Marc Haine explains why employees actually quit. It's rarely about pay or schedules. Poor management, bad communication, and mistrust are the real drivers, but you have to ask departing workers directly and listen hard to find out.

Whatever their reasons for quitting, contact them and say, "I candidly want to know how to make this organization a better place to work." So just do not make assumptions because if you think everybody's quitting for better pay and better schedules, which are the two I hear all the time, they just want to make a buck more an hour. That could be, but even if that's what they told you, they come and tell me, "No, I really left because." My manager sucks. And I really left because they had terrible communication. There were no staff meetings. They didn't ever let us know what they were doing and why. We were in the dark. I don't trust them. It's usually much more than that.
And it's deeper and it takes time to mine that information out.
