Beth Sherman Harnessing Humanity in Leadership The Key to Success

Leadership is about, it's, it's, you have to be human in leadership. And there has to be a tiny bit of vulnerability, at least. A good speaker friend of mine is a former British Army commando. I mean, just tough guy deployed in war zones all over the world, very high up. He would get a local custom a little bit wrong so that he could be corrected or do something a little bit wrong or drink the local booze and kind of have the extra, well, that is Just a tiny bit of vulnerability so that he could get a laugh or a smile. And I asked him, what is it exactly you were saying between the lines in those situations? And he said, I was saying that inside this uniform is a person. And that to me feels like the definition of leadership. I hold authority, but inside this uniform, inside this authority, inside this responsibility is a person. Dealing with other people.
