Why Stress Is Ruining Your Physique

Lucas Wilhelm Hedenbäck explains how chronic stress raises cortisol and shifts your body into survival mode, causing fat storage, muscle breakdown, and water retention even with clean eating and training. He outlines four fixes: better sleep, less caffeine and screens, smarter training, and parasympathetic moments like walking and breathing.

The reason you feel bloated, tired, and inflamed have nothing to do with your diet or your training. Let me explain. You can be eating clean, you can be training consistently, and you can be doing everything right on paper, and yet your body still looks puffy, soft, and stuck. And in many cases, the real problem isn't your diet, it's chronic stress. And once you understand what stress does to your body, everything suddenly starts to make sense. This is exactly the situation I used to find myself in roughly 3 years ago when I was working my corporate job at one of the biggest banks here in Sweden. I was trying to keep up with the training, with work, and it just became too much. I was doing everything right on paper. I was listening to all these bodybuilders and these fitness influencers, but I was looking super fluffy, super bloated, and I felt absolutely shit. Then I understood that I'm doing everything right on paper, yet nothing is happening. I must be doing something wrong. And then I completely shifted my focus to, I don't even care how I look, I just want to feel good, and focused on becoming healthy from the inside. And as a byproduct of that, everything changed. My physique— I literally got into the best shape of my life without even trying. Before that, I'd been trying so hard, effort, effort, effort without any results. The thing here is that most people believe that physique transformation is simple: train hard, eat well, and be consistent. And that's this exact loop I was finding myself in. Eventually you'll get the results. But there's something most people completely overlook, and that's your nervous system controls everything. If your body constantly thinks it's under threat, it shifts into something called fight or flight. And when that happens, your body changes priorities. Instead of focusing on things as building muscle, burning fat, and optimizing hormones, recovering from training, your body starts focusing on survival. And when your body is in survival mode, your physique will almost always The main hormone responsible for this is cortisol. Cortisol is your body's primary stress hormone, and it's not bad. Short bursts of cortisol are actually healthy. They help you wake up in the morning, they help you perform during workouts, they help you handle challenges. But the problem today is that most people are living with chronically elevated cortisol. Work stress, too much caffeine, poor sleep, and constant stimulation. All of these things keep cortisol elevated for a long period of time. And when cortisol stays high, your body starts working against the physique you're trying to build. So here's what actually happens. First, your body becomes very efficient at storing fat. Especially around the stomach. Second, your body starts breaking down muscle tissue instead of building it. Third, digestion slows down. And this is why people often feel bloated, inflamed, or uncomfortable even when their diet is super duper clean. Because when your body is stressed, digestion becomes a lower priority. Your body literally redirects energy away from it. So the food you're eating might be good, but your body isn't processing it the way it should. This is also one of the biggest reasons fat loss suddenly stops working. You might have experienced this yourself. You lower calories, you increase training, you You start pushing harder, but instead of leaning out, you start looking more tired, more inflamed, and more stuck. Why? Because your body interprets that combination of low calories, intense workouts, high stress, and poor sleep as a threat to survival. So it slows down everything. Fat loss slows, recovery slows, energy drops, and suddenly it feels like your body is fighting you. But the real problem isn't your discipline, it's your stress load. This is also where the bloated or puffy looks comes from. Chronic stress increases inflammation, water retention, and digestive dysfunction, which can make your physique look softer. You might notice that your face is looking Your stomach feeling bloated or your body holding on to water. And many people try to fix this by doing more cardio or eating even less. But that often adds even more stress to the equation and to the system. So what's the solution then? Well, it's not eliminating stress completely. That's impossible. But you need to regulate it. First, fix your sleep. Sleep is one of the biggest regulators of cortisol. Better sleep alone can drastically improve recovery, hormones, and fat loss. Second, reduce constant stimulation. Too much caffeine, constant screens, and nonstop work keep your nervous system in high alert. Your body needs It needs moments where it can actually shift into recovery mode. Third, train smarter. 3 structured workouts per week with proper recovery will often produce better results than training 6 days per week while exhausted. And fourth, create a parasympathetic moment. Walking outside, breathing exercises, slowing down when eating— these signals tell your nervous system you're safe, and that's when your body finally prioritizes repair, recovery, and growth. At the end of the day, you can train like a savage, you can eat perfectly clean, you can take all the supplements in the world, but if your nervous system thinks you're under threat, your body will never prioritize growth. Fix this. Stress and everything else becomes easier. If this video made you realize that stress might actually be the thing holding you back, then you need to watch one of my other videos.
