About 50–60 weddings per year
October 4th (noted as two months)
So we're here with Brittany. So I would love to first learn about your journey into bridal, bridal hair, bridal makeup, in the wedding industry, what services you offer and where you're from. Like, take me back to the beginning, how you got into the love of hair, the love of makeup. Tell us all that.
Yeah. So I started in 2009 right out of cosmetology. I went to cosmetology school right out of high school, and I live in Boston, by the way, And I didn't know what I want to do. I was looking at colleges, and my best friend went to cosmetology, was going to go to cosmetology school, actually. And I was like, you know what? I'm going to follow her. And when I do that too. Because college wasn't really speaking to me, and I didn't really know what I wanted. My parents are admittedly a little nervous about this, like, switching paths, but they were supportive. So I went to cosmetology school. I did work in a hair salon for like two years as an assistant at High End Salon on Newbury street in Boston, which is like the street you want to be on in Boston. And I realized I really do not like doing hair. That is not my. My thing. It is not for me. And people started asking me to do their makeup. And so I actually started working at Sephora around that same time. I worked there for two years. I got into. They call it color when you work on the floor as a makeup artist. I got there in three months. My manager was like, you are probably the fastest person to move into color. Because I was so driven by it. I was like, I don't want to be behind the cash register. I want to be out there. I want to be doing makeup on people. And I had no idea what I was doing. I picked it all up while I working there. I didn't know. I had no idea how to put fake lashes on. I didn't know what concealer was. But I learned while I was there it was a really good place to learn how to do makeup because you could experiment. And it wasn't under my name. It was under Sephora's name. So I could kind of play and learn, and it was great. And at that time, I was posting a lot on Instagram and social media. It was around the time that influencers were getting really big, like Jaclyn Hill, James Charles. They were all really blowing up. So I was able to to get capture an audience on Instagram. I mean, I didn't blow up or anything like that. But I was able to capture an audience. It was a little bit easier back then to be able to do that. And people just started asking me to do their weddings. And all of a sudden I had a business that fell into my lap. I did not go into it expecting to have a business. It just kind of happened. So I kind of had to work backwards. It was like I was working and doing weddings and I had to be like, oh, wait, I need a business name. Oh, wait, I need to pay taxes. Oh, I need to do all of these things. So I re. I officially started my business in 2017, but I've been doing it for a little bit longer than that. Yeah.
Oh, wow. Honestly, that is so smart that you went to Sephora first. Yeah, like, so smart because you get to work on, like, such a range of people. You get to know, like, people's faces, like how to apply lashes. You learn it all in experience is just, like, constant probably.
Yeah. And I was in the city, so it was everybody that would fly into Logan and stay in this. They were all right there. So I was meeting people from all over the world. I was working on different skin tones, skin types, different ethnicities, and I got to see so many different brands just working at Sephora. So it was. It was a great job. I think it's a little bit different working there now, but when I worked there, it was amazing.
Yeah. Okay, so walk me through the Sephora to bridal business journey. Like, you started your business while at Sephora?
Yes, I was. I was doing weddings while I was working at Sephora. I left Sephora and I actually did get a full time office job and just like a corporate job. I was going in every day. I would do that Monday through Friday, and then I would work weddings Saturday and Sunday. So I was working seven days a week. And then in 2017 is when I officially, like, registered as a business owner and I was still working at my corporate job. And then a few years ago, I went down part time at that job. So I was working Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and then I was working weddings Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I was juggling both. I never have days off because I got really busy out of. No, not out of nowhere. It was like when I first started doing this, I was taking probably like 20 weddings a year, if that. And then during COVID like after 2020, it was just a huge bump. And all of a sudden I'm getting like 50 to 60 weddings a year. Yeah. And so I was working seven days a week, essentially. So I just recently, about a month ago, after joining your program, I will shout that out. It was after joining your program that I decided to officially do this full time. So I have a. I have left the office job, and now I'm. I'm focusing solely on bridal makeup.
And I love that for you. I can resonate so hard with that of, like, leaving the corporate world, going all in, and you're so fresh into it. So I would love to know, like, what was the turning point for you where you were like, okay, I'm gonna do this full time, and did you have any kind of a plan, or were you just kind of like, I'm going in the. I'm just gonna do it?
Well, I feel like it was like I had this inner conflict where I. I was so, like, I just want to take on the world and do it all, and, like, I just want to leave and, like, go full force into this and just hope for the best. But then there was, like, the adult part of me that was like, but this is so scary. Like, what if I. What if I fail? What if I fail? So I was actually doing a lot of this sounds. This might not be for everybody, and it might not sound. I don't know. But I was doing a lot of, like, going on walks and doing a lot of manifesting and journaling. I did do a lot of that. Like, and I think what's good about manifesting and, like, taking that time for yourself is even if you don't believe in, like, the magic of it, it's giving you the time to sit there and, like, really write down your goals and. And think about your goals and how you're going after them. And I realized, like, this was a goal that I've had for so long, and the only way I was really going to go after it is to just do it and hope for the best. And I didn't want to wake up another, like, 10 years and still be doing the same thing. So I just took the leap. And so far, it's been good. It's been a month, and it's been really good so far.
We're celebrating that full force almost going.
Into two months, actually.
Oh, no.
Yeah. Yeah. October 4th will be two months. Yeah. So we're like. We're. I guess we're like a month and a half. Yeah.
And before you know it, it's going to be a year, and you're going to be like, oh, my God, where did the time go? And you're gonna be like, why didn't I do that sooner?
I hope so.
But I have to speak on the point of manifestation, because when I was leaving mine, I was heavy on that because it was kind of like, it allows you to have that time with yourself, to not only, like, process everything, but like, to really think your decision through of, like, what it could be, you know, and allowing you to open your mind to that. So, like, I really resonate with that too.
Yeah. Yeah, it worked for me.
Okay, so tell me about how your business was. You started in 2017 and then you found the academy this year and you decided to, two months ago, leave, you know, and go full force with your wedding makeup business. So what was your business looking like before you joined the academy? And what kind of prompted you to be like, okay, I think I want to join this? Like, what was the main driver for you?
Well, I thought with my business, I feel like I was doing a lot of things well, but I. After, like. So I'll tell you exactly, actually why it was kind of funny how you popped up on my social media when you did, because I don't think I told you this last time we talked, but I was planning my own wedding and I actually had a call with my dj and we decided to go with him because he was so passionate about his business and it was so clear that he really took it seriously. And his, like, presentation, every. Every little detail was just an amazing experience. And after meeting with him and he had mentioned in that call that he does mentoring, he has a mentor that he works under. And after that call, I had this moment of reflection where I was like, wow. I thought I was doing a lot of really good things in my business, but actually there's so much more that I could be doing to make it better for myself and for my clients. And so after that, I kept thinking to myself, I'd really like to find some type of mentor to help me just, like, make my business better. And then one of your Instagram posts popped up and I had never. I don't think I had ever really seen your post before. It was just kind of like. And I wasn't Googling men. Like, I wasn't looking for it. I was just thinking about it. And then one of your posts popped up and I was like, oh, this looks great. So I did your bridal socials one first, and then after I did that, you were doing a reels challenge for like a 30 day reels challenge. And in the middle of that, you had sent out an email about the. Your other program, the booked out Is that what it's called?
The Academy? Bridal Boss Academy.
Bridal Boss Academy. So I. You sent out the email about that and I was like, oh, like, I have to do this. And it has been like, I still, like, I'm still going through the course, I'm still learning so much, but you just showed me how to amp up my business even more. Like, I already thought I was doing so many things well, and it turns out, like, I could have been doing things so much better. So it's been amazing. I tell everybody I know that they should go through your course.
Oh, thank you. But wait, that is so wild, actually, because you didn't tell me that, but also because we were just talking about manifestation. It's kind of like you put the signal out there and then I find you.
No, literally, it was wild timing and I'm so glad about it.
Do you remember what the post was? Now I'm like, curious.
I don't. If I went back and looked, I could send it to you. I'm sure I'd find and be like, oh, dang.
Yeah, that's so funny. Okay, so you get into the academy and you are kind of like on the journey of wanting to refine your business and make processes better. So what did you have going on in your business before? And then when you got in the academy, did you. Was it new things or was it just kind of like fine tuning, like your ideal bride packages? CRM. Did you have any of that before?
I did, and I think you just refined it. So I didn't have packages. I was doing ala carte. I'm now doing packages. And I love it. So far my clients have loved it too. So that has been amazing. And it makes my whole flow and booking process so much easier because I.
