A 2025 YouTube monologue by Marissa Brennan advising bridal hairstylists on hiring assistants. The speaker emphasizes setting a booking minimum (example cited: $400) for assistants to cover costs, protect the stylist’s brand and time, and offset the risk of coordinating freelancers who must commit exclusively to a wedding date.
Our minimum is 400. So what if your assistant fee is now 400? I mean, that would be really nice. That would be really nice. I know in our minds, we're like, oh, I don't know, I don't want to add that additional fee on long term. So you are the one sourcing out this freelancer. You're the one who's communicating with them. You're the one who's putting the risk for you and your business, your personal brand, your reputation online, bringing this person with you also on their side, you have to think they are saying no to all other weddings for this specific day. Same with you. So that's why I really recommend doing the booking minimum for your assistance. But it also offsets the cost of you bringing them on, so you're still earning profit. It's not worth it. So that's the whole point. You want to make sure that it's worth your time because you're going to be coordinating, going back and forth and doing all that with the assistant versus, like, your bride doing that, right?
