Marc Haine talks about why professionalism doesn't have to mean hiding who you are. He pushes back on the industrial-age idea that treats workers like interchangeable parts, arguing that bringing your actual self to work makes you better at what you do.
And it's not okay. Like, for whatever reason, the professional space is supposed to be like operation— operating room sterile of humanity, of messiness, of opinions and feelings. Like, for some reason, we've adopted this thinking that in order to be a professional, I have to be less than who I am every day.
Or more than who you are every day. Because to your point, I think this is all born from the industrial age of I get hired to put buttons on a fabric and that's all I do. My role is just to button it, move it on, button it, move it on, button it.
