Marc Haine argues that training managers is as critical as training staff. Managers promoted without leadership training create ineffective teams, while untrained employees who stay cost you more than those who leave. Both need ongoing coaching on delegation, communication, and performance expectations.

There is that old adage, you know, wow Marc! What happens if I train my people and they leave? And then the flip side to that is, oh, but what happens if you don't train your people and they stay? Managers need training on how to lead, how to delegate, and how to follow up. You know, we've talked at length and a lot of episodes are focused around this idea that some of our best performers, some of the best people in our businesses get recognized and they get promoted into leadership roles. But then, we don't give them the tools to be effective. We don't teach them how to become coaches. We don't teach them how to delegate effectively. We don't give them the skills to be able to talk to people and communicate in a way that's transparent and authentic and objective-based. Managers need to be trained. Staff need training. They need information and a constant review as to what are the expectations. What are the outcomes that we expect pertains to their performance of their jobs.
