Marc Haine and a co-speaker argue that workplaces force people to suppress their humanity and emotions. The expectation traces back to the industrial age, when jobs were reduced to repetitive tasks like buttoning fabric, treating workers as machines. They call for workplaces that embrace the full, messy humanity of employees instead.

And it's not okay. Like, for whatever reason, the professional space is supposed to be like operation— operating room sterile of humanity, of messiness, of opinions and feelings. Like, for some reason, we've adopted this thinking that in order to be a professional, I have to be less than who I am every day.
Or more than who you are every day. Because to your point, I think this is all born from the industrial age of I get hired to put buttons on a fabric and that's all I do. My role is just to button it, move it on, button it, move it on, button it.
