A leader shares how stepping out of your own worldview to ask "What does the world need from me?" changes how you influence others. Marc Haine adds that curiosity about people's actual needs, paired with reading the emotional temperature of a room, transforms how you lead.

talked about this beforehand, Marc, but as a leader, the thing I learned to do more than anything was— of course, I didn't always get it right— but was to put my focus on the other person. Hmm. And actually, that helps you get outside of your own head as well because often, we live in a world created by ourselves and we're going around trying to get everyone to work to our world rather than saying, well, what does the world need from me? And the other thing Kevin could go into the room, notice everybody is, in the state that they're in and not maybe not get that it's got to do with Kevin, but can say something like to himself, how can I turn this around? What do I need to do to shift the mood here? And that gets a different perspective. And I think it's all about looking at things differently because without looking, you're not going to see.
And to your point, it's about being curious as well, which I thought was really interesting.
