Organic vs. Regular CBD: Why COA Lab Tests Prove Both Are Clean

Kyoto Botanicals explains why third-party lab tests (COAs) matter more than organic labels for CBD safety. Both organic and non-organic products can be clean if tested for residual solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, and THC levels. Organic certification adds peace of mind but costs more.

So I did a short on this topic a couple weeks ago and it ended up being super popular, so I thought it might be time to do something a little longer. Um, been on Reddit a bunch, answer a bunch of questions from a lot of people, so just wanted to do kind of a deeper dive into regular hemp extract versus organic hemp extract and what that means downstream for an organic product versus a non-organic CBD product. So starting with the basics, when you're looking for a CBD company, you're gonna always first and foremost want one, A, that uses whole plant, is a big deal for me. THC-free is big for me, so we do all of our products broad spectrum. Coming down the pike with some government regulations here in November, maybe December, that's gonna be even more important. So first off is, is the hemp extract type and how that's processed. But then the big thing you want to always look for is a company that has third-party lab testing. So what that means in a quick nutshell is you take the finished product after it's made, you send it off to an independent third-party lab, ISO accredited, very high quality lab, exactly what a lab looks like in your head. Lots of stainless steel, lots of high-tech equipment. So they run it through a battery of different tests, so residual solvents, pesticides, organic compounds, so, you know, Salmonella, that sort of thing, fungal residue, so any fungus that might have gotten in there when the, when the bulk hemp was drying. And then the big thing Heavy metals as well, that's another huge one because hemp is a bioremediation crop, so it will suck up everything in the environment. But the big one is obviously the cannabinoid profile. So CBD is the main one, CBN, CBG, all the minor cannabinoids, and then THC. So if it's a hemp product and you're looking for full spectrum, you're looking for that to be less than 0.3% for it to be legally classified as hemp. If you're looking for a THC free broad-spectrum product, you're looking for an ND there on all the THC isolates—THCV, THCA, Delta-8, Delta-9, everything should be an ND, which means no detect or less than LOQ, which is below the limit of quantification. So basically it means their super sensitive lab equipment could not detect any THC in the product. It may still be in there in super tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny trace amounts, but the lab machine could not detect it. So you're not going to get any psychoactive impact from it. So that's kind of the, the number one thing to look for from a CBD company is they must have third-party lab-tested products, which is unique to the hemp space, and they must be pretty easily accessible. So we put all of ours right on the individual product page. So when you go to the product, go to checkout at kyotabotanicals.com, It's right there for you to look at. We also have a lab testing and trust page with all of our lab results for the last couple of batches available there. So why I started there is that kind of provides a baseline for really high-quality hemp extract. So what you're getting there is a finished hemp extract that's free from pesticides, free from herbicides, free from heavy metals, free from residual solvents. So basically everything that an organic product products would end up free from, a high-quality hemp product with those lab tests is going to be free from as well, as far as the hemp extract goes. So really, the CBD category, if you're buying from a reputable brand, has that baseline level of quality that's pretty well organic practice farming anyway. So really, it comes down to a personal choice. So we do our tinctures, so our peppermint Broad-spectrum tincture is organic, is USDA-certified organic, so it is just organic hemp extract, organic extra virgin olive oil, and organic peppermint oil. We do this just because it's just an extra step to make people feel good. Sure, it probably costs a little more, but you get kind of that double whammy of feel-good factors. So you get the third-party lab tested, plus you get the organic. So that's kind of the difference between organic and not organic certified CBD. So again, it's purely a personal preference point in hemp extract because reputable companies have to source hemp and test it. It has to be clean, it has to come out pure in the testing. You're basically getting organically grown hemp extract anyway, it's just not certified. You know, there are things in the certification from the drying to the extraction to the bottling to the handling, all that stuff. So there is, there is some benefit in terms of the supply chain of what you're getting. So there's obviously those benefits. So if that's super important to you, then by all means go ahead and get organic hemp. We've got it at kyotobotanicals.com with our mint seed CBD tincture. A lot of other good reputable companies have it, so go check that out. But if you just want to make sure that your hemp is clean and as high a quality as possible, again, just look for those, those COAs, those certificates of analysis. Make sure they're third-party, make sure they match the batch that you have. So that's kind of the quick difference. Again, CBD is just really unique in that most products aren't tested to the level that CBD products are from reputable brands. So as long as you got those lab tests and it's a company that has good reviews, real reviews, and has published lab results, you're gonna be probably buying some pretty high-quality stuff. But again, if organic is important to you in your, in your life, in your cat medicine cabinet, in your kitchen, you want things to be organic just for that extra peace of mind and that extra extra quality throughout the supply chain and the production process, then go ahead and buy organic. So yeah, that's it. That's the quick, the quick touch on organic CBD oil versus non-organic CBD oil. Check us out at kyotobotanicals.com. Drop a comment if you have anything else.
