Zan Monroe - How the Mind Works

Zan Monroe breaks down the mind into three parts: conscious awareness (a narrow focus like a laptop desktop), the subconscious warehouse (storing every experience and memory), and the creative subconscious (an inner voice you can program). He argues the subconscious handles about 90% of mental processing and that harnessing it can reshape your reality.

How the Mind Works. You see, your thoughts affect the universe. We asked you in the last session, and I'm now in session number 3, page number what? 24. How the Mind Works. You see, your thoughts affect the universe. The beating wings of a butterfly can change the world as we know it, and we've always heard people talk about your thoughts affect the universe. And if you study Zen, they will tell you that, you know, a butterfly's beating wings in South Africa can change the reality in Chicago. Well, I think it's pretty true. So before you start thinking, let's talk about it. How the mind works. First of all, you have 3 pieces. The first piece of your mind is your conscious awareness. It is that faculty with which you are listening to me now. Well, let me rephrase that. With which most of you are listening to me now. Me now. Your conscious awareness is a pinpoint. And the problem is, it's like a rifle. It is just one point. Conscious awareness is very narrow, very tight. While you're sitting here listening to me, your mind has left this room numerous times today. Some of you went home and checked on the washing machine. Some of you went, "Did I turn the iron off?" Some of you were thinking about your la—" And then you come right back. And you think you're not getting caught. Well, it appears on your face, it sort of goes this way, and then you come back. And as an instructor in front of you, the eyes are the window to the soul, I can see when you leave. Some of you have left and never returned today. Some of you were never even here. But your consciousness is the doorway. It is simply like the door to your mind. And some of you, it's locked. The conscious mind is how things enter your brain. Sight, taste, touch, feel, all your senses. What are they? Taste, touch, feel, smell. All of those allow information in. Any of you familiar with the Montessori school? They have a different teaching method. One of the things is to take shoes off the kids. Do you know why? Because a child up to the age of 8 or 9 learns as much through the soles of their feet as they do from touching with their hands. We are all learning at all times. Now the problem is, once you take it in, your conscious cannot hold it. It's sort of like the desktop of your laptop. It can't hold but just so much. It has to be dumped into the hard drive. It has to be dumped into that great repository known as your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is the greatest warehouse ever. Everything you've ever seen, heard, taste, touch, felt, thought, believed, whether it's true or not, is currently stored in your subconscious. There is a giant warehouse back here, the doorway to which is your conscious mind, but it stores everything. Wow, y'all got a lot of junk in your mind. And guess what? You do. You have every television show you've ever watched stored in your mind. Things run out of your subconscious mind. There are people in your subconscious mind that shouldn't actually ought to be there. The little one of you that was 6 years old at your birthday when Bruce Williams brought the frog in his pocket and you— we can put you under hypnosis and take you back to that day. You can recount it completely. Every belief you've ever had, every horror movie you've ever seen, everything your uncle ever told you at Thanksgiving, every date you ever went on, every belief you ever held, It's all stored in your subconscious, and you cannot remove it. Now, you can rearrange the warehouse, but it's all there. The third piece of your mind is the creative subconscious mind. Your creative subconscious mind is that little voice that talks to you that keeps you sane. It's that voice in the back of your head when I get on my high horse and start ranting and raving, on you, it goes, "Nah, he'll hush in a minute because I'm doing it right." You see, your creative subconscious keeps you sane. Otherwise, you would have to make changes. But your creative subconscious is even more. It is a part that, if you learn to program it, can change your world. Your conscious mind is about about 10%. Subconscious is 90% of what you have to work with. If you've read Malcolm Gladwell's Blink, it's a book about all of the things you can do if you trust your inner feeling. Because the subconscious mind has no conscious awareness. It works in feelings. Mode. So you get a gut feeling. Any of you ever been out to list a property and the instant you met somebody you just hated their guts? You should have walked out then, shouldn't you? Well, that was your subconscious gathering all the data instantly, making a decision. You should have walked away then. The conscious mind— let's play a little bit with your mind. Kenny, Kenny, Kenny, where'd you grow up, man? Aiken. Aiken, South Carolina?
