Why Eating Clean & Training Hard STILL Gets You Nowhere

Lucas Wilhelm Hedenbäck argues that 80% of fitness results come from recovery and systemic health like sleep, hormones, and gut health, not from training and diet alone. Without optimizing these hidden systems, you hit fatigue, brain fog, and stagnant progress despite grinding in the gym.

Someone asked me the other day, Lucas, why are you complicating fitness with sleep, gut health, hormones, and all these other things? Can't you just work out and eat clean? Yes, you can. But what I've learned throughout my health journey is that that's not where real change lies. You can train hard, hit the gym 5 or 6 times a week, eat chicken, rice, broccoli, and still feel flat. You might even look okay, but how do you actually feel? And here's what I see in my clients all the time. They've been prioritizing business, putting in the hours, building momentum, but their biology is lagging behind. You still feel tired throughout the day, you have brain fog, libido is hanging out, your drive is inconsistent, and the results aren't coming your way. So yes, you're training, you're eating clean, but you're missing the rest of the system. So here's a framing that I use myself and with all my clients as well. 20% of your results come from the training and the nutrition. Sounds low? That's because most people assume it's probably 80 to 90%. But the truth is, the heavy lift happens elsewhere. The other 80%, that's your recovery, your hormones, your gut health, your nervous system, your sleep, your light and lifestyle inputs. Because your body is a system, not separate parts. You can't isolate the gym and expect everything else to catch up on its own. So what does the other 80% really cover? Well, let's break it down. Sleep quality, not just hours, but how deep, how regenerative. This affects hormones, recovery, and cognition. Hormone balance, testosterone, DHT, insulin sensitivity— these get ignored when you just count macros. Gut health, inflammation, nutrient absorption, immune function— they all come from what you ignore under the surface. Nervous system regulation. You're either in fight or flight or rest and repair. Most high performers are stuck in the former. Your lifestyle and environmental inputs—light exposure, grounding, movement outside the gym, stress management—these shift your baseline. I'm going to be very straight and very upfront with you: if your only goal is to get huge or step on stage, I might not be the guy you should be listening to. Because what I focus on and what I help people do is build a body for everyday dominance. Look good in clothes, look good on the beach, perform in the boardroom, feel good when you wake up, have energy that lasts. Lasts all day. Be sharp, motivated, confident, and biologically optimized. Yes, you'll build muscle, but what I'm really helping you build is vitality because the physique is a byproduct. The goal is performance, clarity, longevity, and feeling unstoppable. Being truly healthy because once again, I don't know how many times I'm gonna have to say this: a good physique will always come. As a byproduct of you truly being healthy from the inside. So if you feel like you're stuck in this loop of putting in all the work, but you're not seeing the results, here are some quick takeaways you can implement today. You have to audit your sleep. Are you in bed early enough? Are you getting morning light? Blocking blue light at night, exposing your body to the right signals. You got to check your hormone support. Are you resting enough? Eating nutrient-dense food, managing your stress levels. You have to shift your training mindset. It's not just reps, sets, and calories. It's about purpose per rep. Consistency per lifestyle, not just volume per week. Quality over quantity. You have to expand outside the gym. Walk in daylight, ground your feet, get outside. Your nervous system needs reset, not just stimulus. You have to eat for biological performance. It's not just clean, it's nutrient-dense, seasonal, diverse. It supports your gut, your mitochondria, your metabolism, and your endocrine system. So if you're ready to stop just training and start transforming, then follow this system. Your body will not only look better, it will feel better. Your energy will scale, your confidence will rise, your performance will expand. Follow me, drop a comment below if you have any questions, and also let me know what's your biggest priority right now. Is it fixing your sleep? Is it fixing your hormones? Is it fixing your gut? Or is it just getting away from the bullshit chicken and rice and broccoli nonsense and training 6 times a week? Let's build something real. Let's start focusing on true health and true vitality and let a good physique come as a byproduct of that. Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one.
