?
That doesn't matter to me, 'cause I made my decision when I did what I did.
When you signed that birth certificate.
And I got the same energy. I don't, you know, whatever the envelope say does not matter. I got the same energy. Now if it's not mine, she gotta allow that. If it is mine, ain't nothing to talk about.
Yeah, exactly.
You see what I'm saying?
Yep, mm-hmm. Ah. Thank you. How do you feel if the baby is yours and she kept him from you all this time?
I mean, that's a pain that's gone and came. You know, at the end of the day, we here now, this is what's going on, and he got a whole family waiting to meet him.
All right, well listen everyone, I think it's time to meet Shanquella, Shay, and hear her side of the story. So everyone, please welcome Shay to the show. How are you?
Thank you for coming.
You got dressed like me. So how do you feel after you hearing his side of what happened?
I'm a crazy bitch.
You feel like you, oh, you think?
Ain't that what that message said that y'all had up earlier?
Uh-huh. So you've never seen a message?
It's the respect. For me. That's a problem. If that's your child or not, it's the respect for me. I ain't never disrespected you like that. Whether your feelings is hurt or whatever, it's the respect for me.
What message you talking about?
The one y'all just sat here and talked about.
That message didn't say crazy bitch. That said crazy shit.
Crazy shit. Whatever it said.
It says shit crazy. But to be fair, when you said You've never disrespected him. I would have to challenge that because having him come to your home and meet the baby and sign the birth certificate and rip it up.
I didn't ask him to come and sign that. I didn't tell him to sign that. We were supposed to discuss that.
Okay.
He took it upon hisself to sign it on his own. No discussion was had before or after that, which is why I didn't turn that in.
At the end of the day.
Because you was not claiming my son, why would I give him your last name?
How was I not claiming him?
You wasn't claiming him.
When was you?
When was you? And we wasn't on FaceTime, you wasn't watching me breastfeed my baby, 'cause you said it wasn't no FaceTimes or nothing.
That was literally the same week of me coming out there.
I talked to you for a while. I just spoke to you since. Duh. I've been speaking to you since. You quit saying stuff. You quit texting me.
You ripped that birth certificate up and that was the end of that.
Okay, well, you should have said something about it.
There was nothing else to be said.
There's a discussion going on.
Listen, take something. I took the liberty A discussion needed to be had.
I don't know what you do with you and your other ones.
What do you mean?
What are you gonna do for me and mine? That is what the discussion needs to be. Or you don't have to be on the birth certificate or nothing.
You hear that? Me and mine.
But this is a question.
Because what? Do you know what I went through? I've been through everything that— You don't got— Not for me like that.
I get it.
But I've been postpartum depressed and everything.
I get it. What are you talking about? I understand that. I know what comes with that.
What can you do for me?
I know what comes with that.
No, you don't.
Clearly.
Clearly you don't. I don't. I got kids. You don't respect me.
Who don't respect you?
You, bruh, you don't.
But hold on, first of all, I'm sorry about your experience with postpartum. That is real. That was her fault. And I understand the— Well, that's not her fault. That is the way her body was made. I did that to myself. I know that part, but— But this is what I'm saying. I understand you wanna support and I understand that you might've, you could've been upset because the first week or so, but if he showed up and then he tries to sign the birth certificate.
He didn't say nothing. He took the paper and just signed it. That was that.
But why rip it up? Because then what's gonna happen? How do you rip it up? How do you throw it away?
I fucked that up in front of him, he just left. But I said a conversation needed to be had.
I texted you or called you.
But wouldn't that document right there have proved to— First of all, if you need support, I'm thinking about— I'm going off of support. That would have been able to say—
I want that document that says 99.999% that you are my child's father.
So because you had doubts, because you had doubts—
He had doubts as well.
What do you mean?
He's the reason why he doubted him at first. I believe he's my son's father, you don't.
I mean, what you expect? There was more than one day.
I understand that. I'm not saying I didn't do what I did. And I'm glad you brought that up. I'm glad you brought that up.
'Cause at the end of the day, like you said, I still showed up, signed the birth certificate, and took whatever responsibility that was gonna come with it. What responsibility?
What responsibility did you take? Is this your first child? Yes, this is my first child. And let me— You're lying, bro. And I'm trying to watch my mouth, but you are lying. I did not rip that up Because I contemplated whether I was taking it or not. I talked to my family about it and everything. Am I wrong about this? I feel a type of way about this. We need to talk about this. You felt like we didn't need to talk? I felt like we didn't talk. It is what it is. I'm gonna make the decision that I feel comfortable for my child that I take care of.
This is where we at now. We're gonna find out.
And I am the reason that we here. What do you mean?
We're gonna find out.
Now you care?
I've always cared.
You said to these people it's 2 years. My baby is 1, sweetheart.
Pregnancy counts too. Pregnancy counts too. That's another 9 months. That's another 9 months that I could've been there with you.
That's not my fault. I didn't keep him from you or none of that.
Do you understand that?
You told me that you wanted to have a baby with me. That we loved each other. I believed when we had this baby.
And then what'd you do?
My feelings was hurt and I stepped out. I don't care, bruh. I don't care.
You wasn't making me happy when I said that to you.
I guess I'm wrong because I told you I wasn't happy and I did not want to keep going through what we was going through.
But then you could've ended the I stopped talking to him.
I didn't say nothing, okay? Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I should've said, "I don't wanna talk to you no more." We didn't break up. I'm sorry that I did not say those 15 words to you.
That's irrelevant.
I really don't either. I don't.
That's a part of the story. What's important is who this baby belongs to.
That is the only thing we here for. Is this the first time you tried to get a paternity test?
No, it is not.
It's not. So you tried to get a paternity test before?
I absolutely did. Me and my son caught the bus to get it done and you didn't go.
Dude, I did.
They told me you did not go. They told me you did not go. That is why we're here. I don't got nothing.
So what do you want the DNA truth to reveal?
Who my son's father is, that's it.
And who do you want it to be? Do you want it to be Daryl?
I don't want it to be neither one of them. I wish it could just be nobody, to be honest.
So you don't want to co-parent?
Absolutely not.
You don't wanna co-parent?
Absolutely not, I tried. I tried. Okay.
When did you try?
Come on now. Come on now. When did I ask you when can we talk about it?
But this is a, let's just take our feelings aside and say this is a first step. If he is the father and this child is going to need to know their father, if he is, you don't see a path of saying, okay, listen, all these things happened in the past. We both made choices. We both had, we're in our feelings, but now it's confirmed. We need to take steps. "So that our child can make sure that they are equally loved and have support from both of us." You wouldn't allow that?
It's gonna take time for me.
That ain't what the court's gonna say, so they ain't having it. I mean, it is what it is. Just know that once this gets documented and once—
I don't care.
I don't care. —once all of this is what it is, the judge and the courts is not gonna agree with, "Oh, that's how you feel, so that's how it's gonna have to go." It's not gonna go that way. Okay. Yeah.
I don't—
I'm saying— If you get visitation or whatever, I'm not saying no to that.
That's what he's asking though. It's called co-parenting still.
If the court says that yes, I'm not about to talk to him like that no more.
Are we going straight to court? We most definitely going straight to court.
Well, listen, I think to get to have the verification for court, Darryl, I think it's time to unlock the DNA truth. So are you ready? Come with me. So Darryl, in this envelope is the DNA truth. Okay. If that baby is your child.
I feel like I should open it.
Are you ready to unlock your best self? Key is my new wellness app made for you. Fitness, nutrition, meditation, sobriety, better relationships, self-love. 6 keys, 1 app. Change starts today. I don't think so. Only reason because since he signed and you ripped it up, I think it's his, he's questioning now. You knew the 2 men you slept with. He, he. So, in this envelope is your DNA truth. In this envelope is your DNA truth. This will tell you if this child is yours. You have had questions. This is your truth to open, not mine, so good luck.
Going to court. That's my baby.
She thought the baby was gonna be, the daddy was gonna be a ghost?
Yeah. What it say right there?
So Darryl, it says that is your child. So congratulations, first of all. I will say this, the one thing that I would've said if she wouldn't have walked on the stage is that it's funny because she called the show. Yep. And so it wasn't you that called the show. Nope. She called the show, but what gets me is I think that there's a lack of, and I don't know if she can hear me backstage or she's gone, but there's a lack of accountability on her end of her actions as well. And this is not to make you seem as if you're perfect because I can hear—
I know I'm not.
I can hear where there's some areas where you were like, you know what, instead of like maybe digging a little deeper, you said I'm done. You were hands off. I could hear that. But I also hear—
I get that too many times though.
You see what I'm saying? I get that. I get that. But I also hear that you took the step. And like I kept trying to express is that by saying things like, "I don't want my child to have a father either way," she's closing herself off to the opportunity by ripping up paperwork. And I don't think she's understanding how her actions also played into you all being here. Well, listen, I think what I'm gonna encourage you to do is, and I think you'll do this, is that at this point—
Jefferson County Courthouse.
Yeah, at this point, this point, use the legal system to have clear boundaries about your visitation, about all your rights, and just do what you were doing here, which, 'cause I saw it a couple times where you could have cussed out and you said, "I'm not," and where you could have engaged, and I saw the self-restraint. So continue that because at the end of the day— [FOREIGN LANGUAGE] Yeah, at the end of the day, it sounds like you're an amazing father to your other children and you're gonna be an amazing father to this child as well. So we actually all wish you the best of luck. I appreciate that. Yeah, we all wish you the best of luck. Seriously. On my show, I unlock phones. And now, I wanna unlock your best self. You need someone to talk to who will listen and give real advice with no judgment. That's what Karamo AI does. Text me, call me, download Key, and let's start talking and growing.
