Forget Every Gut Health Hack. Do This Instead.

Lucas Wilhelm Hedenbäck argues that how you eat matters more than what you eat. Stress and rushed meals trigger fight-or-flight, which shuts down digestion and causes malabsorption and SIBO. His clients saw dramatic improvements in energy and hormones just by eating seated, calmly, without screens, and taking walks before and after meals.

If you only got to focus on one thing to fix your gut issues for good, it should be this one thing that I'm about to break down for you in this video. Whether you're dealing with bloating, you have joint pain, or suffering from low or bad mental clarity because of a leaky gut, or, or whatever it might be— you might be constipated, you might have loose stool, whatever it might be— this one thing is the most leveraged thing you can focus on to actually fix this for good. And no, forget about any probiotic or any other bullshit protocol or supplement. That will not fix your actual root. So, Lucas, what is this one thing? Well, first of all, this is the number one thing that I always prioritize to this date, and it's also the thing that has helped me personally go from, you know, this to this without changing anything in my training or nutrition. I've actually started training less and eating more freely compared to back then, and it's absolutely changed everything, everything for me. So what is this? Well, it's your eating environment. What does that mean? Well, that's once again exactly what I'm gonna break down for you right now. So we have to understand that your gut is— I'm also gonna tell you exactly how to practically implement this into your life later on, but we have to understand this. Your eating environment is the first thing that dictates everything else when it comes to what you're eating. And It's also the first thing that dictates whether you're— and because it's the first thing that dictates whether your stomach acid production is working how it's supposed to and all of your internal processes, let's just call it that, are working how they are supposed to. Because if they are not, well then you're gonna have a harder time breaking down the food that you're actually putting into you, which will then potentially lead to some other issues further down the line with unprocessed food Or food not being processed properly as it progresses down your GI tract. And it can even lead to things such as Candida, SIBO, SIFO, and all these other problems because you have undigested food that is passing through because your body hasn't been able to actually properly break it down. And when I say eating environment, I mean sitting down, eating calmly, and getting away from this rush, rush, rush efficiency mindset. standpoint, because we can— we have to understand that 2 people can eat exactly the same meal, but one eats this meal calm, chill, outside in the sun. He's been grounding for a few minutes before eating. And then we have the other one eating inside an office under fluorescent light between the meetings. And the way it— exactly the same meal on paper, but the way your body handles and processes these meals for these 2 people to a different person is gonna be completely different based on which of those situations you were in. And what does that tell us? Well, that tells us that it's not so much about the food that you're eating, but more so the state of your body that actually matters. Of course, the food matters as well. We can't be eating absolute garbage and expect to feel a million bucks. But I'd actually argue that eating calmly and eating quote unquote worse food, let's take McDonald's as an example, is better and healthier for you than eating in a shit environment but eating the best of the best gut-healthy perfect on-paper food. And that is because when you're eating stressed, when your baseline level of stress is a bit elevated, what is gonna happen is that first of all, your body is in a fight-or-flight mode, in a sympathetic nervous system state, which means that You have your elevated stress hormones and digestion requires blood flow to your GI tract and to your stomach in order to actually work properly. When you're stressed and when your baseline level of stress is a bit elevated, that is not gonna happen, right? That's the last thing that's getting prioritized. We're thinking, or your body is just thinking about survival. So when we then put food down our mouth, well, our stomach acid production is gonna be absolutely messed up. Our internal microbiome and bile and butyrate production, all these internal processes is gonna be messed up and negatively affected, which is once again gonna mean that all this food that is passing through is not being digested properly, it's not being broken down properly. The puzzle pieces and the And the nutrients, the fat-soluble nutrients that goes down and should, are supposed to get broken down by your bile, is not being broken down. And then they pass through your system more as undigested food. And that is what can cause all these other kind of worse problems outside of just not digesting the food. The problems that come down the line of that is far more worse. This is the situation most people are finding themselves in. They don't care at all about their eating environment. They're just eating food and thinking that that's the only thing that matters. When it's, once again, it's important, but it's very, very secondary. And the eating environment is far, far more important than that. And I've seen this, I can't even count how many times I've seen this. Literally clients coming in and one of the first things, obviously this is something that I get all my clients to do practically as well, implement a very good eating environment. Kind of a routine to make sure that we're in a chill state when we're eating to allow all this blood flow to actually go to the GI tract and to allow our body to have a well-functioning stomach acid production going and bile production going by not being super stressed. And as a byproduct, we actually start to break down and absorb and digest the food. So how do we do this then? How do we apply this? Some simple things. First of all, now in the summer it's perfect. I eat all my meals outside, as an example, ideally in the sun, under direct sun, absolutely fantastic. But the most important thing to make this practical for someone, if you're in an office or whatnot as well, is to make sure that you're calm and that you're calming yourself down before eating. So that could look like sitting down and just doing some breathwork. Doing some box breathing, taking a few deep breaths, calming down in general, not rushing to eat the food. And when you're sitting down and eating, don't literally shove the food down your mouth just because you have to be quick and efficient, 5 minutes and then you have to get back to work, right? That is the worst thing you can potentially do. And a lot of people, a lot of entrepreneurs, especially the ones that comes to me, are always telling me like, oh, Lucas, but I have to be efficient and time, Blah blah blah blah blah, and and this and that, or whatever it might be. And I don't have time to sit down and whatever. But we have to understand that this is an investment, right? You're investing a bit of time to get insane leverage because this one thing is actually one of the most leveraged things you can ever do when it comes to your health. Is making sure that the food that you're eating is actually being broken down. That is gonna lead to you having better energy levels, getting Better hormones because your body can actually utilize all the building blocks to support your hormone production. You're gonna have a better microbiome, you're gonna have better recovery, you're gonna have better nervous system health. Like every single process and thing that adds up to your health in your body is gonna be better from you investing some time into being dialed with your eating environment. This is the one thing I never steer away from. If there's one thing I prioritize over Everything, it's eating environment. Doing every single thing that I can in order to be calm, never finding myself in a rushed, stressed state when eating. Humming is also good. Calming your nervous system. Breathwork is the most practical one you can do if you're sitting inside an office. Once again, If you're in front of a screen, I would highly recommend you to have like any sort of blue light blocking glasses before or throughout the whole day if you have to sit in an office in front of a screen all day as well, to make sure that you're not getting overstimulated by the blue light all day long as well. Super, super practical. If you can go out, go for a quick walk in nature to calm yourself down before eating. Also after to help with digestion, but before as well. Fantastic. But the core thing here, obviously I go more exact in depth in this with, and the exact protocols and SOPs for this with all my clients, but the fundamental thing that I need you to understand and that I need you to apply is making sure that you're calm and you're not distracted by anything else when you're sitting down and eating. You shouldn't be listening to a podcast, you shouldn't be looking at a YouTube video. Some of you are probably sitting and eating and watching this. Terrible. This is the last time you do that, okay? That's, you have to promise me that, right? Not rushed between meals. It's the same thing if you're coming out of a workout, right? A lot of people are, protein window, I have to get the food in super, super quickly, otherwise I'm gonna lose the anabolic window, right? If my option is to wait or— Eat more. If I, if I, like, drinking the protein powder is what I'm trying to say. When you're directly after the workout, when you're still kind of stimulated, you're still in this stressed state, it's absolutely terrible. You're not gonna digest anything. Like, that's just gonna cause problems. Absolutely terrible. You're better off after the workout going for a little walk, taking it easy, making sure you're calming your body down. After the stress response, we need a reset, right? And then you're sitting down and eating. This is actually a funny thing. I can probably throw up some photos of Thomas. This is one of my clients, he's 40 years old. The one thing that he took to heart when working with me was after every single workout, he went for a little 10-minute walk before eating. And in his own words, that was one of the most leveraged things he ever did and implemented throughout the program. And he still does that today. And he got absolutely insane results. Obviously, as you saw, as a byproduct, and that was the one thing, obviously there's a lot more to it, but that was one of the core things that he did. Why? It helped him calm down before sitting down and eating, and as a return and byproduct, well, he absorbed the food 10 times better than he was previously doing when he didn't do this, which means that his hormones is better, his recovery got better, his mental clarity got better, energy better, everything better because this works as a domino. It's not just one thing that is gonna happen from this, it's so many other processes and things that is gonna be upregulated and positively affected by you doing this one thing. And this is exactly how your body works as well. There's not isolated parts of your health, everything is connected, right? You don't have 30 separate problems, you have one messed up system. It's what I say in all my videos, right? then it's for a reason because this one thing will affect everything else and then that and then that and then that. It's like a spider web. It's a never-ending thing and everything is connected to each other. So please, once again, the core takeaway I want you to have from this is to dial in your eating environment. It's gonna change your life more than you can ever think. Promise. This is more important than any supplement, any herbal killing, bacterial killing protocol because a functional medicine doctor has diagnosed you with some bacterial overgrowth or Candida, whatever it might be, right? If you don't do this, all of those other problems that I just mentioned will first of all come back because you don't have all these defense mechanisms set up, right? The stomach acid and the bile, that's your body's internal defense mechanism to handle all these things, you know, parasites, other bacteria, whatever, right? This is number one. Please implement this yourself and you will thank me. And it sounds— most people won't because it's such a simple thing. Some people press in on this expecting some magic pill, right? This is not a pill. This is a lifestyle change and something you need to be consistent with. You need to stop sitting in front of the screens. You need to not listen to anything. You need to be present, calm. Think about the history. I'd argue there's a reason why everyone back in the days— we don't see this anywhere in Sweden right now and in modern society— but everyone was doing like a prayer before they were eating. We're sitting down, taking a few seconds to just calm down, be grateful, get ourselves into a very nice state before actually eating the food. food, there's more than a religious reason to that, 100%. But no one is doing that anymore. So for the— please do this, it will literally change your life. I know it's boring and I know that it's probably not what you expected, but trust me, literally trust me. No, sit. Thanks for watching. I'll see you in the next one. Eating environment. Go dial in your eating environment.
