In this MWC 2011 presentation, Manoj Leelanivas of Juniper and a representative from OpenWave discuss the pivotal Q4‑2010 market shift when smartphone and tablet shipments overtook PC shipments, marking the rise of the smartphone as a dominant computing platform. They highlight the resulting surge in rich‑media video traffic, the accompanying scalability and security challenges for mobile networks, and the need to monetize this traffic. Juniper announces its MobileNext suite, built on the high‑performance MX3D router powered by the Trio chipset, delivering unprecedented bandwidth, service, and subscriber scale. The suite includes solutions for mobile business and consumer services. OpenWave contributes its video‑optimization technology, and together they integrate these capabilities into Juniper’s Junos, Junos Space, and Junos Pulse platforms, delivering the first end‑to‑end 4G media‑optimization solution. The speakers emphasize the global nature of the trend, the opportunity for operators, and the strategic partnership that combines Juniper’s IP‑scale leadership with OpenWave’s video expertise.

Q4 2010 was an inflection point to me because that was the first quarter in which the total shipments of the smartphones and the tablets exceeded the PCs. The first quarter when it ever happened in the history of the world. And that tells you the smartphone is here. It's a revolution. The smartphone computer is here. And it also pushes a lot of new things as part of it. Number one, there's a huge amount of rich media experience driven off video. It also drives a large amount of scale, not just from video, but also the security challenges which is out in the network because of, you know, everything moving towards IP. So it's a great opportunity in terms of, you know, the mobile world. The whole world is coming together. It's not just a local phenomenon, it's a global phenomenon. All of the social networks are coming together, so it's a wonderful place to be.
And as Manoj mentioned, the power of the The trends behind video is really phenomenal. If you look at what's driving it, it's things like smartphone technology and the sort of brilliant form factors that are coming that give people a lot more capability in their hands. Specifically, you have sort of ubiquitous video services driven by social media, social networking, the ability of these devices to not only stream content but actually capture content. So when you can— you combine the devices with the available content out there, we have this explosion of video. Yeah. that's available to the marketplace. People say the data tsunami has hit. I would argue it's still offshore. It's coming, it's building, it's going to be huge.
So like I was saying before, the big challenges are how to manage the traffic in the network, how to monetize the traffic, and also deal with the security challenges in the network. So Juniper is specifically focused on addressing all those challenges. We are announcing our Mobile Next suite of software solutions. Powered on the MX3D router, which is industry's leading edge router platform, which is powered by the Trio chipset, which gives you a fundamental new scale in terms of bandwidth, services, and subscribers. And we're building on top of it. We are also announcing a whole bunch of solutions associated with MobileNext focused on mobile business services, mobile consumer services, and take the game to the next level.
Our— we've announced along with Juniper that we're bringing our service mediation capabilities the video area together with the service orchestration, application orchestration capabilities of Juniper's platform along with its all-IP engine, data engines, to really deliver the first 4G media optimization video solution to the world. That's a very powerful thought. We're really, really excited to be here with our partner Juniper.
So we are bringing the best of both companies together. Juniper's technology leadership in IP Towards scale, we're bringing capabilities together on top of Junos, Junos Space, and Junos Pulse platform. And a real embodiment of this is working with OpenWave and integrating their video optimization technology into the Juniper platforms. And we have a common solution which is actually industry-leading in terms of the capabilities it can deliver to the network.
Our customers, service providers around the world, want service enablers. Video is certainly an important one. We're excited about our ability to bring congestion awareness, content awareness, and contextual awareness to the game. But it's really Juniper's overall suite that we are very excited about and very excited to be part of.
