Misty May-Treanor says she considered doing a backflip after winning Olympic gold, inspired by NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, but her height and long levers make gymnastics risky on sand. She admires gymnasts for their strength and aerial control.
Look at the one athlete that maybe you say, I would love to do that, or you're the most awed by, another Olympian or another sport. You know, I throw the tough ones without giving you warning.
Okay, I'll do it. If I could do gymnastics, I'm too tall, but in college I had to take a college gymnastics class. I couldn't even hoist myself on the bar because I have too long of levers. Like, I couldn't do, I couldn't do that. But I was thinking, if I won the gold medal, this was on the way to the final match, I was like, okay, if I win the gold medal, what's something I can do like crazy. Like, um, Carl Edwards does a backflip every time he wins. And I was like, oh, maybe I'll try the backflip. So I was trying to think about, okay, in plyometrics I jump on a box about this high, so I can do that if I just, I guess, whip my legs around. Maybe I can land it. I didn't think about the sand, and then when we won, I forgot to do it. So, and I really am glad I didn't because I would have been hurt a lot sooner. So I would say gymnastics because they're amazing, the body strength that these young men and women have and how they're able to flip in the air and stay healthy is amazing.
Well, I can never do beach volleyball because I'm not nearly tall. I'm like as tall as her leg. For me, of course, I was always— I always want to try diving, but because you're still flipping, right? Um, I just want a softer landing. Yeah, I love the flip. The only hard thing would be like, we're used to landing on our feet, and in diving you land on your head. So it's kind of a don't in gymnastics, so that'd be kind of hard to change, but I'd love to try.
Fantastic. All right, I'm not going to hog all the time, but let's start the
