Engagement and performance aren't the same thing. Engagement is the motivational energy someone brings to work; performance is engagement multiplied by their actual skills. A passionate person without the right abilities still can't deliver results.

Why is it that we have so many leaders misdiagnosing engagement problem as performance problem?
Let me respond to that in a slightly different way, which is when you talk about engagement and performance, I think I agree with you that when someone is engaged in what the company or the team does, if I fundamentally believe that we are making great running shoes and that is a good thing for the world, I may spend extra time designing the logo on the running shoe or designing the squishiness of the sole or whatever that thing may be, right? Because I'm engaged in that. what the company does. Right. And the performance hopefully is engagement times my skillset, because if I suck, I can be engaged, I'm not really moving the shoe forward, right? So hopefully you have that match there where the engagement is the fundamental energy that drives the car forward, but the engine of the car is what you're hiring. You're hiring someone to say, yes, I love running shoes. I believe in this. I want to make the next generation of this social app, of this running shoe, of this restaurant concept, or whatever that thing is.
